Quote : | "Colleen Lachowicz, AKA Santiaga, is a gamer in the massively multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft (WoW), which takes place in the make-believe land Azeroth. Today, Colleen/Santiaga is an orc assassination rogue playing at level 85–the highest level one can attain. She and the members of her “Wreck List Guild”—Colleen/Santiaga’s WoW online alliance—post comments to each other on liberal online forums including the Daily Kos, where they discuss politics, military policies, and WoW battle tactics." |
From what I understand, the Maine GOP's argument is that she's unfit to lead because of this "bizarre double life." While I get why this could be viewed negatively, it seems misleading and makes me wonder more about the candidates of the future that not just will have had Facebook/Twitter/Instagram, but also Xbox, PS3, etc. "He has 20 Platinum trophies, meaning he has fully completed every possible objective in video games that could take up to 40 hours to finish; he is unfit to lead."

This would not change my decision to vote for someone or not, unless we're talking about the GOP's candidate. I think it's childish to even bring up that the other candidate plays WOW. Maybe that's only because I've never played it and have no interest. Does stuff go on that makes someone unfit to lead? 10/5/2012 8:55:33 AM |

she's got my vote. when I clicked on that link it took me awhile to figure out it was supposed to be bad for her.

I don't think it would affect my vote at all (even though she is from the party I tend to side with), but I think they're trying to communicate several things:
1) It's weird to play an "orc rogue" in a "make-believe world"
2) It's time consuming. They mention the average WOW player is 28 and plays 20 hours a week. That's a part-time job!
3) ^In relation, the average gamer is 28! This is not something mature people do.
4) She's talking about "teabaggers" and killing things online 10/5/2012 9:01:21 AM |

The more I think about it, the more I think this would backfire for the other guy. Seems like I could relate to this woman more than the average politician. 20 hours per week, is about 3 hours per day (assuming they played all seven days) and I bet your average person spends that much time watching TV. At least when you're playing games you're interacting with people and thinking about your actions. 10/5/2012 9:11:32 AM |

^^I figured that's why the argument might be more effective as an (I'm presuming) 20-something male, you're not really the target of this particular campaign. However, for a mother that has to constantly tell Johnny to turn off his Xbox and do his work? The horror! 10/5/2012 9:33:52 AM |

attacking people over online comments is probably going to become more and more common. corporations already fire people/reject potential new hires over facebook posts. tbh i think maybe sometimes it can even be justified if you can tell for certain what they posted wasnt a joke.
but lmao at attacking someone over playing a video game. like if she was doing crazy hours in game then maybe you'd have a point, but 20hrs is pretty casual by wow standards.
^ thats a good point. i figured it was mostly a "she plays demon video games! vote for the good ol christian!" type thing, but the overprotective mother crowd is probably a good demo to target. 10/5/2012 10:06:05 AM |

Two things:
1) Nobody's business but the citizens' of Maine.
2) Who gives a shit if she plays WOW. Would it be more acceptable to Republicans if she played Call of Duty?

I don't think so. I don't want to embarrass the guy by bringing up his name again. But it was the fellow who made up a fake family and talked about them as if they were real. He got caught and exposed in the news. If I recall correctly, he wasn't pretending that they were his family, but they were a family that was somehow involved with him, and he had names for them and stuff.

Fuck the Maine GOP. I haven't played MMOs in years, but I still find the phrase "bizarre double life" deeply offending.
This isn't just an attack on the candidate's personal life. There's a clear implication against gaming and internet sub-cultures. Even if it's entirely an exaggeration, the subtle intent of the statement is mostly likely to paint her as a deviant simply for being a gamer. 10/6/2012 3:01:41 PM |

The point of this, I suspect, is to influence older voters. You know, people that tend to make up the GOP and consistently get out and vote.
We know that it's not that weird, but these old folks don't have a clue and they're likely to believe what they hear.10/6/2012 5:39:56 PM |

Some elaboration and some response from the woman in question and her community. Apparently, there was also a mailer and a press release to accompany the website. 10/6/2012 7:17:29 PM |
