So my nephew got into a wreck a couple weeks ago. He hydroplaned into a tree...single car accident, no injuries or property damage, other than the obvious. Walked home because he didn't have his phone. Car was towed the next day to a body shop via AAA.
There was no accident report. The question is what kind of documentation will a standard insurance company require to file a claim? 10/8/2012 1:01:24 AM |

They will probably require a accident report if one is required by state law. The law in NC defines a reportable crash as:
Quote : | "A crash involving a motor vehicle that results in one or more of the following:
a. Death or injury of a human being.
b. Total property damage of one thousand dollars ($1,000) or more, or property damage of any amount to a vehicle seized pursuant to G.S. 20-28.3." |
http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/EnactedLegislation/Statutes/HTML/BySection/Chapter_20/GS_20-4.01.html
Quote : | "(a) Notice of Accident. – The driver of a vehicle involved in a reportable accident must immediately, by the quickest means of communication, notify the appropriate law enforcement agency of the accident. If the accident occurred in a city or town, the appropriate agency is the police department of the city or town. If the accident occurred outside a city or town, the appropriate agency is the State Highway Patrol or the sheriff's office or other qualified rural police of the county where the accident occurred." |

Any other documentation should be requested/obtained by the claims adjuster during the filing process and investigation.10/8/2012 8:26:48 AM |

New question
I was in a wreck like a year ago, my rates went up since it was my fault.
Recently someone hit and ran my bumper, and I have a $50 deductible so I'm thinking about claiming it. Is it 100% true that comprehensive claims can't make your rates go up? I did have a ~$5k comprehensive claim about two years ago that didn't affect my rates, so I'm wondering if these things add up so something. 7/21/2014 10:46:16 PM |

it's not uncalled for for a comprehensive deductible to be $50 - pretty sure though your bumper in this case will be covered under collision 7/21/2014 11:28:10 PM |

^^ I pay a little more for it...it's not too bad.
^ Shit so that means my rates might go up if I claim? 7/21/2014 11:36:58 PM |

It will not affect your rates, it is a not at fault incident. It is also definitely collision. 7/22/2014 9:42:42 AM |

Seems like an agent would have the answer to your question, though.7/24/2014 7:45:09 AM |

Any collision claim may impact your rate (depending on your state)
Generally, comprehensive claims don't impact your rate, but can (again, depending on your state); however, just having claims (of any type) can lead to higher rates in the future on renewed or new policies.7/24/2014 8:55:55 AM |

In North Carolina, a hit and run collision claim does not affect your rates. It is a Not at Fault accident. 7/24/2014 11:12:47 AM |
