It will kinda be the opposite of a Dem/Rep debate: Most of the 3rd party candidates overlap on many social issues (and likely foreign policy to a degree), but I think will show a greater contrast on domestic issues
maybe? 10/17/2012 4:19:34 PM |

You must not have heard of the Constitution, Prohibition, or American Independent parties.
They greatly differ with the Green, Justice, and Libertarian parties, along with the many parties with "socialist" or "socialism" in their names, on social issues IIRC. 10/17/2012 4:24:54 PM |

4th poll, like all the rest, calling it an Obama victory: goo.gl/uC1Gf
So not only is it a clear win, but if I'm reading the numbers right from CBS who I think has polled all the debates, the is the biggest debate victory margin of all.

JesusHChrist, if you're asking about the debate, he's there; as for Supplanter, methinks they invited the minor-party candidates using the two more rational rules of the Committee on Presidential Debates: They must be Constitutionally eligible to be President (not a prob. with the current field), and they must have access to enough states to constitute a majority of the electoral votes (Johnson and Stein have more than enough in straight ballot access, Goode easily has enough when you also count write-in status, and I think Anderson also has enough by this standard).
Quote : | "Three right wing parties vs. one left wing one? Where's Stewart Alexander?" | Stewart Alexander (Socialist Party USA) doesn't have nearly enough ballot and write-in access to be able to get a majority of electoral votes (he has my home state of Ohio and a couple smaller states), and it's really more like two left-wing parties (Stein of the Green and Anderson of the Justice), one "radical centrist" party (Johnson of the Libertarian), and one right-wing party (Goode of the Constitution).10/23/2012 12:12:26 AM |

Nobody in that room has a snowball's chance in Hell of winning a majority of electoral votes, regardless of whether or not it's a mathematical possibility in the most technical sense.
Quote : | "and it's really more like two left-wing parties , one "radical centrist" party, and one right-wing party." |
I'll admit Anderson qualifies as lefter-than-Obama, but American Libertarians are more right wing than the Republicans by a longshot. Having sane positions on social issues does not make someone centrist, especially when your economic policy is extremist laissez-faire Capitalism that would make Romney blush.

It's depressing to see these people who actually believe reform and "working within the system" is a real possibility - as if we could just choose to drop the two party system.
Should be an interesting debate, if for no other reason than candidates knowing they can't win. The Dem. vs Repub. debates are an inhuman exercise in emotional manipulation and carefully constructed talking points. This one might have some worthwhile discussion. 10/23/2012 8:49:41 PM |

HOOPS MALONE, I know very well what libertarianism is (in fact I considered myself a libertarian throughout college), and the use of "radical" and "dude" together is neither in common use anymore nor what I had intended by the use of the phrase "radical centrist": It was a matter of parallelism.
Quote : | "Having sane positions on social issues does not make someone centrist" | I had a hard time thinking of a term that would go well with "left-wing" and "right-wing" in the sense of taking positions from both of the major parties, and also some positions that are more extreme than either major party, while in a balanced summarization ending up between the "left" and the "right"; I decided to use the old term "radical centrist" as a distinction from the more consistent centrists who once survived on the fringes of the GOP and still survive as a minority of the Democratic Party.
Also, as another note, after re-reading what Rocky Anderson stands for, I still think he's a left-wing candidate, although not as consistently as Stein; advocacy of a balanced-budget amendment and the replacement of income taxes by consumption taxes do not per se prevent a candidate from being left-wing on balance.
Quote : | "I guarantee that if you're looking for gained ground in the "3rd party movement" within election results, you're not going to find it." | SMDP FTL Also there's the problem that the minor parties (except probably Libertarian and possibly Green) have trouble fielding candidates for "downballot" races because of the outsized visibility of the Presidential election; notably, a fellow SMDP-based country (the UK) doesn't have a single headline candidate during its elections, so enough attention gets paid to the individual district races for minor-party power to concentrate enough to get a couple viable candidates through per party, like a couple years ago a Green MP was elected.
[Edited on October 25, 2012 at 3:57 AM. Reason : Roseanne Barr is only on the ballot in like 3 states, of course she was excluded.10/25/2012 3:51:57 AM |

I can't stand shit like "Peace & Freedom Party" or "Justice Party" or "Libertarian" or "Independent". Because who doesn't like Peace, Freedom, Justice, Liberty, and Independence? It's silly and insults the intelligence of voters.
Every party should just get a color assigned to it, like the Green party, but at random. But nobody gets Black. No way, no way. Tried it once, doesn't work. You got four parties all fighting over who's gonna be the Black Party, but they don't know each other, so nobody wants to back down. 10/25/2012 12:36:12 PM |
