itouch is not an apple product, it's ipod touch. the difference is the size.

but yeah i don't think it's a needed product, but i guess they're trying to compete with kindle...?

i was interested in buying one, but gave up after the event last month ended up being iphone5 only. i figured if there was an ipad mini that it would be 6+ months away. so i ended up getting a nexus 7 instead. coming from a regular ipad, i was eager to get a 7" tablet to take for my daily commute, but it still feels a bit too big. i think i'd be happier with a 5-6" tablet for this purpose.

i always thought the giant phones were kinda goofy just like everybody else, but i might just end up doing that. i was planning on getting the nokia 920 which has a 4.5" screen, but i've been so disappointed with the size of the nexus 7 that i am seriously considering just getting rid of the true tablet and go with the humongo-phone category instead.

$329 is not a particularly appealing price either.

How could they not hit $299?

yea no thanks. I was surprised they strait up tried to trash the nexus 7. To me their argument was weak. Just a big ipod touch (same processor and everything).

I'll be stickin to my Nexus 7

Minus your atrocious spelling, I agree with you, this seemed like a very un-Apple thing to do. Everybody already knows the iPad is a better product, than all the rest of the tablets, pointing out specifics like that just seemed like rubbing it in.

And if this thread isn't going to get the bucket, can we at least get a mod to edit the title to be iPad instead of Ipad?

This product really begs the question... wtf was apple thinking? Seriously... Just no way it will compete with Kindle or other 7" sized tablets with that kind of last years features and such a huge price point. Even my brother, who is a big apple fanboy, questioned such a product.

I guess since Apple and Samsung didn't renew their LCD contract, guess they had to settle with a crappy LCD for this product. lol

of course it will, its Apple. Media will talk about how awesome it and people will line up to buy it. Just look at the iPhone, there really isnt any good reason why the iPhone should have been successful other than it is an iPhone. Same here.

I don't know that the screen will be "crappy" without seeing it, that said, the price seems strange, I thought they wanted to compete with the Kindle, doubt they will hit that target with almost a 2x price difference, it will probably just cannibalize the existing tablet market, which they dominate already.

^^if you say that the mini won't be successful because of unimpressive dated hardware, how does that not also apply to the iPhone 5? Boring iOS upgrade, slightly longer screen but the resolution is beat by other phones, camera beat by other phones, styling dated, no NFC, etc...

But it did really well because its Apple and people want to be in the Apple user environment and will buy anything that is.

no trolling

I'm not going to get into a debate with someone who obviously has his mind made up and has demonstrated a complete lack of intelligence in the past. I disagree and I'm content to leave it at that. I'll only say I called you a troll because I assumed you were talking about the original iPhone and not the iPhone 5. Both arguments are just as incorrect, but for entirely different reasons. I'll also point out that, while I have absolutely no personal desire to buy an iPad mini, nowhere did I say that I think it will fail. I assume it will eventually be the 2nd best selling tablet out there, only behind the original iPad.

the iPhone 5 is an incremental upgrade from previous iPhones. The spec differential is only valid when comparing the new iPhone to an old iPhone. Someone who has an older generation iPhone is unlikely to switch to an android or WP device because it has a bigger screen or an SD slot that the iPhone 5 doesn't have. There's been a significant investment in the ecosystem already (apps/content), and as soon as you switch, you throw that investment away.

comparing an iPhone to android or WP phone using just specs is kinda pointless. What can you actually do that's so different, novel, and innovative? I think whether you're talking about ios, android, or others, there's not much that you can legitimately argue is a huge differentiator. more megapixels, bigger screen, etc are minor in the grand scheme of things.

going back to when the iPhone was launched, it was so far ahead of every other smartphone that everything on the market at the time was instantly obsoleted. between then and now, the iphones have made incremental improvements, and android has become the equalizer. And the result is that you can have a great, highly functional phone that isn't an apple device, and some of those devices even have better specs. The overall experience, however, doesn't begin and end at the device and becomes all about using that device to harness capabilities that various apps give you, as well as creating and consuming content. Once you're invested in either ecosystem, you become somewhat captive to it and can't easily pick up and switch if you get the whim. At the end of the day neither apple nor android people are missing out by not being on the other platform.

but like anything else, people have to vilify the other guy...

There isn't that much difference between the 4 and 5, but it sold at record, move GDP kind of numbers. The mini will do fine, it doesn't matter that its not impressive.

^ right, and that's primarily because of the captive audience that has tons of money invested in apps and content, as well as other peripheral services.

we'll see how the mini does. if their target market is people that want an ebook reader that can do a little more, then it doesn't stand up well to the kindle fire and others on the market. My guess is that people who already have an iPad and iPhone, probably don't feel the need to have something in between, but i've been wrong before.

The iphone 5 is an impressive and nice piece of hardware even if it doesn't have the greatest processor or the largest screen. Its pixel density and benchmark scores are still right up there with the best Android phones (GS3, oneX).

The ipad mini isn't nearly so nice. It has no retina display and is honestly pretty ugly compared to the ipad and iphone 5.

This is the first time I've seen Apple actually compare their product head to head with an Android device, and I think it's because it's the first time they have tried to enter a category where a competitor is already firmly established.

Even beind fairly unimpressive I was considering buying one for my mom for christmas, simply to share a single account and therefore share apps & games, but that was when I thought it would be $250-300. At $330 it's much less appealing.

Honestly, I'm not seeing as big fanfare of the ipad mini coverage compared to past media blasts of other apple products. Even on a lot of tech websites, they don't have the unbiased love for the product and just straight out and say its an ipad 2 mini that didn't even hit the 299 price point.

Its Apple's claim that by this new 8" ipad, it "could take the wind out of the sales of Amazon." Which is such a bold statement that should just be laughed at since the targeted demographics between the Kindle and the iPad are actually completely different, even though the devices offer similar features and abilities.

Most people I know of who have the Kindle (including myself) use it just to read books, a few websites and maybe check my email. I barely use it to watch videos or play games. I honestly have 3 tablets that I keep in various places at my house to pick up and read the news (washroom mostly... lol).

The iPad and the iPhone are two hugely different products. In our culture, the mobile phone has transformed into a "necessity" for daily life and also the fact that they are hugely subsidized by having a 2 year contract that most people accept the reality that one should just upgrade every 1 or 2 years with a new phone just to stay current. If a consumer is already familiar with iOS, 3 out of 5 times its going to be hard for them to just switch to another OS smart phone for the same $200 contracted price.

If anything, this product is more like the Macbook Air as it will compliment a consumer whose already invested in the iTunes market and mobile Apps; just like how the Air complemented a user who already has a mac desktop or a more stout mac laptop.

In any regards, this new ipad mini is not targeting new customers, just the same apple customers who already own their products; this will have very little impact on the rest of the 7" tablet devices. If it does become hugely popular, I will bet you $1 that it will just increase the overall sales of the "compact" tablet market while the Kindles will still continue to grow as well.

I don't get the iPad Mini at all.

Hell, I barely get the iPad...why not just get a netbook, or spend a little more and get an ultrabook? The iPad is cool, but only would justify the price to me in niche applications.

i get a tablet over a netbook...my wife and i HAD a netbook and sold it after our honeymoon (the only reason we got it in the first place)

i bought her a tablet when she went back to school and she loves it...cheaper than a netbook and at least it's different than being just an underpowered laptop

i actually don't get these 7-8" tablets, regardless of who makes them...it still seems to me that if you have a smartphone, a 7" tablet is just a really bad ereader or oversized smartphone without the phone part

and yes, i realize that the argument could be made for a "regular" 10" tablet or a laptop or a smartphone, depending on your usage...i'm obviously not the target audience for a 7" tablet, but i'm not sure i want to be, either, as i don't need another gadget to dick around on when i already have two (or 3, if you count the NST) that will do the same things just as well or better

I wish this was designed more like an oversized iPhone instead of a small iPad. Holding my iPad by the edge is not comfortabl, the iPhone squared edges would be better for this.

Honestly, I like a 7" tablet over a 10" tablet just for the sake of it being comfortable to hand hold it with one hand. 10" tablets just seem a bit too big for my asian hands. 7" is not too big and not to small; perfect for reading books.

What gets me is the "oversized smart phone" comment... Shit all the new smartphones that are coming out are "oversized" I just don't get why a phone need a 4 or 5" lcd. Honestly, the iphone 4 dimentions is the ideal phone sized phone IMHO, even though I don't have one.

an e-reader is "perfect" for reading books...less eyestrain issues (which i realize is not a problem for everyone), significantly better battery life, and a heck of a lot cheaper

e-readers suck for everything else, though

Wow, am I glad that I got the nexus 7.

What a terrible product release. The ONE thing I love about my iPad and the wife's iPhone are the retina displays. To release an 8" display with not only a non-retina display, but at a lower dpi than all of its competition (and a higher pricepoint to boot) is just nuts.

I love the nexus 7. It is JUST the right dimensions to carry in one hand and fit in a back pocket. The iPad mini is in the awkward size that is still too big to carry easily, but just a little too small to use comfortably as a general purpose device.

The price-point is also terrible. It's the first real example of the "apple tax". A mediocre device carrying a premium price. Apple has now made it official: they think their ecosystem is worth an $80 price premium.

This thing just doesn't make any sense. The now obsolete iPad3.1 is going to price drop to a point where it will be a few bucks more than this. Who wouldn't pay $30-40 more for a retina display?

A mediocre iPhone 5, a mediocre mini iPad, mediocre form factor change to the iMac. Welcome to the post Jobs era.
