The man behind Wing Commander and Freelancer is making a new space sim, only for the PC, as a hybid of a single player/open world. You can gain citizenship to the open world through the military campaign of the single player game, or you can just jump into the universe and earn citizenship through civic duty or just not become a citizen and live on the outskirts of civilized space.

He's committed to bi-weekly updates like adding new sectors to the Universe without announcing it so that whichever player explorer discovers it can have it named after them.

They also opened up a kickstarter for it: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cig/star-citizen

Looks sweet

This might not be a popular opinion with this game's audience but I hope it's not too "hardcore" of a sim. My favorite space sim to date is Freelancer, and it was very arcadish.

I'm pretty excited about this and have been following it pretty closely since it was announced. Hopefully they can deliver on what they are promising. I haven't seen too much yet on how hardcore it will be but the creator is saying you should be able to play it with almost anything you can plug into your computer: mouse-keyboard, joysticks, and he has already demoed it on a xbox controller so I can't imagine it being overly complicated if that is the case. That being said it looks like you'll need a pretty good computer (by today's standards) to play and a monster to play it at max settings. They are saying larger ships will have polygon counts in the millions.

It seems like early adopters are getting a pretty big advantage in lifetime insurance or something so that they cant loose their starting ship(based on how much you pledge). Seems like players will be able to purchase in game currency, hopefully this will cut down on bot farming and drive continued support for development since its F2P (im not sold on this, but at least you can earn anything in the game without real dollars). They also plan to support the oculus rift which would be pretty sweet if that pans out.

Still a little to early to see which way the wind is blowing. Looks to be about a 1 year before even alpha is released. No publisher, they are saying that they are going to do whatever they want with this and try to listen to community feedback during development.

No publisher, but he swears he has investors ready to plunk down 10s of millions of dollars if they hit their crowdfunding goals (which they will). Unless he's lying his ass off this game is getting made and is going to be fucking awesome.

I wish I had played more Wing Commander. I was more into X-Wing, TIE Fighter, XvT, & Alliance myself, so I missed the Wing Commander series. But I did later get into Freelancer and LOVED it. Way back in the day my first space sim game was Lightspeed.

One thing I'm confused about with the Kickstarter (maybe I didn't pay enough attention) is that I'm not sure what all the roles are with this game. The dogfighting element is front and center, but they're deployed from these larger ships--are the large ships owned by a single player/operated by a single player? He said there will be FPS elements when you're on foot inside the big ships, et cetera. I'm just trying to get a bigger picture of what multiplayer in this game would be like.

Go to the main site and check out his AMAs on Reddit.

Larger ships can be controlled by multiple players, think the Millenium Falcon with one pilot and multiple gunners.

That's the plan at least. And if you're flying solo, the functions normally controlled by other players will be automated.

And I don't think that he intends to allow players to control super large ships at launch.

Regarding the FPS aspect, he mentioned that boarding and taking over ships (and repelling boarders) will be part of the game.

Pardon me while I squee.

Okay then, thank you for the confirmation.

Excuse me while I seal this information in the darkest corner of my brain so it doesn't consume me while we wait for the game, because that's seriously everything I've ever wanted out of a ship warfare simulator. I want two Battlestar Galactica sized ships with a crew of people running the actual ship, combat pilots, and then a giant epic battle. The feasibility of ships needing multiple people to operate is a difficult idea though, so I'm interested to see how it operates (and if there's an advantage to it over just letting them be automated).

Scale is going to be critical for me. I want to see some furballs with some MASSIVE capital ships involved. I still become really annoyed with misuse of scale in games nowadays. The stupid ass AC-130 in BF3 is smaller than the jet fighters, and it drives me nuts. I feel like PC's nowadays should be capable of doing a much better job than how I see programmers handle the issues of size and proportion.

I think the ships will be scaled pretty well. The universe is probably going to seem small. The devs have already said ship speeds will be sub light to allow for space fights and I think this means planets as well as the solar systems will have to be relatively small.

Here is a rundown what their vision is for the ships and outlines a few of the ships:

When we talk about scaled mechanics, I think it's also critical to say that it leads to a reality scaled gameplay, which is something that is very hard to get out of a video game and that we rarely see. EVE Online is and some MMOs achieve scaled gaming mechanics through "end game" and content that takes a long time to get to--but it's usually tiered moreso than it is a large scale like we're talking about here. In EVE Online you do have players with monolithic ships and players on tiny fighters--and I want to see that in this game. But I don't want them all -doing- the same thing. In EVE Online it was still a player with his own ship, but in this game I'd like to see people (or multiple people) piloting these huge combat vessels who are just almost in a different world compared to the small fighter plane in the flight bay.

I said before that I want it to be like... MMO Battlestar Galactica, if that makes sense. More than one person just PILOTING and running these huge ships, but also combat pilots. Scale and variety.

+1

I never really got into X3:Reunion. I mean, there's a lot that you can do with it since it's open source and allows the addition of scripts, but I don't have time to get into all of that. I just want a "simpler" game.

X3:Reunion is very, very cool. It just offers a level of fun via a complexity greater than I desire.

^^You probably already know this, but unfortunately not to start with. They could only do it as procedurally-generated, like in those Infinity Earth tech demos, and that would reduce the immersion. There might be some atmospheric entry in the automated landing sequences.

IS this going to be like EVE online where you pay monthly to maintain your account? If so, I'll stick with WoT and other FTP games like that... Otherwise, im looking into the $65 package. Origin 300i looks awesome.

It's supposed to be a hybrid model where you can buy cosmetic stuff and a limited amount of in-game currency. They have said you won't pay a monthly subscription or be able to buy anything with cash you cant buy in game. I don't think it is set in stone but the current plan is to limit the amount of in game currency a person can buy in a month. What they are trying to do is let people who can't play 20 hours a day pay to keep up with those who can while also letting people who can play 20 hours a day keep up with people who can buy the max credits/month. I guess those that can spend and play will have the advantage over those that cant. The business model still seems a little fluid but I think that is where they are trying to take the game.

[Edited on July 26, 2013 at 3:07 PM. Reason : tl;dr you should be able to buy the initial game and not spend anything else if you want]

^^^Hell yeah, me too. If you don't mind this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrcEUO7TC28

it'll probably be in a mod on private servers at least.

^Yeah, but even playing a pretty small amount, things should be pretty easily achievable. For example, Chris Roberts said during one of the Constellation (4-crew ship) videos that it would probably be earned with 80 hours of gameplay. With my only other real experience in MMO being WoW, 80 hours barely got you to 60 if you speed-leveled, let alone getting any nice gear.

I'm not so sure about that. I was kinda excited about the Oculus, but I definitely want a HOTAS with a shitload of buttons and we'll probably be switching to keyboard+mouse for the FPS/chatting and maybe also a 360 pad.

I think I'm going to wait for the dogfighting alpha to come out before I settle on the input scheme though. I'm intrigued about manual flying and maybe getting a 3D mouse for 6 axis or something.

I mean once my hands are on the keys I don't need to see it, but switching inputs will be a bitch wearing the Oculus. I imagine it will be extremely disorienting feeling around for things in your RL when you're immersed in the Oculus.

^If you can find someone who was an original/veteran backer, they can "melt" your package and exchange it for one with LTI, then send it back to you. I found a guy on Reddit--the one below.

Normally after you buy, you have to wait for 24 hr cool down, then it can be melted. So you're set. I just waited and then made sure he was online, and he had it back to me within 10 min. He never asked for anything, but I bought him a game on Steam for his trouble. It was before he had the thread up on Reddit--he responded to my whiny post about LTI and offered to help

http://www.reddit.com/r/Starcitizen_trades/comments/1j2bzy/offering_lti_nonprofit_both_paypal_and_store/

EDIT: You can also send him money via Paypal. If you don't send it as a gift, you'll be covered by them. The negative aspect is you'll have to pay a foreign transaction fee, since he's in Germany. You might be able to find US-based people that that wouldn't be an issue for, but you'll still have a Paypal transaction fee.

Just don't try to reason with or understand radical feminists. It's an exercise in futility: they're zealots.

If this shit drives that demographic away from Star Citizen, we'll be better for it.
