Quote : | "The North Carolina State Forestry/Timbersports Club competes in timbersports competitions as seen on ESPN. Timbersports mimics old-time logging techniques using modern equipment. To raise money to travel to competitions and buy equipment such as axes and saws the club sells firewood. The NCSU Forestry Club has a long and distinguished history within the College of Natural Resources. The organization consists of students and faculty advisors dedicated to furthering the interest of forestry. The club participates in woodsmens competitions held throughout the Southeastern United States. Events include men's/womens crosscut, log roll, log birling, pole climb, speed chop, archery, ax-throw, knife-throw, and various technical events that vary per competition including wildlife i.d., wood i.d., pole estimation, tree grading, dendrology i.d., and air photo interpretation.

for anyone who doesn't know (and who wants an idea of size/amount), a cord is 128 cubic feet (4'x4'x8') 10/31/2012 12:40:11 PM |

How long ago was the wood cut? Typically oak needs to "season" for 6-9 months before it will burn well. 10/31/2012 12:55:47 PM |

If it has recently been cut, I would recommend buying it this year and burning it next year.
I already have a whole barn full of wood so I don't need any, just giving a heads up.

yes, Fumbler and i did while we were in school. we both did crosscut. we went to competition in mississippi forever ago. it was fun
found a pic! this is from the women's competition in MS in 2004. yes the back of the shirts said "got wood?" we got 2nd place out of maybe 14 other schools. i have a plaque somewhere. i don't remember our whole team ranking that year though. i was so proud of myself, having competed & placed well despite dealing with some pretty bad myasthenia gravis symptoms. ]10/31/2012 1:53:28 PM |

firewood is overpriced in raleigh
used to get a huge dump trailer load of kiln-dried oak delivered for ~$120 iirc 10/31/2012 2:33:45 PM |

I thought that sounded expensive too, but I have never bought firewood so I didn't want to chime in.
I am fortunate to have a friend that owns a tree removal service. So whenever he removes any trees out my way he dumps them on my property. 10/31/2012 2:37:23 PM |

i found that by the time i cut it, hauled it, split it, and stacked it all up i just wasn't paying myself very much. not even minimum wage. i did it anyway. guy i bought it from had tractors and dump trucks and shit and a real deal firewood processor. 10/31/2012 3:05:43 PM |

I actually enjoy cutting/splitting it myself. It's a great workout, even using a log splitter. 10/31/2012 3:07:51 PM |

i don't mind it when it's cold outside 10/31/2012 3:11:19 PM |

But I agree with your previous statement. If I did the math on time spent, effort, gas, etc. then it would probably make more sense to just buy it. Especially at $120 a truck load.
