There looks to be a ton of information and shit online, but I'm looking for overall cost and experience from people who've done this before.

What I imagine:

*3 day weekend with 3-4 adult couples (2 dogs, no kids)
*Sometime in Jan/Feb
*A sorta-private cabin so we can cook a huge meal or two and relax (I'd rather not stay in a ski-hotel, but I don't want to have to drive 45 minutes to a slope, either)
*Ski passes for everyone with rentals and beginner classes.

Has anyone here planned a trip like this? Any suggestions or recommendations? What should each person/couple be looking to spend?

It sounds simple enough. I would expect the cost to be about $500 a person, but I honestly have no clue.

that seems high to me, but i don't know what ski passes cost

i would assume the cabin wouldn't be more than $100/person for 3 nights

^If you are not looking to ski and just want a mountain getaway, there are tons of cheap ass places in Brevard. I am talking multi-bedroom houses with outdoor hot tubs for like $100 a night.

The only issue is that most of them only book by the week. So you probably want to plan for a longer vacation, and plan to go with another couple

Gas to get there from raleigh
food for three days
lodge rental
ski pass
ski rental
beer/wine
gas for the trip back

I'm guessing all that equals about $500 a person. am i missing an expense?

You will save on the lodging having that many couples going. $500 per person is a bit of a stretch. I'd estimate more like $500 per couple

But it all depends on how close you want to be to the slopes

Not specifically because I don't ski, but my GF is from the Boone/Banner Elk area and we go up there very often. With the slopes opening early this year, costs should be fairly low compared to last year when everyone was in desperation mode.

But I know that if you can rent 1 big house for your whole party, it will definitely save you money. And there are tons of them up there that can easly host 3-4 couples.

I live in Raleigh. I'd prefer to do it in the NC mountains.

"45 minutes to a slope"

Mountains in Jan/Feb -- anywhere you drive you should plan at least being 45 minutes

Skiing plan for $100/person
Cabins plan for $100-200/night

My parents have a place ~30 minutes from Boone, ~45 minutes to nearest slope -- great place to go any time of year, good choice

It's actually crazy that you posted this. My husband and I were just talking about this the other day. We want to plan something within the next couple of months just so we can have something to look forward to. Mountains are easy enough for a near-future-weekend get away. Here's what I came across and loved:

http://www.blueridgerentals.com/result_1.asp?mode=search&table=Rental

We wanted a place near water, with a hot tub, and a dope ass view.

We are also looking for mountain houses on a mountain where we can step out off the back porch and go snowboard down the mountain.....any ideas?

Try Maggie Valley. There are plenty of cabins for rent and a ski slope that's extremely convenient to the valley.

Also check out Joey's Pancake House for an awesome breakfast, and J. Arthur's Restaurant for the best prime rib in NC.

$68 for a day lift pass at Sugar Mountain? I almost fell out of my chair seeing that.

Just another reminder of why I never ski in NC.

^^That's why you don't ski the east coast on a weekend. Weekday rates are better and so much less crowded so it doesn't seem like such a huge ripoff

Cabins really arent that expensive

ones that will house a group like you describe can be about 95 a night for a really nice cabin, in fact i just got back from one this week in the nantahala area. I booked through romanticcabins.com

they go higher than that but that depends on location and what its near, we had to drive to murphy and andrews for groceries and even restaurants, so gas during your stay may or may not be a careful consideration

the thing is you have to plan well in advance they get booked the hell up, and this cabin didnt book by the week but rather they run a good special if you choose to stay a certain length of time

mae sure you have 4WD or winter tires, they dont tell mention the grade of the access road to the cabin, or if it is paved or not. You might do like me and spend the trip walkin up and down a mountain side to your cabin because your SUV couldnt make it up the wet asphalt bout halfway up
