Extortion for money and extortion for intel info are two different things. A "honey pot" getting to that level could be catastrophic. I'm just glad that the FBI found out before now and was investigating. It could have been "harmless" but it's just not worth the chance. 11/9/2012 6:51:55 PM |

I don't think bidding is the word you're looking for. Nonetheless...
To the less conspiracy-minded, there's always the obvious explanation that Petraeus genuinely feels being caught cheating on his wife prevents him from being an effective leader at the CIA (and, in fact, it probably does). It's also well within the realm of possibility (and perfectly reasonable) that Petraeus felt the same way about Clinton.

Quote : | "While David Petraeus was still serving as a four-star general in the U.S. Army, he began exchanging emails with the woman who would eventually write his biography. After Petraeus retired from military service and accepted a new post -- director of the Central Intelligence Agency -- those email exchanges, it's believed, turned into something else: an affair.
The affair might have concluded as so many others do -- temporarily clandestine, permanently concealed -- were it not for the technology that helped to ignite it in the first place. The FBI, the Wall Street Journal reports, began to suspect that Petraeus's personal Gmail account had been hacked -- so it launched an inquiry to determine whether someone else was accessing his email messages. In the process, the agency discovered what Google's servers had known all along: that the head of the CIA, the keeper of the country's secrets, had been keeping a secret of his own.
So how could a (potentially) hacked email account lead to resignation of one of the most powerful men in the nation? Why, if the account in question is a personal one, does it matter?
Because when you're the director of the CIA, very few things are, strictly speaking, personal. Your Gmail account certainly isn't. Even the most mundane elements of your life can relate in their way to the interests of the nation. "The computer-security investigation -- which raised questions about a potential compromise to national security -- points to one reason Mr. Petraeus and the White House decided he couldn't remain in the senior intelligence position," the Journal explains. And that's partly because
'an extramarital affair has significant implications for an official in a highly sensitive post, because it can open an official to blackmail. Security officials are sensitive to misuse of personal email accounts -- not only official accounts -- because there have been multiple instances of foreign hackers targeting personal emails.'
Intelligence, in other words, can compromise government agencies as much as it can empower them. Petraeus's affair wasn't just an affair; it was a potential security breach. One that was allowed to take place in part because the decorated war hero had done what millions of his fellow Americans do every day: He sent some emails." |

But to have the leader of our intelligence agency sharing an email password with his mistress? Yeah, that's grounds for termination.

Quote : | "Ex-CIA director David Petraeus has told friends he was shocked [lol] to find that his biographer and girlfriend, Paula Broadwell, was suspected of sending anonymous, threatening emails to a Petraeus friend she saw as a romantic rival.
A close Petraeus associate said Monday that FBI investigators told Petraeus that Broadwell sent anonymous emails to Jill Kelley, a Petraeus family friend from his time at Central Command in Tampa, warning her to stay away from him. The Petraeus associate spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss confidential conversations with Petraeus. The CIA director resigned last week after confessing to the affair.
Petraeus was not shown the emails, but was told the tone and content seemed threatening to Kelley, prompting her to report them, the close Petraeus associate said. That triggered the investigation that led the FBI to Broadwell and evidence of her affair with Petraeus.
The affair began in 2011, two months after he became CIA director, a friend and former top aide said Monday. The case has sparked an uproar in Congress over FBI investigative tactics and complaints by lawmakers they weren't told soon enough about the probe rocking the intelligence and law enforcement establishment.
Petraeus, who resigned last week as the nation's head spy, and his family are said to be devastated over the affair, especially his wife Holly, who "is not exactly pleased right now," said Steve Boylan, a friend and former Petraeus spokesman who spoke to Petraeus over the weekend.
"Furious would be an understatement," Boylan told ABC's "Good Morning America."" |

There's a difference between something being a "bigtime scandal" and a significant event though, right? F&F was actually fucked up. It got a lot of coverage but nothing really came of it. That's standard procedure in the United States, though. The biggest crimes are the most likely to go unpunished. Quote : | "CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Reuters) - FBI agents searched the North Carolina house of Paula Broadwell on Monday, signaling renewed activity in the investigation that revealed her extramarital affair with CIA Director David Petraeus that led to his resignation.
Agents entered the house in Charlotte, North Carolina, carrying boxes around 9:00 p.m. (0200 GMT Tuesday) and were still there almost two hours later.
U.S. officials had said in recent days that their investigation in the Petraeus affair was largely complete and thatprosecutors had determined it was unlikely they would bring charges in the case, which started as suspected cyber-harassment involving Broadwell and Jill Kelley, a Petraeus friend.

My thoughts as well. I know Petraeus is older, but Broadwell is only 40. Surely she had to be smarter than to think there would be no way to trace the affair if they just used anonymous Gmail accounts?
I don't understand the whole "the FBI used the Gmail metadata to track the email source..." aspect of this, but I thought everyone understood that nothing you write in an email is private. Doesn't Gmail literally scan your email messages and sell the content to advertisers for targeted ad purposes?

^^From my understanding, they didn't actually send each other emails. They shared a gmail account and sent messages by saving their emails to one another as drafts. The reason why they were discovered is because Broadwell went crazy and started e-mailing hostile messages to one of Petraeus' lady friends.
If Broadwell didn't start threatening that other woman, then nobody would have known because nobody would have ever cared to find out. 11/13/2012 12:38:45 PM |

The CIA has dismissed as "baseless" and "uninformed" claims made by the former lover of ex-agency chief David Petraeus that Libyan militants were held in secret US prisons prior to the deadly Benghazi consulate attack.
Paula Broadwell, the biographer whose affair with Petraeus led to his abrupt resignation Friday, alleged that the assault, in which US ambassador Christopher Stevens was killed, was an attempt to free men being detained in a covert CIA annex.
