Norton keeps notifying me of svchost.exe application is blocked. It's getting annoying. I went to Symantec to take a look and it appears that everyone is having this problem.
Should I switch to the quieter McAfee?

Consider supplementing it with the ClamAV-based Immunet, now that so much malware is specifically written to evade MSE: http://www.immunet.com/free/index.html
It's still about as unintrusive as MSE alone and much less so than a typical AV suite. 11/12/2012 11:01:27 AM

I would argue that it's not working if the popups are not clear enough to illustrate to the user why something is being blocked. 11/12/2012 4:50:58 PM

^^Indeed, and the main reason I still recommend MSE, despite its dwindling effectiveness as malware is increasingly designed to circumvent it, is its near-total lack of false positives. 11/12/2012 8:10:38 PM

Well if MSE is slowly being defeated by circumvention through malware, is there another route?
False positives are seriously beeping every four minutes. Usually, that wouldn't be a problem... just mute the volume, but sucks if you want to look at video or listen to music. 11/13/2012 10:54:14 AM

^^^Have you considered avast! or Avira?
Anyway, the key word is "slowly" and I had already suggested a supplement to MSE called Immunet. 11/13/2012 5:19:19 PM

I like AVG. It's quiet and always seems to jump in when needed.
This is nearly a year old, but still has some nice info: http://lifehacker.com/5865356/the-best-antivirus-app-for-windows

I prefer ESET NOD32, much higher detection rate and same fast speed as MSE, consistently in the top 3 AV's. Got a 3-user license for $10 over the holidays. MSE's ranking has dropped quite significantly in the last round of tests. Avira is the best of the free options but I just couldn't stand the pop-up ad to buy it once a day. So MSE is at least free and annoyance free, better than nothing I guess.
