Here's the deal. I have been ripping/burning DVDs the same way for like 10 years, so I am pretty antiquated. I had a desktop set up in a spare room with just enough memory on it for the ripped files and the "to burn" files. This desktop was running Windows XP. I would typically use DVD Fab to rip, DVD Shrink to compress, and Nero (through DVD Shrink) to burn to disc.
I recently bought a new laptop with Windows 8 and a much faster DVD RW drive, so I am ready to tear down the dinosaur desktop. DVD Fab works fine for the ripping, and DVD Shrink works fine for the compressing. But none of the versions of Nero that are compatible with DVD Shrink are compatible with Windows 8.
So yeah, it appears it is time for me to "get with the times" and change up my methods. What FREE programs are you kids using these days to rip/compress/burn DVDs?
Oh yeah, and stay off my lawn!

I have no idea because I haven't ever needed to burn a DVD, but why not move on from physical media? 11/16/2012 11:19:23 AM |

Wouldn't that suffice? 11/17/2012 11:58:36 AM |

What is the output from DVD shrink? If its an iso image, just right click on it and select burn disc. 11/17/2012 12:40:46 PM |

Why do you even need DVD Fab? DVD Shrink rips and compresses at the same time...I use this to output an ISO file which I can mount using a virtual drive or burn to a DVD if for some retarded reason I need to do that. 11/17/2012 3:20:29 PM |

sounds like someone that uses netflix and rips whatever he gets in the mail. nevermind compressing the already low quality dvd to even lower quality to make sure it fits on dvd5.
what is this? I don't even... 11/17/2012 4:15:12 PM |

I for one use CDBurnerXP to burn DVDs; BTW Windows 8 doesn't come with free DVD-burning software. 11/17/2012 8:48:07 PM |

^ my Windows 8 does. Well, at least a free disk image burner. Oddly enough, it is called "Windows Disk Image Burner." It pops up by following the instructions Noen posted.
It also has Cyberlink Power2Go, and from what I can tell it is a full version not just a demo.

^^^I just learned that Windows 8 Media Center Pack is now free until 31 January 2013 for Win8 Pro, and despite what I had thout, it has nothing to do with burning DVDs, just reading them: http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/window-on-windows/get-the-windows-8-media-center-pack-for-free-but-be-prepared-to-wait/6928 12/8/2012 9:36:33 PM |

Now if there was just a way to get Windows 8 to stop copying all the to-be-burned files to drive C before burning them to a DVD, I'd be perfect. 1/4/2013 12:33:06 PM |
