tired of idiots saying they didn't like this move because TOB ran a clean program. WTF is that? Is that our goal? On-the-field results don't matter? And who said that a clean program can't be achieved with a more successful program? If we can break the top 25, challenge for ACC championships, and elevate our bowl prospects, does that automatically mean we don't have a clean program?

^^ yes... I wonder how many of those people actually watch our games. I think Debbie could see the home crowds dwindling as easily as the rest of us.

i, for one, am quite happy that while our biggest rival was getting investigated for rampant cheating and academic fraud, our program was being run by one of the most by-the-books coaches in the NCAA (at least per his reputation). would i prefer a winning ACC record as well? of course. but i do give TOB credit for keeping us clean and improving our academic performance. he should be commended for that.

*and just to be clear, i'm not upset at all about him being fired, it was probably the right time for that. I'm just saying that i do appreciate how he ran things for us from a compliance and academic perspective.

Everyone respects and appreciates TOB's off-the-field results. No one disputes that.

But football is an on-the-field game, and in the end, his results there were below expectations, even his own expectations. He seemingly had teams that should have done much better against a down ACC. He just didn't have the results on the field.

\/ ok, MOST people respect and appreciate those results; other people just don't care. No one is knocking him for bad off the field issues. But off-field results are only secondary to on-field results.

I don't care about off the field performance, but only because I assume there are enough in the athletics department to make sure it gets done. As a fan, I only car about on the field performance and bragging rights to friends and colleagues.

I can never tell if you're serious. Being the intellectual liberal you try to portray yourself as (i know you're probably just an alias), this opinion surprises me. Of course, on-field performance is the most important thing in sports, but I did find comfort in knowing that our program was run cleaner than many. I know our recruiting suffered, but I found comfort in TOB's no-nonsense approach to coaching. I imagine he told his recruits and players: Don't get me wrong, we want you to play for us, but if you can't make the minimum grades, if you can't follow the rules, if you can't keep your nose clean, if you think this is all about you, then we don't want you here. Again, I know that approach doesn't appeal to some of the elite talent, but keep in mind, this is COLLEGE athletics.

But this is an exciting time, and I'm not saying that it wasn't time to let TOB go. Hopefully we can get a stand-up coach who can reel in some of the elite talent and improve on TOB's consistent mediocrity.

They were joking about that UVA moving truck and TOB on 99.9 yesterday. I guess UVa is saving some money using that truck or maybe TOB is just trolling away like always...

^ Yeah I did only because Ovies and Gold on their show yesterday made it out like it really happened. Ovies kept saying "this is not a joke and we've got the proof". Oh well I figured TOB would do something like this since he hates Yow/NC State.

Did we send a truck like that when we brought him here? It's like UVA is trying tot roll us, but unsuccessfully since we want him gone anyway.

http://www.dailyprogress.com/cavalierinsider/football/article_2c9f9fb8-64f7-11e2-ab4b-0019bb30f31a.html

The grapes don't get much more sour than this article. This is my favorite part:

Quote :
"Under his direction, the Wolfpack went to four bowl games in five years and posted consistency even though his last two teams were decimated by untimely injuries. Yet, State AD Debbie Yow, who wrecked the Maryland football program before migrating to Raleigh, decided to fire O’Brien after this past season’s 7-6 record (4-4 ACC, 5-1 at home)."

i like how they spun his record only showing vs UNC and top 25, but left out his terrible record vs BC/Wake and everyone outside the top 25.
