Certainly trying not to overreact here...after all, we’re inexperienced and it’s our first road game. But play calling has been questionable all game. I expected the defense, secondary especially, to be a bit do a strength this year...looks like we’re year for another underachieving defense. Our schedule remains favorable with a weaker ACC...but most remaining games look like a toss up.

Missing JSW, Bolo and McCloud today too. But I guess WVU offense has not looked good and I think they're missing two OL and a WR today

McKay just isn't good enough

Losing to a less talented WVU team. McCloud and JSW would help but come on.

Yeah missing perhaps the best DL and best CB is hard to overcome.

Really disappointed in Mckay today...that doesn’t really belong in this thread, but whatever

He's a pretty great recruiter. But it's evident after 7 years his recruiting will not make up for the fact that he can't coach.

Dude needs to figure out some shit. One year of a bad QB (following multiple years of NFL QBs) is excusable, but we're currently lined up for this the next three without an obvious solution in sight. The Co-OC idiocy with two previously bad OCs isn't inspiring much confidence, either.

^Seriously white knighting today? We were a 19.5 fav over Ball State and they played like the better team and outgained us. I will repeat Ball State had more yards than NC State.

I’m not so sure that’s right.

McKay, Hockman, Leary, Ty Evans, Ben Finley...maybe they all will suck, but odds are that one will make a serviceable ACC QB

Who are his best wins? I know he had back to back 9 win seasons but is it because he's a great coach or is it because the schedule was convenient? Outside of Clemson, it's not like anyone we've been facing in recent years are world beaters. I feel like Tom O'Brien had more quality wins against ranked opponents. It's going to be interesting to see how we fare against a mediocre ACC schedule, I see lots of trouble.

We’ve been over this a million times. Likely within the last couple pages of this thread. You aren’t wrong. He doesn’t have signature wins. And that doesn’t mean we have to fire him

^^ I don't have the desire to read through multiple pages of thread talk, in the grand scheme of things it ain't that important to me. TOB lost to bad teams, but lol Doeren hasn't?

^Doeren should be shown the same treatment TOB was, I mean TOB was literally fired after a winning season.

The only thing Doeren has proven is that he's an average ACC coach.

sure. when DD decides that recruiting isn't important, we can show him the door as well. until then, the program is on more solid footing and a better trajectory than it was towards the end of the TOB era.

So Miami thumped Bethune Cookman and beat a weak Louisville team

South Carolina's one win came against Charleston Southern

sure those are P5 wins but they aren't quality P5 wins.

Discussing if Miami or USC were good or bad wins this early in the year is a waste of time/energy. Wait until the end of the year for that talk. SP+ thinks they're both top 30 but it's still early in the year.

Finley was a 3* and Brissett was a 4*. Let’s not pretend they were 5* studs coming in that were destined for greatness.

Well, unlike Hockman, they had at least won their #1 spot at some point. Although neither had looked great in game.

Dave is frustrating for many reasons but if he was those few margins better at the things that frustrate us the most he'd probably be coaching Tennessee right now, so it's a catch 22 in some respects

It took this staff seven games to figure out the highest rated recruit at QB was the answer.

It would be nice to start this season over and let Leary play against the easy teams.

Idk...I mean i agree that Leary looks better. But I don’t think it’s so black and white. It’s not hard to believe that McKay would be further along than Leary. BC is also a shitty defense, so against a more competent D he might struggle more. I’m not dismissing Leary’s performance today. He looks like our best option.

I just don’t think it’s as clear cut as “our coaches must be stupid to not see it earlier”.

We have yet to play even an average defense in a conference game. We have played probably 3 of the 4 worst defenses in the conference so far. I can't believe it took 2+ games of absolutely awful offense to switch from Hockman to Leary.

The offensive play calling was terrible too. 1 yard line and can't try a qb sneak or at least but qb under center.

And who had the idea to have Hockman start out with multiple 1rst down deep shots on first few series

Our D is decimated by injuries, 6th string qbs and JSW out again, but that was still a wildly embarrassing effort. Defense should have to watch that first down run by the QB from the 0 yard line on a loop

I feel like we hear the same thing every away game:

"The team didn't do the fundamentals. The team didn't play hard."

What is the pattern that is keeping our team from being motivated for away games?

I don’t know that I agree with that.

Here’s some recent road games under DD

2019:
Loss to WV - didn’t come out flat, defense eventually got worn down and couldn’t stop WV. But don’t think motivation was the issue. WV exploited some weakness in our D. 21-21 at halftime.
Loss to BC - inability to convert in the red zone and an early pick 6 kept this game from ever being close. But I blame that on our shitty offense, not coming or flat or lacking fundamentals.
Loss to FSU - 17-6 at half, 24-13 late...it wasn’t really out of reach. Defense mostly played well. This loss was a product of us having little to no offensive production (that will be a theme most of this year, unless things change drastically with Leary).

2018:
Win @marshall
We got Stomped @clemson (maybe we came out flat but Clemson won the title so I it wouldn’t have mattered if we were flat or not, Clemson is just that good)
Loss @ Cuse - probably did come out flat, Cuse jumped out to a big lead. But we fought back. Probably hungover/beat up from the Clemson game idk. Our secondary got torched - also a trend you’ll see with DD teams.
We dominated @UL - most teams dominated them last year
OT win @UNC - an ugly game, we didn’t play great. But I’m not sure we really came out flat.

I think losing games on the road is a sign of a mediocre team. Beating P5 teams on the road isn’t easy, especially for a flawed team like we are. I dont think there’s any grand excuse other than we just aren’t very good.

Doeren on WVU game:

Quote :
"We have to own that first and foremost as coaches. The players have to be able to take the coaching, like we’ve done. I thought we did a really good job of that in the first two games. We just weren’t ourselves in that football game. The blocked punt was a major mistake and a mental error on that play. We were trying to play catchup from that point on, and we weren’t throwing the football well enough to do that, particularly when we look at 5 of 17 on third down."

Doeren on BC game:

Quote :
"I don't know where to start. We didn't tackle well, we didn't set edges, didn't play low enough, didn't have good enough technique. They did a better job than we did. That's the bottom line."

"They pushed us around at times. Their running backs ran through contact. You're not going to have multiple guys in the sets they're at to the ball. You've got one or two guys that get there. At times we made the plays. Too many times we didn't.""

^^ I’m not trying to be a smart ass and I’m not trying to defend the coaching staff and act like they’ve been flawless. But I think some of what DD is saying there can be boiled down to “we aren’t a very good football team and when you aren’t a very good football team (due to youth, injuries, talent, whatever the reason may be) you don’t always play well”.

In the past I have definitely seen State teams Come out sluggish in noon road games. But those teams were also more talented and better overall, making those sluggish flat games even more obvious and frustrating. We definitely played shitty against BC. I just attribute that to us having poor QB play and no run game on offense rather than coming out flat. We couldn’t convert on 4th and short near the goal line and we threw a pick 6. I put that on a poor offense more than anything.

I thought we played great defense in the first quarter, then spiraled out of control from the second on.

I'd buy demoralization instead of un-motivation for our team's breakdown, but that's still a coaching issue.
