Seems like a good hire.

I liked O'Brien and I think he did a good job of lifting this football program out of the gutter and into respectability, and there's now a solid foundation in place here to take the program to the next level, and hopefully he can do that. I'm interested in seeing how this plays out.

Yeah, that's commitment. Hopefully he doesn't regret leaving after he has been here a few years.

As a State fan, I'm used to coaching switches not really having an effect, so I can't get super excited about this hire. I mean yeah the guy won at NIU, but I doubt he'll suddenly transform our mediocre program into a powerhouse. Besides, if he did, he'd probably bounce to an even better school for more money. Yes, I'm a bitter, broken hearted State football fan

Even if you liked what TOB has done here all indications seem to be that this guy has similar values in how he runs his program, he just wins a lot more. In that respect, if you liked TOB going from a 64 year old TOB to a 41 year old TOB is still a good move.

During the presser Doeren mentioned that NIU was promoting from within, so I guess he already knew that. Also explains why he said he had a top 5 of OC's and he wasn't sure who he was going to get yet.

The Wolfpacker mentioned Texas A&M WR coach David Beaty as a candidate for OC.

Looking at his resume, this would be underwhelming. Hopefully he'd draw more off the Sumlin/Kingsbury offense than whatever they were doing at Kansas.

I have one MAJOR concern with this hire: throughout the press conference and in one-on-one interviews afterwards, there was a conspicuous lack of super-loud nasal inhalations. NOT ONCE did it sound like he was trying to snort a microphone.

Makes sense to me. You might get an initial bump in results or you might have to climb out of an initial hole but in the end we'll end up right back at just south of mediocre. At least that's my take on what they meant.

I don't remember Byrd playing that much. It was mainly Amerson, Johnson, Wilson and Burriss.

Johnson was moved to corner this year, but was able to play some hybrid positions as well. I think we see him move back to safety next year to get some experience back there and to help with run support.

Burriss will start at corner. Byrd may start at the other.

The last safety spot could be between Tim Buckley (Penn State transfer) and Hakim Jones - both will be redshirt sophomores.

yup

we were cautiously optimistic about Lowe and TOB and look what we got. Of course Lowe had much poorer results, but I think people were even more disappointed in TOB. Sid was over his head from day one, wheres as TOB just couldn't ever break through to the next level.

In six years, we will see how well liked Gott/Doeren are...

i thought sidney lowe was going to do wonderful wonderful things here. it was incredibly disappointing.

i expected TOB to do better than he did, but 2010 is about what i expected from him, he just only did it once. and he gave us 5 carolina wins. it wasn't horrible.

100% serious. After herb left, the coaching search was an ABSOLUTE disaster. Nobody wanted the job so we settled for a former player that had some asst coaching experience in the NBA. Perhaps I was in the minority, but I was not happy with the hire. My expectations were that he'd be around for a couple of seasons before we could land a better hire. While some might argue that he was a great recruiter, his teams were extremely poorly coached and we were worse off than with herb. Hard to argue against that.

TOB on the other hand had built a solid program at BC with like 8 winning seasons/bowl appearances. I was hopeful that if he could win at school like BC (nobody in the Boston area gives a flying fuck about BC athletics), he could take NCSU to the next level. His stint in Raleigh was actually WORSE than at BC, despite having better facilities and more resources. I'm pleased with the 5 straight wins over UNC and indifferent about mediocre bowl berths, but he was an even bigger bust than I predicted.

So yeah. Maybe it's just me, but I never saw Lowe being the coach to lead us back to our former glory days, and I was actually dumb enough to think that TOB could make NCSU a better football program than BC.

Are we going with the "VA is going to buy him away from us" mindset or the "Doeren probably doesn't want him in favor of a better DC" route?

my bad, I forgot about his venerable 79–228 (.257) record as HC

had to look it up on wikipedia LOL

Look, I'm not saying Sid wasn't a huge letdown- I just was personally more irritated by TOB and his inability to take State above mediocrity. He flirted with being an above average coach at times, but overall he felt like the bigger bust to me. I just felt bad for Sid when he was fired. He obviously cared a lot about the program but just couldn't get it done

I suppose we can just agree to disagree
