"Update 11/16: Alternative “95X” debuted this morning on 95.3 W237BZ Clayton/Raleigh while promising the second translator serving greater Durham will launch in early 2013.
Rebroadcasting WDCG-HD2, the station is being overseen by Chris Edge, the former KGSR Austin PD who recently returned to Clear Channel Raleigh as OM. Edge will also host afternoons on 95X. Middays will be held by Eggz, who also hosts nights on sister CHR “G105” under the name Tyler.
Original Report 6/27: Clear Channel is about to launch Alternative Rock “95X” on a pair of translators surrounding Raleigh, NC.
W237BA Wake Forest is in the process of being moved to 95.1 where it will operate with 175 watts from 34 meters high. The larger signal is 95.3 W237BZ Clayton, which will operate with 250 watts from the tower of sisters 93.9 WKSL and 105.1 WDCG. WDCG-HD2 will be the originating station for the translators. Both translators are owned by Radio Training Network, which is also moving its 107.7 W299AP Apex to that tower where it will be fed by a subchannel of Clear Channel’s 100.7 WRVA, along with five other translators in the region.
For the new “95X“, Clear Channel has registered 951XFM.com, 953XFM.com, AltRock95X.com, ExtremeCountry95X.com, NewRock951.com, NewRock953.com, and NewRock95X.com. The last of which is the domain which all the others redirect to.
The station will only cover parts of Raleigh and directly connecting areas of the Triangle region. Durham and Chapel Hill are unlikely to receive 95X via the translators at this time."

Awesome. Living in Carrboro I am right on the edge of 100.3, but it dies by the time I hit 540. Since I usually travel east to visit family, I have been stuck listening to 96.1, so this will be nice to have an alt rock option for more of my trip.

Plus with 96 sucking goat dong since their makeover 95X is a great alternative. Finally I have something to listen to on FM besides 91.5 and 88.1.

Quote :
"For over 25 years now “Alternative Rock” and “Triangle Radio” have been like oil and water. While smaller cities (like Norfolk and Wilmington) around the country have enjoyed commercial alternative stations, Raleigh has been stuck with the same repetitious offering of country/classic rock/dance/adult contemporary…until now. 95.3, billed as “95X” debuted Friday and finally brings the Triangle up to date with other markets where “Mumford & Sons”, “The Temper Trap”, and “The Killers” aren’t met with strange looks.

The station is actually a Clear Channel offering of WDCG-HD2, broadcasted on a weak signal out of Apex. Chris Edge left KGSR in Austin to come run the station, and the plan is to get a second frequency in the western half of the Triangle.

For faithful readers of Pitchfork, or even avid fans of MTV’s 120 Minutes, the playlist will not be terribly interesting. Commercial radio stations will have their “play the hits” and saturation advertising weaknesses (“Hennnnnnrick…”), after all, however the playlist reads more like “new rock”, or essentially what 106 and QDR were doing at the moment when they coexisted, which is much needed. Before Friday, the newest real rock band played on commercial stations was the Foo Fighters, a band that has been around for 17 years. Welcome to the Triangle, 95X!"

ive had hd radio for a while now and this station has been broadcast on 105.1-2 for a while now. It's pretty much the only one I listen to the few times I use my car each week.

I agree, if you have a commute. I cancelled mine when I got my current job, as my commute now is just a 10 minute bus ride. XM/Sirius got too damn expensive to keep for the 2 trips a month we take back east that are all of 2 hours.

For my commute now, I just use the iPod. My Inno live reception on the bus was shit, even with terrestrial repeaters.

^^ that was what I had and was close to giving it up (especially when O&A were iffy about returning) but the new DVR receiver (Lynx) is great and I'm able to dock it in my office and get full reception too which helps.

I would go crazy listening to terrestrial all day and don't want to stream using data on my phone too much.

So 95.3 FM eh? I tuned in yesterday (south Raleigh) and got nothing but static. How weak is this fucking signal?

The old 96 rock or the new radio 96 or whatever they call it?

Agreed the commercials + repetition would drive me insane...though I probably could listen to a combo of 88.1 and 91.5 all day if I lacked data.

^ I've received the signal fine near state and all the way near 540 up in North Raleigh. My understanding is it's broadcast out of Apex so you shouldn't have a problem in South Raleigh.

Same thing. Listened some on the way to work, at lunch, and on the way home. Only heard 2 songs that I hadn't heard on 96.1 before and I haven't listened to 96.1 in years.

My Integra has an admittedly weak antenna but I can't really pick up this station anywhere in South Raleigh or Cary. 90% static 10% a song I can barely make out.

Ugh

When I first tuned it I must have hit a really good stretch. Every time I've tuned in since it's just been a slight notch above 96.1.

Back to 99.9 and 91.5 I guess.

I worked for 96 for a while and the program director there is a tool with god awful taste in music. He's also a dick. The GM is super nice, but he lets the PD do whatever, and they are both committed to formats that do well in other markets with certain demos, but don't do very well here. Their target audience WAS blue collar males with a median income of $40k. Who knows what the hell they are going for now.

I dig on 95.1 so far. They play some shit that irks me, but it's better than what we've had in Raleigh for the past 16 years, so I'll take it.

I was excited about 95.3, but it seems to play some shit I simply have never heard of and dont like. Of the approx 5 times I've had it on while working, I've heard 2-3 songs I know and then other stuff I have never heard.

That being said, maybe others like it. Still not what I was hoping for though.

^^Was hoping for 90's rock. Kinda like Lithium plays on XM.

I know whats on 95 is probably made in the 90's and 00's, but its just to far alternative for me.

Not trying to flame here, but I don't know what you mean.

Too alternative compared to what? '90s rock? Because that would mean (to me) that you either want Stones and Zeppelin or some far-out noisy shit (if we're staying in the rock realm).

There is nothing about that station that is alternative, much less, far too alternative. Just another shitty Clear Channel station masquerading as a quasi-alternative station. #FuckClearChannel

100.3 is my savior. It's got a lot of syndicated crap like Loveline cause it's an Iheartradio station but they still find my groove 75% of the time and the DJ's are pretty cool too. The big downfall is they take anybody's advertising money and put a lot of enzyte-like supplement ads on the air.

100.3 isn't too bad, good point. Weak signal though (Greensboro right?) so it doesn't always come in.

you don't remember Sponge from the mid-90s, and their break-out album "rotting pinanta", and their hit "plowed"? (it actually wasn't too bad, for mid-90s radio music)

^^^Yea, 100.3 is on the edge for my car antenna in Carrboro. I can usually pick it up here and it sounds good, and can travel as far as Durham, but any further east, forget about it.

^I was surprised about the Sponge thing too. They are obviously not a huge band, but Plowed got a lot of airtime when it was released. I like that one song, dunno about the rest of the album though.

100.3 is alright - they tend to play a few songs way too much, but still get occasional goodness.

What other station plays on 100.3? Around Wade it randomly picks up preachers and gospel music.

I was listening on my way home yesterday and heard some old 311, followed by Atlas Genius and Rise Against.

Other times that I've tuned in there was a lot more of the 96Rock type music, but overall I like this station enough to add it to the rotation

^^^Apparently the only other station broadcasting on 100.3 in NC is WLGP, a gospel station out of Jacksonville.

Once before I moved to the Triangle, I was driving into work at like 5:00 on 64 between Tarboro and Rocky Mount, and was scanning through my presets and actually caught 100.3 way out there. I was really surprised. It only lasted about 10 minutes, as I approached Rocky Mount it started to fade, but that is the farthest I have ever picked up 100.3.

So did anybody notice that 100.7 The River has now become Classic Rock WRDU? They dropped Kitty Kinnin and basically have resurrected 106.1 on a new channel.
