I realize this is a morbid topic, but I have a friend who's father passed unexpectedly in Morehead City the other day and was wondering if there were any good local places that put together condolence packages.

Example from Harry & David: http://www.harryanddavid.com/h/gift-baskets-tower-boxes/sympathy-gifts

Guy at work is from Morehead City and his dad passed away suddenly yesterday. As the native North Carolinian I've been tasked with finding somewhere local (even though I'm from Raleigh).

Catering recommendations work as well.

Just send him a restaurant gift card. He'll need food and a reason to get out of the house.

Yeah restaurant cards, meal delivered, etc would be good I'd think. Personally I'd appreciate that more than random basket of fruit and cheese

Good suggestions. I haven't been there in probably a decade and the last place I went was the Spouter Inn, other suggestions?

Sanitary? Actually their food is pretty good from what I remember. Beaufort Grocery Co is also a good place for lunch/brunch. Haven't tried their dinner.

You could always call the funeral home for recommendations. I would assume that they are the authority on this type of thing.

They're the authority on preying on bereavement and bilking you out of way more money than you need, yes.

(I think a honey-baked-ham is a swell idea)

^ agreed, the funeral business is a huge rip-off all around. Just saying that they would probably have a good idea of businesses in the area.

Look, just because you're bereaved doesn't make you a sap!

Honey baked ham ftw

Also Cox Family Restaurant is good home food. Give them a call and see if they would deliver some comfort food.

http://www.southernseason.com specializes in gift basket type stuff. they're located in chapel hill.

as someone who lost 2 grandparents fairly recently, whatever you decide, get something that will keep for a while or can be frozen. we were inundated with food. way wayyy too much food. we couldn't eat it all by any stretch of the imagination, & most of it wasn't something we could freeze. we ended up having to throw out a bunch of stuff. we donated what we could, but that wasn't much.

^this for sure....food that can be frozen or restaurant gift cards....

Also I have had friends take me out to do something fun.....a movie, bowling, sporting event, whatever....just to get away from it all for a while.

but honestly the best thing to do to show that you care is to show up for the receiving/funeral....

^^That. I've had a half dozen older family members pass away in the last few years and we had to throw away a ton of food.

Honestly, skip the food. Place a donation to a charity or something like that. I loved all the food we got, but it was mostly wasted.

Restaurant gift cards don't go bad. Movie gift cards are a good idea too. You want to do something that they can use at their convenience, because chances are they'll be busy.

I think the movie gift cards are a great idea. They can use them whenever & it's great for taking your mind off things you don't want to think about.
