The box has approximately 1.7 cu.ft. of air space as pictured. This is good for up to 2- 10" subs. This can be 10s, 8s, or a single one of the above. The best part of this design in the lack of usable trunk space that it takes up, and functionality. It allows the pass through to be used, and sits in the back of the trunk on a raised portion. There is a 2'' tall step in the back of the maxima trunk.

At this point, I am considering either 2- JL 10w6, or 8w7 subs.
I may do a single of the above as a possibility. Either combo requires about 5-600W RMS, but a single would save money on the amp. I'll probably go with a Alpine PDX or other small footprint amp.

I am looking for other recommendations on the subs. I've considered going with some alpine type-R subs, or the RF Punch P3 shallow 10s. There is also a pretty decent Kenwood Excelon sub. I haven't looked at subs or kept up with them in a while, so I'm not sure what is good anymore.

SQ is key here, with SPL coming in a distant second.

you don't state depth but i'm assuming it's an issue since you've listed shallow subs. i have a shallow depth down-firing box under the rear seat in my truck. i'm running 2 10" image dynamics idq dvc 2ohm subs. i have the voice coils on each sub wired in series and the subs wired together in parallel giving the amp a 2ohm mono load. with this presented load the alpine pdx 600.1 was bench-tested at 633x1 rms. the box they're in is comprised of separate chambers @ .7cu./ft. each. depth was an issue at only 6.25" and box is tuned for 37hz. sq is fantastic but then again the entire cab was covered with cascade audio engineering sound damping and i'm running an alpine mult-eq odyssey processor.

will the subs give the "knock". yes. do i let 'em? no. but it sure is nice to actually hear the 3rd set of low notes on the intro to "bring me to life" by evanescence heard here at 0:29. it's barely audible and extremely muddy on my computer sub.

for the money i was very impressed with my type r8s. sq was much better than my sundownsa8s and they need less than a cube ported each. spl was pretty good too. i'd also recommend trubass ultra 8s they take 400w rms all day and sound awesome hand made by james carol in tn. best 8" for the money imo($90shipped)

I know that section well. I would demo the same song with 2 15'' subs. Also, Moulan Rouge(sp?) elephant love song. Really shows of range and clarity.

I found 2 Alpine 10" type R for $220 that I'm thinking about jumping on.

If I don't like them I should be able to flip them for the same amount or close too it.

Well, I'm going to make the box pictured during the week of xmas, but I decided to do something totally different as well.
I have had these Elemental Design subs sitting around for years. They are 6.5'' DVC 2ohm subs. They have 13mm of linear excursion, and are rated at 200W RMS. I have two of them. At work I picked up a couple of .6" walled cardboard tubes, which I cut down to 36" long. This gives each tube .56 cu.ft. of air space. The ED site says the ideal enclosure for these subs is .5cu.ft tuned to 30hz.

I will make a bracket/face for the front and rear of the tubes to hold the subs in place, and port the opposite end from the sub.

Well, I finished the box tonight. I'll be using 2 10w3 subs off of a JL 500/1. With this amp, I can upgrade the subs later if I choose to.

I used birch ply for most of the box, and stained it to match the wood grain inside the cabin.

Two coats of stain, and 4 coats of clear w/ sanding in between.
I'll probably grab some brown paint to cover up the sealer that is visible.

how are the acoustics of naked wood vs carpet? I imagine a sharper sound?

I don't know for sure which way it would go, but it should be rather similar as far as our ears are concerned. Especially with the orientation of the subs in my setup.

A solid surface will reflect sound. Carpet will absorb sound, but in the 500-3000 Hz range. There will be some affect on the sound, but it will be extremely minimal.

As far as the material, birch ply and MDF are nearly identical in terms of performance (resonance).
