^^we shouldn't have laws confiscating firearms without due process. Maryland managed to execute the very first person they attempted this bullshit gun confiscation law on.

Dtr has a PhD in misunderstanding arguments

But still, on the right track, "don't have laws bc police might kill people" sounds like a police problem rather than a laws problem. That shooting also sounded more justified then most of the police shootings i read about these days. They were in a struggle with an armed man and the armed man's firearm discharged.

It's an example of the practical application of what people in this thread are advocating for. You think the example is dumb because it shits all over what you are advocating for. You can claim it's a cherry picked example, but it's the first example of this type of law being executed and it ended in the manner specified by other sheriffs in the state as to why they were refusing to enforce the law.

Also, the guy had someone beating on his door at 5 in the morning, answered the door with a gun as I would expect many people would at that hour, and had cops tell him they were there to take his guns. The cops claim the gun went off in a struggle and then they shot him. I'd really like to see bodycam footage of what actually happened, because it sounds like bullshit.

[Edited on November 11, 2018 at 6:58 PM. Reason : The problem is politicians, not necessarily police. Other sheriffs are refusing to act on it.]

Answering the door with a gun is weird, paranoid shit. But fine. However the dude put the gun down, and then got mad and picked it up again.

Also, when other people get shot/tasted/beat up the bs answer is always "why didnt they comply". I think it sucks the dude got shot and I'm all for adding regulations to force police to make more efforts to de-escalate in this and tons of other situations.

That said, it's a completely different discussion and really has no impact on the actual law. People get shot over petty bullshit traffic stops all the time, should we eliminate all traffic regulations?

Shooting someone during a traffic stop and shooting someone in their own home are orders of magnitude different.

There's also nothing paranoid about answering your door in the very early hours of the morning with a gun. Lots of home invasions start out that way. There is no good reason for someone to be outside my door beating on it between midnight and 6AM.

+1

While it's nice to see him actually admit a cop might have fucked up, it's only due to his primal dude-with-a-gun urges. Tomorrow he'll be back to defending some idiot cop for shooting a dude holding a butter knife.

[Edited on November 12, 2018 at 9:31 AM. Reason : ^ you actually think the police didn't announce themselves, AND the dude didn't have a peephole or otherwise see a cop car in his driveway?

^^not "orders of magnitude different" to the person getting shot. Someone is either shot with or without justification, I'm not sure why the location matters.

^Sad but predictable. Interesting how they have only confiscated a small fraction of the 6 million firearms. It's almost as if the cops there are not suicidal.

On another note, I have never understood the logic of being anti-cop and pro-gun control. Who do you presume will be enforcing these laws? If you don't trust cops why would you want them to be the only one's with guns?

90% of cops should not have guns. The gun situation could stay the same and I’d still want most cops to be unarmed. T

i was excited when pelosi introduced the bipartisan universal background check bill

feinstein just reintroduced her AWB though, will that tank any potential support for a universal background check bill if it made it to the senate?

3 survivors related to sandy hook have committed suicide, I do wonder how much of this is a cluster effect since the media reported on the first suicide

Media or no, it wouldn't surprise me to learn that survivors and relatives of these sorts of events have higher mortality. Suicide, substance abuse, PTSD, chronic depression, etc.

This man lost his daughter and then spent 6 years being told "Tough shit, have some thoughts-and-prayers™. NRA forever!" from one side and "It's all a lie! False flag! Crisis actor! Deep state!" from the other. That's crushing.

https://www.wral.com/house-expands-domestic-violence-gun-controls-in-rebuke-to-nra/18305448/

Quote :
"The House on Thursday rebuffed a furious lobbying campaign by the National Rifle Association and approved a revamped Violence Against Women Act that would expand law enforcement’s ability to restrict gun purchases by convicted domestic abusers.

The legislation passed easily, 263-158, but the divided vote came on what was once a broadly bipartisan measure first passed in 1994. In recent years, partisan rancor over efforts to expand the protections of the legislation have clouded efforts to renew it, and this year, the divide wase over gun control.

The provisions would close the so-called boyfriend loophole and bar those under a court restraining order or convicted of abusing, assaulting or stalking a domestic partner from purchasing guns. The NRA seized on the new measures and warned Congress they would track and publish how lawmakers voted, hoping to intimidate Republicans and Democrats in Republican-leaning districts.

“Do not let the NRA bully you,” Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Mich., urged her colleagues ahead of the vote, noting that her recently deceased husband, former Rep. John Dingell Jr., D-Mich., was a member of the organization."

I mean, if they're still a danger to society, then they should probably still be in prison or at least a half-way house. This proclamation that everyone that has ever made a mistake is forever treated like a second-class citizen kinda sucks.

I think your loss of gun rights should depend on what you were convicted up, not just whether it was a felony. I think only violent felons should lose their right to self defense, I suppose.

A person loses a loved one to cancer, they spend the rest of their lives fighting to end cancer, they get called a hero. A person loses a loved one to gun violence, they spend the rest of their lives fighting to end gun violence, they get accused of politicizing a tragedy.

https://www.npr.org/2019/05/15/722960414/as-leaks-show-lavish-nra-spending-former-staff-detail-poor-conditions-at-nonprof

Quote :
"A series of internal National Rifle Association documents leaked online over the weekend, detailing lavish six-figure spending on clothing and travel expenses for CEO Wayne LaPierre.

The disclosures prompted board member Allen West to speak out. On Tuesday he announced that he had previously called for LaPierre's resignation, and argued that "it is imperative that the NRA cleans its own house." A second NRA board member followed suit on his Facebook page by writing, "it is time for new management."

These developments, combined with a cascade of stories about other incidents of runaway spending at the gun rights organization, especially rankled former rank-and-file NRA employees.

They told NPR about low wages, pension problems and a culture of fear within the organization that treated ordinary staff very differently than its leadership.

Especially upsetting was the disclosure of these enormous costs despite the fact acknowledged in documents obtained by NPR: that the company has underfunded pensions affecting hundreds of former and current employees — even as LaPierre made $1.4 million in 2017, according to the group's most recent financial disclosures.

The next time that a politician suggests that it's too soon after the most recent mass shooting to discuss gun control, I wish that a reporter would follow up with, "Fair enough, then let's discuss the topic as it relates to the most recent mass shooting that occurred prior to the latest one."

^^My wife said some shit like that (unironically) and as a concealed carry holder, I told her there is no way in hell I'd want to shoot it out with my .38 handgun against a guy rocking an AK-47. I'd have fucking ran and if I couldn't I'd hide and have my gun ready as a last resort. I'm not some damn cowboy and I'd like to think most others aren't either. Shooting down long Wal-Mart corridors with a five round pistol versus a guy with a rifle and God knows how many clips is a good way to get dead.

Maybe open carry of assault rifles could have prevented this?

By your logic, the cops would all get in their cars and drive home whenever a shootout occurred.

Nah. Just shoot him when he's shooting somewhere else. Remember, he's got to focus on everyone in the room, you just need to focus on him. Just wait in cover until he's shooting at the innocent, then step out and empty your gun at him. Be the hero.

Carrying a handgun around with you on a daily basis is hard, you only do it if something is already wrong with your ability to do math. Therefore, such a person is rather likely to risk their life in such a way.

American gun culture is right wing, reactionary, and counterrevolutionary.

It's not about providing a check on a tyrannical government. It never has been. It's not about personal protection, either.

No.

It's about securing and maintaining white dominance over the population. It's about preserving the American white colonial project both domestically and abroad. It's about providing the legal justification and legal framework of gun ownership that both supports the ruling class and entrenched white majorities while feeding xenophobic bigotry to the rubes (and law enforcement) who are willing to carry out the terrorizing of non whites. This open projection of violence against minorities is not coincidental. It is a necessary step that must be carried out if the overall goal is to create a permanently marginalized underclass.

Civilian gun ownership is not a threat to a racist or apartheid state. It is the very apparatus that protects it.
