Wow, is TWW full of atheist's or something?!

Glad people can hate on religion, but then find it offensive when someone is outward emotional about their religious beliefs. Sad people.

atheist's what?

It's not about hating on religion at all. Even as a religious person, the notion of attributing success in an athletic competition to God is ridiculous.

It's as if God is some kid playing a game with action figures and arbitrarily deciding which side he wants to win. If one believes in God, I'd wager one does not imagine him in that way.

Or maybe God determines the victor by.. who prays the hardest? If that's the case then we should be able to data mine sports victories by the religious makeup of the teams. We shouldn't see any instances where a team with more christians than the other lost, right? No atheist tennis player should be able to defeat a christian tennis player right? If God decides the victor, surely he isn't going to grant victory to the guy who doesn't even believe in him, right?

Christians have a lot of explanations for why God allows bad things to happen to good people. So, it seems a bit contradictory for God to help a football player score a touchdown while allowing ISIS to behead christians in the middle east.

If God is out there determining victories, then that also speaks to the lack of agency that the players themselves have in the outcome of the game. Why bother practicing free throws when praying a little harder seems like the more rational action--assuming that currying favor with God is the path to victory. And if we have no agency in a baseball game, what agency do we have in life? If we have no free will, then fuck it-- why bother doing anything at all?

Or perhaps, the all powerful, omniscient, creator of all that exists doesn't actually give a flying shit about the petty games humans play, and teams win for all of the reasons that teams win. They executed better. the other team made too many errors. a key player had an injury. The tarheels cheated, etc.

While some players in some sports do fall into the category of truly believing that God intervened on their behalf-- which is, by the way, another way of saying one believes that God favors him above others, I suspect the vast majority of players do it as a misguided attempt to appear publicly humble.

At the end of the day, most of the attributions and quotables from players thanking God for their performance or victory are one of the silly logical fallacies that humans are susceptible to and are no different than other non-religious superstitions that athletes have-- mostly harmless. Where it crosses the line from harmless bullshit to pissing people off is when players go from thanking God to segueing into a political podium.

That's why Tim Tebow got so much shit-- not because he was christian, but because he had an agenda. Philip Rivers is a counterpoint-- another super religious guy who tends to not use his celebrity status as a forum for evanglism or political activism. He has historically not gotten any significant flak as a devout Christian although his devotion is no secret.

LOL Said the book of Job never. wagering with the devil on a man's life

God actually does take sides. asked the religious on how God works things out for their benefit. So who am I to say on what God does or doesn't do. Especially on a God that seems to morph at the attitude of the believing people. God had to be on Russell's side with that miracle he pulled out after that crappy game he had. The kicker had more points than he did before overtime. God smiled on him greatly. If you keep the faith then God comes thru. Amirite?

I bet if Russell was Islamic and quoted a passive verse in the Qur'an then EVERYONE would be flipping their lid.

^Why would he have audibled if the call was to take advantage of the defense? It's not like the defense did anything pre-snap that would have made that play less desirable than it already was. He could have called a timeout to tell Pete that he's a fucking moron and that it's a horrible play call, but then he would have wasted the last timeout.

Probably could have not made the pass, but it wasn't a horrible pass...dude just made a big time play. WR could have at least gotten a hand on the ball.
