I generally agree with your sentiment, but RW was a bit of a prick in how he handled himself at the end of his time at NC State. The way he tried to throw TOB under the bus and act like everything that was going on was solely TOB's doing was unprofessional and turned me off to him a bit, especially since it was plain to see what RW was actually doing, namely trying to get to a better tream. Just sayin

treetwista is the only asu type fan here. only reason to hate on rw is if you still like a failed piece of shit coach that no longer has any relation to nc state nor had any relation to us prior to coming here

Russell is a NCSU graduate. The only NCSU grad we have disowned is John Edwards

so if russ had some made up bullshit excuse it'd be ok that TOB kicked one of the better players in NCSU history off the team?

he didnt kick him off the team

and moving to be close to an ill relative is a valid excuse

a 'bullshit excuse' is wanting to skip spring practice again so you can hit .170 in single A

there's a difference between transferring and going off to grad school.

Wilson graduated in his 4 years at NC State (redshirting during his freshman year) and then went to another school for his graduate studies and final year of eligibility. It doesn't matter what path he took to reach his professional goals, he'll always be a State grad

Why is everyone having so much trouble with this?

The guy freaking dominated his entire career. When he tried to play his senior year the coach said he couldn't play. How in the fuck can anyone justify disliking Wilson because he was forced to transfer in order to play?

He wanted to make the NFL. Not playing wasn't going to help him. Stop being such trolling idiots about this. It's really fucking old.

there has been nothing greater than watching wilson fail in the most painful ways on the biggest stages.

2 hail mary's in the regular season
time running out at the rose bowl
the atlanta 30 second drive

it's like god didn't think his abortion of a baseball career was NC State shit enough for him and said, I'mm let you be good at football again, but it's still gonna suck when it comes down to it

If by "fail" you mean "not win a Super Bowl" then sure. But in that case only 3% of nfl players succeed in any given year.

If you mean anything else by fail then you are clearly insane. He played fantastic on a big stage every time he has played on one in the nfl.

Yeah that's why I said only 3% of the nfl isn't a failure at the end of the season, because everyone who doesn't win The Super Bowl either loses their last game (failure), doesnt make the playoffs at all (failure), or both (double dog failure!)

I'd love to see posts if someone can dig them out on these douches talking crap about Russell while he was kicking ass setting records and taking names while at NCSU. He graduated. Started his graduate degree here and is almost done with it at Wisconsin. I love when people who have never met Russ once get on here and act like they know the whole story. It was BOTH his and Tom's fault. Neither is here anymore, however one is an alum and will always have that connection, the other is a former coach who has also coached many other places. Do the math trolls.

being a ncsu intern in the Murphy Center I can tell you...it was both, but either way...when you are a coach and you have that type of player....you keep him. You don't keep a guy (aka Mike) because you need him for the next season bc you didn't recruit squat. That was the silence in that building. Noone had the balls to be like um....a QB might need to be recruited O B in the next 3 years buddy. Now he is gone as am I and I say what I want....there ya go TT.

i think most rational people agree that RW wanted to try his hand at baseball and put TOB in a tricky situation...while i'm sure TOB and all of us would've loved a 4th season of RW, TOB made the decision that was best for the stability of the program given RW's preference to continue baseball rather than commit to our football team for spring practice, while giving him the option to compete and try and take over Glennon's starting position...like you said, they were both at fault, and i only wish the national outlets who reported the story knew some of those details

but then you have a few people on here who want to act like RW was like "well i'd like to play my senior year here coach obrien" and TOB was like "no fuck you, i'm kicking you off the team because glennon is better" which is not even close to the truth

^ was that this year? To be honest my favorite bowl win lately was the one he led us to over West Virginia. Just bc I got to travel and it was fun, we beat a good team, etc. Cold as hell. I feel when I watch him it's like watching him play here...but with a shit load more talent.

Quote :

Wasn't he under contract with the Colorado Rockies at the time though? So, it was more than just a "preference", he was contractually obligated to play baseball during the same time that spring practice was going on.

he voided that contract when he went to play at Wisconsin

based on his contract he technically was never supposed to play college ball again, in which case you can't blame TOB for preparing for the possibility that he would actually honor that contract and moving on with the football program he was running

and TOB even said that he would welcome him back in the fall! but that he had to compete for the starting job that he was handing over to Glennon, since he assumed RW would be embarking on his MLB career

[Edited on January 14, 2013 at 1:54 AM. Reason : i dont get all the "TOB kicked him off the team" rhetoric]

NO

TOB told him he would not be able to compete for a starting position unless he practiced in the Spring, something he had never made Russell do.

of course he voided it before going to Wisconsin, but prior to spring training he was still under contract and still pursuing the possibility of a future in baseball. i would've done the same thing given his uncertainty of playing football at the next level.

^^he told him if he missed spring practice Glennon would be the starter, so you're partially right

he never said RW wouldn't have a chance at earning the starting job in fall practice or becoming the starter early in the season as soon as Glennon fucked up a few times

i'm just trying to disspell the myth that people like face propagate that "TOB kicked him off the team" which is patently false...if TOB really wanted to be a dick, he would've stuck with Glennon and not allowed RW a release from his scholarship, forcing him to play baseball

^yup, but he was still under contract with the Rockies...hell, he was under contract with the Rockies when he declared for the NFL draft last year

Now the real question is, how'd Coach Avent feel about Russell missing fall practice and much of the early season games in baseball

Here's an interesting quote to add to the baseball side from the scouting supervisor of the Rockies, Jay Matthews
Quote :
"We gave it our best shot. We gave him the chance to play the two sports. We gave him an opportunity to play football. He had to pay back a portion of the signing bonus, but his commitment to the Rockies is all taken care of.

Ok you want another fail? The sack at the end of the first half was all...ALL...on Russell and in the end cost his team the game. But you won't hear that on here. Instead it's "woe is Russell if only his coaches didn't screw everything up"

Typical nc state shit. Blame everyone else.

And LOL at that ^^. Alex Rodriguez wishes baseball skill was judged by a good month in th middle of the summer.

The real question is can Wilson be top 5 next year. This year it was:

Brady
Manning
Brees
Rodgers
Ryan

So, that's definitely doable. Russell already outplayed Ryan last night, and Ryan had much better receivers and a functioning running game. Griffin will be injured. Luck just isn't as good. Newton is on the panthers. Don't know if the chargers can be fixed so quickly. The former golden god doesn't even have a team. Glennon will be a rookie.

Nope. Sweezy didn't block his guy at all and the defender was on Wilson as soon as the ball was snapped. I rewound the tape and watched it several times.

--

Word on the street now that TOB is gone is that when he came here to NCSU, he straight up said that Wilson would never play QB for him, maybe safety. RW, of course, responded and said that he would win the spot in competition and of course did.
