I think any major program assistant would have to be high to take the NW job. It is pure downside unless you can overcome immense odds. Without making the NCAA's, you're destined to kick around mid majors after your window closes.

if you just want to get paid for a while it's not bad

plus if you make the tournament just once you're a god

now that I think about it it's the perfect job for herb

as hot as the chicks are at UCLA, and as dominant a program as they were before all of us were born, isn't there some kind of element of unrealistic expectations that any of their coaches will face?

i mean, state fans know duke and unc are great, and to some extent, we're content with splitting the season series and making the tourney

ucla is firing a guy with multiple final-4s

howland's firing has a bit more to it than that. the inmates run the asylum (see: the article last season that slaughtered him), all the alumni hate his playstyle and he cheated his ass off this year only to get blown out in round 1

it's also been five years since he did anything

[Edited on March 24, 2013 at 1:46 AM. Reason : pretty sure bill walton would murder him if he could lure him into a back alley]

and they won the pac 12 this year too

The NCAA commentating crew was giving it hard to the fans and media for basically fulfilling the firing prophecy with their swirling rumors. Then they told UCLA to quit living in the past, you'll never be a dynasty again.

I wish he had quit on his own, amid fan angst, so that for the next 5 years, haters of the program could claim they fired him

Smart is supposedly the first choice, I could see him going there

I don't see Stevens leaving Butler for there, but I'm just guessing

Wright might want to go to a more stable conference but I don't see him getting a realistic look

Then I'd guess there are 5-10 other candidates they'd talk to before Gott

I mean, some random Alabama fan from 2009 knows he doesn't like defense, so why would UCLA hire him when they're not satisfied with a bunch of Final Fours...because he used to be an assistant there? Why not get Lorenzo Romar? He had a one-and-done in the postseason this year too, and he's already on the west coast!

they are not firing howland for performance. they just need a guy that can recruit you don't really need to know how to coach at ucla if you can recruit.

" “I was really disappointed,” said LaVine. “I had a good relationship with him and his staff. They know my game and I was really looking forward to going in there and helping them. I wish them the best. It’s tough because I want to stay at UCLA; I really didn’t have a second choice in my recruitment. We’ll just have to see what happens. I’ll have to see who they hire.”

When asked if there are any other schools he would consider other than UCLA, LaVine replied, “As of right now probably Washington,” said LaVine. “I have a great relationship with Coach Romar and his staff.”

We asked LaVine if he has any coaches in mind that he would like to see at UCLA.

“I only really know the coaches that recruited me,” said LaVine. “I heard Coach Romar is on their list and I also have a really good relationship with Coach Few. Those coaches know my game and what I can do.” "

coaching is important until you get a certain level of talent. kentucky 12 talent and it doesn't really matter who the coach is.

kentucky 12 talent doesn't happen very often

it pretty much never happens

if the only thing that matters is a certain level of talent, State would've done better this year

neither of your claims contradict my point but I'll go ahead and refut them anywya. We won a bunch of games and made the tournament because we had more talent than all but 2 teams we played all year and the mavs had more talent than the heat that year

I said that talent is all that matters once you have a certain level meaning once you have a certain amount of talent difference from the other team, its pretty hard to lose.

[Edited on March 25, 2013 at 2:34 AM. Reason : heat had 3 players (are worlds better now) and dallas had stacks on deck]

^^^Kentucky 12 doesn't happen often? Their class next year is possibly the best recruiting class in college history. They have the No. 1 PG, No. 1 SG, No. 1 PF, No. 1 C, another guy in the top 10 overall, and another in the top 20 overall.

Of course it remains to be seen, but that's fucking sick.

and one of the reasons people are so high on UK's recruiting class next year is because its almost unprecedented

people are saying its better than Michigan's Fab 5, ie, it rarely happens

That'd force Duke to hire one of their shitty minions like Chrissy or Dawkins.
