I need some help from my friends at TWW on which job to take!

Job A: Work as an electrical controls design engineer for a hydro-electric company.

Pros: stay in Charlotte, 30% domestic travel across the country, more the type of engineering I want to do, will be near UNCC in case i want to pursue my grad degree

Cons: Contract-to-hire position, paying 6k less than job B

Job B: Work as a process engineer to bring up a new High Voltage cable factory in Charleston

Pros: Spend 3 months training at the European facility, Move to Charleston, Higher pay than job A.

Cons: Was hoping to get out of manufacturing, having to move.

Job A, don't do a job you don't really want to do

First of all, congrats on being able to move on so quickly from getting fired from your last job.

Second, it depends on your main objective. It sounds like you would enjoy Job A better, which should make it easily worth the $6k salary cut. As far as the contract-to-hire part, a lot of companies are doing that these days. I wouldn't let it bother me, unless you think you will fuck up within the contract period.

Get a quarter.
Heads = Job A.
Tails = Job B.
Flip the quarter.

Now once it's in the air, you'll realize which side you hope it lands on. Catch the quarter, don't look at it, put it in your pocket, and go with whatever side you hoped it would land on.

Having to move will have enough costs associated with it (depending on if and how much they pay for relocation expenses) to eat into a chunk of that $6k difference. I don't think $6k is enough to outweigh the job happiness and location components. I say that as I am currently pondering the possibility of being offered a job that could be a 20-25% decrease in salary but at what is basically the #1 place I wan to work at in the city I want to live in.

^^ I always liked that method.

In my opinion...Option B is a no brainer for the three main reasons...Charleston, train in Europe for 3 months, and higher pay. I mean...FUCK YES to all three of those.

What kind of grad degree would you possibly get in the future? Citadel (in Charleston of course) has a decent MBA program.

Job A counter-offered just now as they were concerned about me taking Job B offered to increase my hourly pay by an amount that would be a $10K (annualized) premium over Job B or $5K over the contract. Although would still pay my own benefits.

With option to go full time in 6 months at the original salary price but at this point would also get full benefits.

^ yeah, for you maybe. But dude wants to stay in Charlotte.

I know I wouldn't take a job that required me to relocate, unless it was for life-changing money.

I would have a hard time relocating with my job, would have to start over. Would be easier to change careers if I had to relocate outside of NC.

My wife's company tried to get her to move to Chicago last year, she said no, they promoted her to VP of Sales and told her to hire two people to work under her in Chicago so I guess we are pretty set in Raleigh.

So took Job A.

Honestly feel like i'm missing out on the opportunity to train in Europe and live in Charleston. Ultimately though I felt Job A was more in align with my career aspirations. Plus the contract-hire situation is going to let me clean house with overtime in the short term with the opportunity to not sign on after 6 months and go directly back to grad school (was my original plan before being let go by Corning) if I don't like the position.

What's your female situation like? If you're single...bad decision. You'd be eyes deep in vagina down here...scantily clad 90% of the year.

I would have recommended Job B. At your age, 3 months on the company dime in Europe would be amazing.

Hence why moving to Charleston seemed enticing!
