it is not unreasonable to think he lied about meeting her to avoid the embarassment of telling the national media that one of the nations most recognized star football players has an internet girlfriend.

The only thing that makes me think he might not have been in on it is that he went to his coaches about it after getting a call from his "dead" "girlfriend" on Dec. 26th. So I'm thinking he did get catfished and he made it worse by claiming to have met her, talked with her on the phone for hours, etc. in an effort to legitimize the strictly online relationship.

the twitter account was a beard account because Te'o is gay. They fake killed the girl because eventually people are going to want to meet her. i don't get why people would think this is a cover-up for him being gay. there are a million different ways to hide being gay that are better and less risky than this, including but not limited to having a fake girlfriend at your own school, or just staying single.

I think it was either: A.) A Gay cover up or B.) He actually got duped by his "friend" and claimed he met her and knew her as a lie...just to make it more real to himself and to sound more believable.

It will all depend on what becomes of his friend that apparently created the accounts.

Although this Cardinals FB throws a HUGE wrench into the mix. Hopefully he just has his names mixed up because that picture does not belong to that "girl."

If he wanted to hide being gay, this would probably be the most obvious and first thing they would think of and a regular person could have kept it going possibly indefinitely but he's too much in the spotlight

Made some shit up in a ploy for attention and preyed on people's sympathy, meaning he's basically a classic sociopath.

Made some shit up to hide something about his sexuality.

Got duped in what has to be one of the most elaborate and inexplicable internet girlfriend hoaxes ever.

The fact that he's so high profile and made her fake death very public and was a big part of his appeal as a sports story is why people care.

I don't think there's much reason to suspect that this has anything to do with being gay. He was well known to be involved with other girls at Notre Dame throughout that time, so he certainly didn't need this weird long distance relationship to make him seem straight.
