what is this? Channel/network?

Edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Americans_(2013_TV_series) http://vod.fxnetworks.com/watch/theamericans

It's on FX. KGB Agents impersonate Americans to become sleeper agents.

Grantland loved it. All the endorsement I need. No spoilers really, just a review.

It looked pretty fucking good, and FX has been damn near can't miss the last few years. They're like the AMC of non-dramas.

Eh. I used to be a fan of Andy Greenwald and the other guy but they are so fucking pretentious talking about Homeland and Walking Dead. I much prefer Firewall and Iceberg/Hitfix for my tv reviews.

That said, Charm School is one of my favorite books and this seems to channel that pretty well. I'll probably watch this at some point.

Episode one was pretty good. I like the guy who plays "Phillip" but I can't place what else he's been in.

^ In a show called Brothers & Sisters per a review I read.

Good show. I do like the subtle humor where you can tell the Russian in them coming out, mostly done in the conversations with their kids. Like their son talking about being wowed by the astronaut that talked to them and reached the moon, and then his mom says "you know, the moon is just one thing, it's a great accomplishment just to go into space".

Maybe it is me but he looks a lot like James McAvoy:

Also, this is set in 1981 right? Their clothes/hairstyles/furniture/etc. don't seem to correspond with that. When I look at pictures of my parents and me from the early 80s (I was born in 83), it is OBVIOUS that it is just a completely different time. We're talking like brown corduroy furniture with orange/mustard/olive trim, shoulder pads on women's clothes, big hair on everyone, mustaches and sideburns all over the damn place. Even the business suits back then had giant lapels and way too much fabric in general. It seems that all they really did to reinforce the fashion and style of the early 80s was give him tall socks when he was running.

^i understand that complaint, but honestly if they were to make it true to the times it would be way too distracting. the 80's were hokey as shit so i don't mind if they keep the costuming somewhat neutral.

you could tell they tried to give a nod to the 80s early on in the episode. the very first scene at home Felicity is wearing high rise, stone washed Guess jeans. but in one of the next scenes outside they had her in more flattering low rise modern day pants. Didn't take me out of the story at all.

^Yeah I noticed those jeans and though "hah, mother jeans".

No, it isn't really too distracting from the story I just figured they'd try and be a little bit more authentic. They just better not start showing up with flat screen TV's and stuff. I would like to see some calculator watches though.

yeah I'd like to see more 80's specific styling but the storyline definitely made up for it.

what i like about this show is how all this could've actually happened IRL. i know we had spies and they had spies, etc etc but what the show is about could've really went down. mind-boggling.

For anyone who hasn't read it - check out Charm School by Nelson Demille. Tells a similar story.

shit, i would bet this show has some "real-life" situations written into it. the series creator, Joe Weisberg, worked for the CIA

I loved the scene after they dumped the body ... that shit was kind of cold to me. it was a very dynamic display of Elizabeth and Philip's relationship paired with the scene close to the ending where Elizabeth opened up about her former life.

i also love how the woman is the hard-nosed professional and the man is the emotional one in the relationship.

so much to like from the pilot. i just hope it keeps pace and doesnt turn into a pile of shit. i think this could be a special show.

The second episode was really strong as well...definitely more self-contained than the pilot but that's to be expected. This show is as tense as Breaking Bad right out of the gate. And Matthew Rhys is fucking killing it as Phillip, I don't know that I've seen him in much before but he's a revelation.
