"Bill aims to cover up topless rallies"

Quote :
"Specifically, the bill adds to the definition of "private parts" that may not be shown in public the "nipple, or any portion of the areola, of the human female breast."

For the record, I'm all for letting women go topless anywhere men can go topless.

^In all fairness, this was a priority to get done on their 2nd day in session, I mean the annual rally in August is right around the corner!

At least they did it during a regular session, rather than calling a special session that costs 10s of thousands of dollars a day to run to double ban gay marriage like they did last time.

They're working on an anti-tanning bill too:

http://www.wral.com/youthful-glow-to-fade-under-proposed-tanning-bed-rules/12050076/

Quote :
"House Bill 18 would bar anyone younger than 18 from using a tanning bed unless they first obtained a physician's prescription. Parental consent wouldn't even be enough to allow a youth to tan, if the proposal is approved."

It may or may not be a good idea, but it's also a step in the direction of behavior regulation on their 2nd day back.

Wait, I'm lost. Are these Republicans gayer than AIDS (anti boob), aids to the gays (stubbornly committing long-term political hari-kari), or anti-gay?

^^ Exactly. We don't need to make everything that's a bad idea illegal.

you liberals make me laugh, you want to dictate every facet of my fucking life from wearing a seatbelt, healthcare, firearms...the list goes on, and on, and on.

then, when a conservative proposes a bill making it illegal to SHOW YOUR TITS IN PUBLIC you want to whine like the republicans and evil pat mccrory are the only ones wanting to tell people how to do things.

Wearing a seat belt and healthcare aren't liberal things, and nothing so far has been done to your firearms (obama has loosened restrictions and heralded windfalls for the gun companies).

Meanwhile, republicans are passing constitutional amendments to enshrine religious based restrictions on people's personal lives, and pass laws to subtly (or not so subtly) further push a religious-based agenda on nannying people.

Oh wait:

Quote :
"On July 11, 1984, then U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elizabeth Dole issued the occupant crash protection Standard 208, which aimed to reduce fatalities through enactment of seat belt laws or the introduction of passive restraints such as air bags. "

these points are irrelevant, because you are making them as if this bill will only appeal to republicans. wearing a seatbelt is a bill supported by members of both parties, as i'm sure this bill will be, too. i lean heavily libertarian. i am well-aware that the republican party as a whole has lost all sight of what being a traditional conservative even means. but to single out just the republicans as having an agenda of "nannying people"? right.

Nixon and Gingrich (and he broader GOP) were big proponents of healthcare reform. It wasn't until Obama that republicans became very anti healthcare, and even then, their revisions served to make the bill more corporatist, their concerns were never on promoting liberty (and you could easily argue having healthcare promotes risk taking an enhances life rather than restricting people).

Yea, wondering if that means mixed feelings about the bill affecting breastfeeding in public, or mixed feelings on women breastfeeding in public in general.

This law specifically exempts breastfeeding, so it has no bearing on it. If you have an issue with women breastfeeding in public, then deal with that on your own.

More to the point, why do you think your opinion should carry any weight on what other people should or should not be allowed to do?

This is the primary problem with America today. Everybody thinks that their opinion and their feelings should be fucking sacrosanct and codified into laws. Most people have fucking idiotic opinions and are generally poorly informed. I include myself in this group, the major difference being that I don't think it's a good idea to use political power and the powers of the state to limit other people's liberty unless it's absolutely necessary to protect my own rights.

Even worse is when they have children, christ I'm about to vomit, we need to outlaw such perverse decadence from our society and bar them from marrying.

i'm just seeing your question that you edited in later, so don't get all uppity like you stumped me or something.

i say "hack", because if you weren't so biased, you'd realize that it is completely hypocritical for a conservative republican, who are supposed to believe that government shouldn't interfere in citizens' personal lives, propose a bill supporting the governments involvement in people's personal lives, and then you go on a straw-man rant against liberals to somehow defend this anti-arealoa bill proposed by republicans. I call you a hack because you seem to support the conservative "team", and oppose the liberal "team", even if it means being a illogical hypocrite.

Quote :
"And make sure you have to show photo proof to drive, buy a gun, alcohol, or cigarettes. But don't think for a second you should have to do the same when your going to fucking vote."

Fair point, but the usual "democrat" response to voter id laws is that they are a solution to a problem that doesn't exist and serve only to disenfranchise people that would likely vote for them. (a claim which has been substantiated by Republicans themselves) Maybe you could address that point instead of whatever insanity you're cooking up here.

Quote :
"And fuck whatever you want, man, woman, animal, that is all cool too."

Again, what planet are you from? How can you ascribe pro-bestiality to "democrats"? Also, do you think the government should be arbitrating with whom you have sex?

Quote :

My point is, both sides stick their nose into places in our lives that neither belong. Neither party can claim to truly be the party of smaller government. The Republicans want to legislate morality and the Democrats want to legislate social equality. Neither are things that government should exist for, in my opinion.

^^^your reading comprehension needs help... severely.

Quote :
"i say "hack", because if you weren't so biased, you'd realize that it is completely hypocritical for a conservative republican..."

i've said numerous times, even in this thread, that i identify stronger with libertarianism than mainstream republicans. i also never defended the bill outright.

of course, i've already been through my thoughts on the matter, but you were obviously in too much of a hurry to call me names than read the rest of my commentary. the point is not that republicans these days want to mind their own business. rather, i was commenting on the liberal attitude in this thread, which is accusing conservatives of making rules to tell people what to do, how to do it, and what is morally right and wrong, as if the other side doesn't try to dictate these matters themselves. whether i'm a republican myself or not, accusing them of trying to form their own "nanny state" is about as laughable as it gets, assuming the accuser is liberal.

sorry for everyone that had to read my opinion twice, bullet just needs an extra push sometimes.

^^Well, my point was that a good chunk of things you were attributing to the "side" of Democrat were flat out unsubstantiated. Also, I think the government should exist for equality since businesses/local governments/state governments have historically and repeatedly demonstrated that they will happily discriminate. If the government isn't for the betterment of its constituents, then what is it for?

^^Democrats support gay marriage and abortion. Animals may have been hyperbole, but the point was still valid. The LGBT community is firmly on the left side of the aisle and wants to have all of the same rights as others. As somebody who doesn't really give a shit either way, I don't care.

Smoking. Well the President did sign the Family Smoking Prevention & Control Act which allows the FDA to regulate the tobacco industry. More government control and intrusion. Not saying its right or not (I don't smoke and hate smoking honestly) but the Democrat president and Democrats in Congress were the sponsors of it.

The nudity was pointing to the people crying about the Republicans putting this bill forward. Most of the ones against it are very liberal/progressive/Democrat.

Seatbelts are required for the good of the people. It is now primary enforcement in many states. I wear mine every time I get in the car and require all of my passengers to do so as well. That said, is it the right of government to require this, and ticket people if they do not?

Safe sex, I don't disagree with you either. Again my point though, we have two extremes. Everything is okay, and nothing is okay. And the government should be there to enforce all of it for either side. Ugh.

Not suprisngly, I heard there's a protest in Carrboro over this bill tonight.

Quote :
"Our newly elected governor and state legislature is hard at work."

Quote :
"House Bill 34, filed last Thursday, would make it illegal for women to bare their breasts in public anywhere in North Carolina. The bill was filed by two Republican representatives: Rep. Rayne Brown and Rep. Tim Moffitt.

My first question for Representatives Brown and Moffit is: how does your proposed breast bill square with your distaste for so called "big government"? Local communities all across our great state should be permitted to set their own standards when it comes to regulating public decency and indecency."

Quote :
"My second question for these representatives is: why would you start your terms by tabling legislation that is an affront to the First Amendment? Representatives Brown and Moffit claim to zealously advocate for the US Constitution, and yet this bill creates a slippery slope because it could easily be interpreted in an overly broad manner by police, prosecutors, or others who are tasked with enforcement.

There is a wide range of artistic expression and creative work that traditionally may include glimpses of the human form, including the female breast. For example, North Carolina should be proud of our long legacy of nurturing the performing arts, including dance, dramatic arts, and filmmaking. If a dramatic work or dance is being performed in "public" at an outdoor festival, must the local officials arrest a performer whose costume allows a glimpse of breasts. If a film or TV production is being shot by a Wilmington studio in a public location, will this law be rigidly applied?"

Quote :
"Finally, my last question for these representatives is: don't you have anything better to do with your time and your legislative power? You were elected by your constituency to solve real problems, and there is no shortage of genuine crises facing our state. "
