I was in a hurry once and pissed at all the slow people in the left lane and just left my high beams on. Surprisingly most people got out of my way pretty quick. Not recommended unless you feel like being an asshole.

Only in extreme cases with the most oblivious drivers, I'll also put on my left turn signal

^ haha, hardly anyone in America knows what the signal means...particularly the oblivious ones in the left lane to begin with...and also particularly with all the oblivious people who don't signal and/or signal the wrong way and/or forget to cancel their signal.

^^ haha, I am not even the slightest bit concerned with not being an asshole to people blocking the left lane without using it to pass. Fuck 'em.

^ by the way, what marks an "extreme case" or a "most oblivious driver"? The great majority of people on the road are very likely to be found blocking the left lane, generally not even knowing they're fucked up, and I think many times not even noticing that anyone is behind them. If they already aren't responding to you waiting behind them in the passing lane, and then tailgating them if they still don't move, how much more oblivious can they get? You can flash lights, too, and they still don't move. They aren't a rarity; they're the norm, and 99% of them aren't any more of an "extreme case" than the next. They're probably the same motherless fucks who don't pull out into an intersection to turn left, and then wait, mouth agape, for a half-mile long break in traffic before turning left.

I got sucked into an argument on a local forum about flashing lights. I say its rude, regardless of situation. Some said it was normal procedure.

It is normal procedure everywhere else in the world. Here, it's taken as rude. I say "Fuck it, good, it's 1% as rude as impeding the fuck out the flow of traffic for everyone on the road; they deserve it, I'd be a shitload ruder than that to them if I could get away with it."

i swear to god, once i get rich, i'm gonna rent billboards around town for "THE LEFT LANE IS FOR PASSING ONLY"

and "IF YOU ARE IN THE LEFT LANE AND AREN'T PASSING SOMEONE, YOU ARE WRONG."

^I think I could understand it being normal if someone was just simply hogging the left lane.

However, the several times I've been flashed it has been from some asshole tailgater trying to pass me (when I'm trying to pass other cars using the left lane).

it's pretty normal all the time in other countries...not really a rude thing. hell, they'll blow the horn at you in some places, too. it isn't nearly as big of a deal as it is here...and I have never seen a country that drives as slowly and conservatively as we collectively do in America.

...but no, I never tailgate anyone in the right lane, or in the left lane if they are are passing, regardless of speed...or hell, even in the left lane at all until I have been behind them, with them not passing, and not making any effort to get out of the way. Then I have no compassion for them whatsoever. They should be walking or riding a bus or something.

Yeah, if your just driving in the left lane slowly to be a dick...fuck that.

Or if your on my ass flashing your lights flipping me off when I'm trying to pass traffic myself...fuck that.

yeah, it has nothing to do with how fast you're going. You could be below the speed limit but passing people, and I will patiently wait for you. You could be going 20-over and not passing, and I will be on your ass if I want to go faster.

It's actually taught in drivers Ed in a couple states. It's supposed to be a reminder more than an asshole thing. Keep in mind usually both people are breaking the law (speeding and remaining in the fast lane). But still... Get the fuck over if you aren't over taking, if you don't you are the asshole not the guy trying to get by. Now, flash your lights at me when I am over taking someone... And my blood will boil.

I flash high beams and honk. If you're cruising in the left lane you suck as a human being.

I'm pretty patient, but since I don't tailgate sometimes they might not realize that car 2-3 seconds behind them is trying to pass them. I'll give it a long time, if they are still oblivious after multiple opportunities to merge right I consider that an extreme case. I haaate having to pass someone on the right, I'll wait a good amount of time for them to figure it out so I don't have to pass through anyone's blind spot on the right.

If I do have to pass them on the right I glare at them when I go by

Has nothing to do with superiority, it's about efficient and safe traffic movement

Not rude. It's what you're supposed to do. You've also got the option of honking. Seriously.

dude tonight was in the right lane, and we had people coming off the on ramp - ass hole sped up to get in front of my in the left lane...(i was doing 75+) he slows the fuck down to 68. Makes it impossible for me to pass her as the others flying up 80+ to pass go into the right lane.

I'm like wtf.

Then I see it's a girl and as we get into town she goes to starbucks, I roll my window down and say you're a dumb fuck. I think it really made a difference.

I doubt it affected her, but it does seem to have an effect on the elderly.

You know, since they all drive like shit. Follow them into a parking lot under similar circumstances and tell them you hope they fucking die.

They look at you like you've hastened the end times.

I love the ones that are just coming onto the interstate and proceed to change 4 lanes at once and plant themselves in the far left lane going slower than everyone else.

if you are in the left lane and no one is in front of you, I'll flash at you and give you a sec to get out the fucking way

then usually just pass you on the right

if someone is in front of you, no, I won't flash

I don't consider it rude if someone flashes their lights at me asking me to get over. Of course, I'm never in that situation in the first place b/c I'm not some dumb shit inconsiderate driver. But if I was, and someone flashed at me I would feel embarrassed (for being a dumbshit inconsiderate driver) and get over. Same thing if someone gives me a quick horn honk at a light if I'm not paying attention.

Personally I don't flash my lights often, as I've found that people just get pissed off at you and give you the finger. But I occasionally will.

Meh, it's more rude to be going slower than the traffic in your lane. I've always flicked my lights.

I generally try not to be an ass and end up with someone trying to pass me (stay out of left lane or two), though sometimes I forget.

the only time I don't get over is when I recently passed someone and now they decide to speed up. shoulda figured out your travel speed already brah.

People who don't use cruise control on the interstate drive me fucking nuts. Set your cruise, stay in the right lane. If you come upon someone traveling slower, you pass on the left. If you have to you hammer down and pass them quickly and then get back over to the right and resume your previous speed.

It's not difficult, I don't know why people make interstate driving harder than it needs to be.

I do more passing on the right than light flashing. I would love to take the time to properly aggravate left lane bandits, but there are so many of them it's just damn pointless. But yeah, if they're driving right beside another rig for a mile or more and I can't get around them on the right I'll start with the flashing after about a mile.

Seems to work most of the time, I think a lot of people freak out and just get out of the way. Usually it's accompanied by tailgating though...
