You play Edward Kenway, father of Haytham Kenway and grandfather of Connor. A british pirate in the first half of the 18th century.

It will have a sea based overworld, with 50 Caribbean islands all on the same map with no loading zones in between, and you can sail your ship to any of them or even swim from one to the other if you really wanted to.

I never got around to playing 3, should I get it cheap and play it or just get 4?

Is there any real advancement of the Desmond story in 3? I was really hoping they'd make him the main character and have it set in modern times by now.

For anyone eyeing this on the PC, GreenMan Gaming has a 25% off voucher running through about noon today for 25% off. Basically getting you the Gold Edition for the price of a standard. Not too shabby.

III was good, even though Connor fell kind of flat as a character. The movement and combat felt much more fluid than previous ACs.

So far Black Flag is pretty badass...I keep getting distracted by every ship on the horizon and feel compelled to sink it. I've completed only about 6 main story missions

I would suggest doing a little wikipedia reading on the plot of the previous games, especially the overarching storyline. You might not be that lost without knowing, but I think it'd help sort things out for you.

Fun game but the overarching storyline for these AC games has turned into the video game version of Lost, an incoherent mess designed to be milked into eternity.

I'm still thoroughly enjoying this. I'm only about half-way through the missions, but have spent a bunch of time hunting and harpooning and defeating and sending ships to my fleet and upgrading my shihp.

I've gotten all the legendary ships, sank several level 5 pirate hunter patrols (and captured about 7 or 8 of the highest level man o war ships), completed all the regular missions and am now doing the DLC & extra content. I might move on to multiplayer soon. I wonder if my ship from the single player mode can be used in the multiplayer mode.

I could definitely see myself playing this game for a long time. Hands down one of the best games I've ever played.

Holla if you're on PS3 and wanna do some multiplayer shizzle.

Holy shitballs this game has entirely way too much "busy work" side missions and collectible locations. Seriously, fuck you developers. If you can't come up with something better than adding 8 million chest/animus fragment locations, you should just stop making these games. This is just fucking irritating and serves no purpose than to extend the playing time with completely EMPTY tasks.

i think it's awesome. if you want, you can just ignore the chest/animus missions if you want.

i never finished this and had to put it down for the past couple months but hope to have the time to pick it back up soon.

I just started Origins (Ancient Egypt). I got it for Christmas. Seems pretty cool so far... has some Red Dead Redemption elements.

Origins is good, I need to get back into it. I was pretty shocked at how big it was and I got distracted by Monster Hunter.

Not going to lie, Odyssey is also looking pretty awesome. I'm keeping an eye on that.

I'm behind the curve on Assassin's Creed. I did play through Black Flag earlier this year though and really enjoyed it. One thing it failed to explain though was how Edward was able to just kinda pick up all of the free running/jumping/climbing/etc. skills that the assassins have. At the beginning of the game he took the clothes from that assassin, assumed his identity, and was just able to do all the stuff. Great game though!

So after Black Flag but before Origins, the main AC games were Unity, Syndicate, and Rogue. Were any of those any good or vital to the story line?

I haven't really noticed much in the way of an overarching story since the end of the Ezio Triolgy (Desmond's story). Most of them revolve around Abstergo's general interest in finding Pieces of Eden.

^^In the main, no. I've played all three over the last 3 years but I couldn't tell you how the "main" story has changed.

Unity and Rogue are linked and have a fun intertwined moment but (a) I don't want to spoil it and (b) I don't think its worth the 30 hours between both games to experience it.

FWIW Black Flag has been my favorite AC game. Haven't payed Origins yet.

^Feels like after AC3 the modern storyline has come to a screeching halt.

I’ve played most of them, black flag is probably my favorite. Probably because of the ship fighting and shark hunts and stuff, just gave it a little bit of a different feel. All the others have been basically exactly the same (but like I said I still usually end up playing them). Is Origins any different, or just more of the same?

Origins is different in some ways, most notably combat and it being a lot more sandbox-y, and similar in a lot of others like traversal, assassination mechanics, etc.

It still feels like an AC game, but it adds a lot of A-RPG elements to make it lean closer to a game like The Witcher III.

I've played a lot of them, but it's sometimes been years between them.... did old ones have hunting? I don't remember that, that's one of the things I was referring to it being like Red Dead.

I always find the stark differences in opinions for this series to be so interesting.

I loved AC3 but then AC4 supplanted it and now Origins is either #2 or #3.

Several of my friends loved AC3, even more so than AC4.

In general the consensus I've seen most is 3/4 are most people's tops, but I've seen some rank Black Flag behind some of the earlier iterations(ridiculous).

I think the character, setting, and time period for 3 were awesome, but I remember really not liking the story and a lot of the missions.
