galaxy s2
cheap (~$50 with contract) fast (dual core @ 1.2ghz) handles everything you would normally throw at it better video than iPhone5
if you want bragging rights, it's between galaxy s3 and iphone5 which may be around $150 with contract, I suppose

iPhone pros: - better battery life than androids - generally more stable as far as apps closing at random, random resets, etc
android pros: - open source so more free apps, apps from more sources (google play, amazon app store, random .APK files) - flash compatible for sites that haven't upgraded to html5 - (depending on model) can actually swap out batteries without needing a special hex tool
my advice though is always to go to a best buy type store and handle them both yourself and see what you prefer...android and iOS are both user-friendly operating systems, but plenty of people prefer one or the other...see which you like
then order one from somebody cheaper than shitty best buy lol 3/9/2013 5:48:05 PM |

if you want more opportunities to use a phone for reasons other than calling/texting people, then yes you should get a smart phone
if you only plan to use your phone to call/text, then you can go w/o a smart phone

iPhone is pretty user friendly.
If you don't plan to "do" much, it might be the right choice.
Pretty much what TT said, with the addition that the iPhone is lacking in screen size, comparatively. 3/9/2013 6:01:02 PM |

Not entirely true. It's not "officially" supported but you can get the archived 4.0 version from adobe and use a flash compatible browser like Firefox. Works fine on my Nexus 10 running 4.2.2.] 3/9/2013 6:21:26 PM |

Yes, you have to sideload Flash. But even then, I did find it buggy on my Nexus 7.
I personally prefer the iPhone though. There may be more free apps for Android, but they are seriously subpar and shitty. I find iOS to have far more quality apps available. 3/9/2013 6:27:43 PM |

since merbig has derailed the thread, i too prefer my iPhone, since if the battery dies, I get to take it to an Apple Store so a Genius can replace the battery since I'm not technically adept enough to do it myself 3/9/2013 6:29:14 PM |

I don't care for apple as a company and find their "innovations" largely idiotic. Nothing like being too fucking obstinate to just have a fucking mini-USB input for charging and data. 3/9/2013 6:33:17 PM |

Got an Iphone and love it. It's definitely not the best phone on the market, but it reigns supreme when it comes to the marketplace for apps and content.
Also, since I'm a mac user it integrates really well with my laptop and ipad.
It's also fairly idiot-proof, which tends to bring on a lot of hate, but it's a factor of design I find ingenious.
I don't think this will last much longer. Apple seems to be losing the battle when it comes to holding the market share on great design coupled with advancing technology. 3/9/2013 6:39:09 PM |

But seriously, if you like simplicity and ease of us go the iPhone route. If you like to modify or personalize your stuff get an android. Chances are if you haven't gotten a smartphone or tablet yet in this day and age, you'll prefer an iPhone.

WP8 only has one PDF reader and its made by Microsoft. And until the latest update it couldn't read anything except standard 8.5"x11" PDFs with no layers. SO if you review technical documents, PDFs with comments, or drawing size PDFs you definitely could NOT do it on WP8 until very recently. 3/9/2013 7:58:00 PM |

if you rely on a phone to review drawing size documents, you need to invest in a computer
i use my phone to scan through 8.5x11 pdf documents
if i need to look at a 36"x48" drawing, i'm not gonna be the idiot who tries to do it all from my smartphone

when i worked in a field that relied on drawing sized documents, there was always at least one hard copy set on-site
sure if you wanna verify the dimensons of a bedroom while you're dropping a deuce, a phone can assist in that
but thats about all it can do, assist
i can give you a takeoff from some PDFs on door and hardware prices, drywall and stud prices, etc, but i'm not going into the field with nothing but a smartphone, so its not an issue 3/9/2013 8:12:07 PM |
dtownral Suspended 26632 Posts user info edit post |
when someone emails you some updated drawings to approve, just tell them you'll wait for the hardcopy to be fedexed because Windows Phone!
Now at least you can view them, and it works well, you just can't mark them up. 3/9/2013 8:14:47 PM |

i appreciate being able to view more than just MS Office documents on my phone, I'm just not making a smartphone purchase decision based on being able to finger flick through a large scale document
and like i said, androids, iphones, blackberrys (and apparently not old windows phones) can already open PDF files, so i dont get the beef
besides, if updated drawings are coming in, i should be able to open them on a computer, cause if the architect is updating drawings during construction, you have a lot more things to worry about than your smartphone capabilities 3/9/2013 8:21:14 PM |

A/E's update drawings during the project on pretty much any project, that's the entire point of revisions and document control. You also have to send them redlined asbuilts, and its in your interest as a cover-your-ass measure to wait for them to update drawings before proceeding. 3/9/2013 8:29:46 PM |
TreeTwista10 minisoldr 148235 Posts user info edit post |
no, architects and engineers do not pretty much update the project during the construction phase on any project, they tend to do it pre-construction, unless any unforseen circumstances come up
and still, relying on your phone is dumb for that purpose
there is a reason drawings are generally 11x17 - 36x48
because they arent meant to be looked at on cellphones] 3/9/2013 8:34:40 PM |

The iPhone 5 screen is too small and thin making it not easy to type on. So an android phone is better from that aspect. Also there are more android phones to choose from and they aren't as overpriced. 3/9/2013 8:49:33 PM |

I think if you have a use for having a computer in your pocket, then a smartphone would be beneficial. Comes down to whether or not you will take advantage of the features it has to offer. Otherwise it's not worth the extra money. Things I use my smartphone for: GPS Calendar Weather Facebook TWW Moodle Looking up phone numbers Google talk Video chat Games
As far as what type of smartphone. Do you have an ipad or apple computer? Do you want the fastest Internet speed? Do you want a large screen or small phone? How much are you willing to spend? For the love of God, don't get a free phone, you cheap fucks. How important is battery life? My razr maxx will last 2 days. <3 Do you want to be able to customize your device? Do you want an all touch or one with a keyboard? 3/9/2013 9:47:53 PM |

I'm not even in the A/E/C field anymore to know that's not true. I talked with my former CA colleagues for more than 5 minutes and understand there's a million reasons for changes to get made after construction begins and drawings need to be updated.
The thing that worries me is that construction professionals are relying on their smart phones to review drawings. If this is a regular part of the job, why would you not have a laptop in the field, or at the least a tablet?3/10/2013 11:44:25 AM |
