I'm gonna have the 3rd master in CS soon. I already have two in EE and CE(computer engineering). I'm a bit of confused about what I can do with three masters for my future career now. I'm already 32 yrs old, and have been in academic field for about 10 yrs. Currently I'm doing a career transition, from academic field to industry. I bet many ppl experience such transition as well. So should I focus on positions of R&D department in companies? The thing is, I don't have many publications, only some reviewers titles. Any suggestions are welcome. 3/10/2013 1:54:17 PM |

What do you want to do?
Try to get yourself there. Don't go to industry just because you think it's the thing to do. And if you do go to industry, apply for jobs that are interesting to you.
I have a hunch that you've gotten three MS's because you don't know what you want to do. Now it's time to man up and make some choices. I was in the same boat as you (more or less) 3.5 years ago. Count yourself lucky that at least the job market is in a decent place right now compared to 2009. 3/10/2013 5:10:05 PM |

One thing you shouldn't do with three Master's degrees is cross-post the same question to multiple boards. 3/10/2013 9:16:33 PM |

You mean you are going from being a student to a worker? That's not a "career transition", as being a student is not a career, even if you do it for 10+ years. Or do you really mean what that sentence means, which is that you are moving from an academic field (teacher, lecturer, lab instructor, etc) to industry?
Why did you get the 3 master's degrees if you don't know what to do with them? I don't know, how about something completely crazy and unrelated to your degrees, like applying for jobs at Google, Yahoo, Facebook, Microsoft, IBM, Apple, Adobe, Oracle, Cisco, etc. ???!!! 3/11/2013 3:30:09 AM |

I still have a course paper to finish. If there's nobody hiring me, i still need to get it done. It prevents me from developing my career now. The course is Introduction to cognitive science. not very useful either. 3/11/2013 5:58:29 PM |

What kind of educational plan were you on that led you to get three master's degrees? I can't think of a single reason to get three master's degrees as opposed to getting a PhD. The only thing I can't think of is that you are incapable of doing original independent research. 3/11/2013 6:04:40 PM |

R&D without a PhD + postdoc work is going to be difficult as a starting position. Doable, but difficult, and would recommend you broaden your perspective for getting your first job.
If you are still a student, go to the Career Center. They will be able to assist better than TWW will. [/thread] 3/11/2013 9:51:31 PM |

Uh yeah, that does not mean you were in an "academic field". As I said, you are transitioning from STUDENT to WORKER, not doing a "career transition" from "academic field to industry". You are not doing a "career transition", you are STARTING YOUR CAREER.

I don't get why people get more than 1 masters degree. You can have 2 masters or 50 masters it is not going to increase your level of education and make you qualified for more jobs. Should have spent that time getting a PHD 3/16/2013 10:31:45 AM |

You should really go back to undergrad and get a few bachelor degrees to add onto those masters degrees. I would say get at least six of those before you even think about entering the workforce. 3/19/2013 9:17:55 AM |

if you are gonna get several master's degrees, at least get different kinds of master's rather than all MSs.
how about
MS MBA MPhil
