I seem to remember not too long ago there were discussions of adding campuses, possibly a UNC Rocky Mount.

Investing in education seems like a good investment to me, but with this as the proposal, the inevitable middle ground moderate position will be to disinvest in education some.

^^agreed. on the high school level. making certain kids learn Shakespeare and European history won't be nearly as good for them as reading/writing technical reports and learning the progression of technology in things like cars, hvac, etc.

My guess is Pembroke and Elizabeth City State will get the axe. You know they won't touch Winston Salem State, Central, or A&T. I'm sure they probably aren't even considering it, but based on the comments within the article, that is exactly where opponents are going.

This governor was elected to get our financial situation in order. Colleges and Universities have long been a cash cow for a lot of people, and I think its time that they get their fair share of oversight. Tuition has outpaced inflation by double digits for how many years? Why? Who's getting all this cash? Why does it still cost so much money for an in-state student to go to a state funded university? If they take Pembroke out of the university system, it isn't like all those people that work there are going to lose their jobs. They'll convert to a separate college or reduce their status to a community college, and the professors that hold any merit will take their 6 figure job and get hired somewhere else.

I will advocate for preserving A&T (disclosure: I have family and close friends linked to the school). The university has a solid engineering program with some significant ties to the regional economy. Their graduate programs in particular has been good for the local community, providing a way for the western part of the state to get continuing education in the engineering disciplines. While the university is still a HBCU, their graduate program is much more "diverse" in their enrollment and interaction.

If they are going to continue to cut higher ed, the fiscally prudent thing to do would be closing campuses...not cutting your successful campuses to the bone.
