Crony Pope/Duke Energy employees appointed to run everything
About 10 to 20 different efforts to manipulate the vote
Bills banning boobs, making divorce harder, and to allow a state established religion
Seizing municipal assets while claiming to be small government champions
Putting climate change deniers and pro-fracking advocates in charge of regulating the environment
Amendment 1

There's more. But that's a start.

Vulcan91 put this together:

Quote :
"Summary of bills being worked on by the NC legislature in 2013:

-Nullification of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution (in order to establish a state religion)
-Nullifying of lease for Dorothea Dix Park
-Voter photo ID requirement
-Reduction of unemployment benefits
-Prison time for women exposing their breasts
-Effective removal of the right of college students to vote where they go to school
-Taking of Charlotte Douglas International from city to state control
-Taking of Asheville's water system (without compensation)
-Prohibition of the ability of cities to establish development standards (nullifying Raleigh's new Unified Development Ordinance)
-Nullification of co-ed roommates policy established at UNC, designed to help GLTB students who are harassed or bullied in traditional housing
-Nullification of the state's requirement that utilities produce a small portion of their power from renewable sources
-Removal of tenure for teachers
-Rejection of federal dollars to expand Medicaid
-Elimination of earned income tax credit
-Elimination of straight-party ticket voting

Part of me was excited about have Republicans in office because it meant that some sensible gun rights legislation could be passed.... but holy fuck I didn't want all this other shit to come along with it. These guys truly are a cancer to this state with all of the partisan bills being proposed and passed. It's sad that our state of politics has come to this. These guys aren't solving problems. They aren't passing/proposing legislation to better the state. They're ramming as much uber-conservative shit down our throats as quickly as possible since they haven't had this control in decades in hopes that the morons of the state will see what "good" legislation they've passed and help keep them in control. I am truly worried about the future of this state now.

So do you guys just sit around reading the BlueNC twitter feed all day long? Or do you just get email blasts from someone at the NCGA who sends out an alert every time any elected Republican files a bill/resolution with the Clerk?

I seriously don't know why you consistently jump to absurd conclusions. You are always reading more into something than is clearly there. Did I say I voted all Republican for one issue? Or did I say that I was glad that having Republicans in power could help one issue which is important to me.

Maybe I'm naive... I expected some bullshit (fracking, Voter ID, Racial Bias law, etc.) but not this much and not such far reaching legislation.

The mandating cursive bill is an odd one. I don't see any obvious direct connections with big money interests or ideology, other than the right's general preference for old timeyness. It's certainly not in the category of some of the horrendous bills that are being proposed, but it's odd for supposedly small government advocates to be trying to micromanage teachers when they won office on a jobs, jobs jobs, agenda.

^^^ Clearly you haven't been paying attention then. All these things are happening in other states (and they would be happening nationally if the Republicans weren't clinging onto an illegitimate majority in the House of Representatives) because ALEC is running the fucking show for the Republicans. It's basically a neoconservative/big business organization that uses their puppet Republicans to pass legislation that ALEC literally writes for them. None of these bumfuck state senators and reps know what the fuck is going on. They're just there for the free ride and to push the right button when the time comes.

I read the voter ID bill. Its surprisingly watered down, but still allows for fucking over those non-educated voters who dont pay attention to poilitics and simply show up and vote.

-As far as college students, pubic university IDs will be valid, but private university IDs will not be.
-Acceptable IDs will have a 10 year expired grace period. You read that right. They will accept it up to 10 years after expiration. If you are over age 70 expired IDs become permanently valid.
-Disabled/handicap people are exempt from the ID requirement upon signing an affidavit.

Quote :
"Fee for voter ID might be unconstitutional

RALEIGH, N.C. — Some legal experts say charging people for photo identification cards in order to vote in North Carolina might violate the state constitution."

Quote :
"Charging someone money to vote is a poll tax, which is outlawed by the 24th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Other states with voter ID laws offer free IDs to anyone, regardless of their ability to pay.

Under the North Carolina legislation, people would have to pay for the ID unless they're willing to swear under penalty of perjury – a felony offense – that they're too poor to pay for it.

"If they say they have financial hardship, the same penalties of perjury apply if they misrepresent that," Rep. Tom Murry, R-Wake, said Thursday."

Who is going to risk a felony to vote, especially for such an ill-defined and intimidating standard?

Dome: NC lawmaker equates Islamic prayer with terrorism

Read more here: http://www.newsobserver.com/2013/04/09/2813754/dome-nc-lawmaker-equates-islamic.html#storylink=cpy

Quote :
"An N.C. House lawmaker is equating any prayer to the Islamic God with terrorism.

In an email exchange with a constituent, Republican state Rep. Michele Presnell of Burnsville was asked whether she was comfortable with a prayer to Allah before a legislative meeting. Presnell responded: “No, I do not condone terrorism.”

The first-year lawmaker who represents a district in the North Carolina mountains is a co-sponsor of House resolution 494, a measure asserting that North Carolina can establish a state religion. She did not return a call for comment Monday about the string of emails obtained by Dome.

“The famed ACLU is telling Rowan County they may not pray before commissioners meetings,” Presnell wrote to Britt Kaufmann, a constituent. “We pray in Raleigh before our legislative meetings, U.S. Congress prays in Washington DC, why can they not pray?”

Kaufmann replied: “Yes, I do understand that the ACLU is suing Rowan County and I think they have clearly articulated why they are not comfortable with prayer before the commissioners meetings. I wanted you, as my representative, to know that I do not think the proposed bill is a good solution to that problem. … Would you be comfortable with a public prayer to Allah before a legislative meeting in Raleigh?”

Presnell equated Islam to terrorism and added, “We just need to start taking a stand on our religious freedom or it will be whisked away from us.”

The email exchange ends with Presnell telling her constituent: “No, you are wrong. Have a good day.”

Her stance appears to differ from that of the primary sponsor of the bill, Rep. Harry Warren, a Salisbury Republican, who later apologized for the resolution’s poor wording and how it embarrassed the state.

‘Anti-Bloomberg’ bill here, too

Not to be outdone by Mississippi, three North Carolina lawmakers on Tuesday filed a bill that would prohibit cities and counties from limiting how big a soft drink can be.

Recently, Mississippi passed such a law, “The Anti-Bloomberg Bill,” which took a swipe at New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s effort to limit giant sugary drinks for health reasons.

House Bill 683, filed Tuesday in North Carolina, would also protect food manufacturers from being sued over weight gain, obesity or other conditions stemming from long-term consumption. Packers, distributors, carriers, sellers, marketers and advertisers also would be protected.

Sponsors are Rep. Brian Brown, a Republican from Greenville; Rep. Tim Moffitt, a Republican from Asheville; and Rep. Nathan Ramsey, a Republican from Fairview.

13-year-olds tried as adults

Children 13 and older would have to be tried in adult court for the most serious crimes under a bill pending in the state House.

Currently, only teenagers accused of first-degree murder automatically must have their cases heard in Superior Court, where proceedings are confidential and the punishment is generally less severe.

Judges already can transfer the most serious felonies to adult court if they find there is probable cause that the juvenile committed the crime. This bill would require them to transfer the cases.

The bill by Speaker Pro Tem Paul “Skip” Stam, a Republican from Apex, and Rep. John Faircloth, a second-term Republican from High Point, would expand the offenses eligible for adult court to include felonies designed as Class B1 to Class D.

That covers such crimes as first-degree rape, on the high end, down to voluntary manslaughter, first-degree burglary and armed robbery.

A legislative staff report shows that the cases of 19 juveniles who were at least 13 and charged with the most serious felonies were transferred to adult court last year.

There has been an ongoing effort to go in the other direction: to keep more juveniles out of adult court to lessen the likelihood that they’ll be repeat offenders. North Carolina is one of only two states that prosecute 16- and 17-year-olds as adults.

They don't appear to be too concerned over their image right now, since the midterms are still far off and the voting populace has short memory. They aren't stupid however. Thom Tillis killing the state religion bill is a sign that they are aware that their legislation is drawing national attention. He has his hands full with the lower IQ reps from bumfuckville enacting idiotically juicy transparent legislation. If their current strategy is any indication, they are probably putting all of their eggs in the voter suppression, and super PAC baskets and media-wise will be running on a pro-business platform. It's easy to predict after you look at the actions of other ALEC/GOP states and they appear to be doing this color by numbers, lock-step. That's my guess.

How is my question irrelevant? As evinced by yet another thread dedicated to another proposed bill - http://www.brentroad.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=636252 - I'm simply curious as to his own personal biases. But please correct me if I've violated some type of TSB rule by requesting such information, given my inexperienced status as an actual commenter I could have easily missed the memo.

I suppose my point is how are these bills selected to be thread-worthy here at TSB given the large number of actual bills introduced? Is this the herculean effort of one individual to read and report on every single bill introduced by every member of the NCGA? Or is there some additional incentive to do so?

Not really commenting on the bill he introduced, just his attitude. Maybe I'm just paying closer attention this year but the arrogance seems to be more prevalent lately.
