Buddy at work is looking to sell his ~3 year old Samsung 50" 1080p Plasma tv. It seems like it has a capacitor issue with the power supply. He says it turns on but sometimes can take up to 5-8 min. to power up. I've googled the issue and it seems like blown capacitors on the power supply which is a cheap fix that I'd be comfortable doing. I may be interested in buying it but does anyone know what the value of such a unit is? How much should the issue detract from the price? He hasn't thrown a number at me yet but I want to have an idea beforehand. Hopefully I'll get the model # tomorrow to do more research but thanks if anyone has any info/advice.

you can buy a brand new 50" 1080p plasma tv for like $700

his is 3 years old, and has issues turning on

i wouldn't offer him any more than about $200

i have PN42A450P1DXZA (a 42" 720p plasma i bought in early 2008)...it's covered under the settlement, but it's not actually causing me any problems

how can i get a free TV or money out of this...you know, for when it DOES crap out

related to the capacitor settlement and the fact that i'm not (currently) experiencing any problems, should i have them go ahead and replace the capacitors for free? because the way i'm reading it, they will:

"If, during the free service visit, the SEA authorized service personnel cannot verify a Capacitor Issue covered by the Settlement, SEA will nonetheless replace the subject capacitors at no cost to you. If that does not fix your Television, you will be afforded the opportunity (but not the obligation) to pay the authorized service personnel to attempt to fix your Television at your expense."

the settlement runs 18 months from march 2, 2012...so it expires monday, september 2, 2013
