So the birds around me are dicks, they broke the cover to the vent and made a nest deep in there. I just found egg shells on the ground, so I assume the chicks just recently hatched. I don't have a ladder tall enough (It is at the top of 3 stories) and I doubt I have anything to get them out with anyway.

Any recommendations?

I would think actually pushing the nest out from the inside would be better.... The duct I would guess is about 20 feet deep and probably has twists and turns.... maybe recommendations for a professional duct-work-type or pipe cleaning person. Also, not sure how I feel about potentially massacring a bunch of newly hatched chicks, although I do hate their parents.

I guess I'll pay a nearby construction worker $20. Neighbor says that is what they did last year for the same problem. Just need to buy a new vent cover to hand to them.

This may have been a small and stupid issue to bring to Old School, but I would still like you guys to know that you suck... and I was expected more discussion around not killing the birds also.

my wife uses the dryer a minimum of 2 times daily and the mother bird is still bringing food in there. I assume they are alive still and we've discontinued use of the dryer for now

I would say it's just the opposite. Your electric bill must be through the roof running the dryer at least twice a day. Bitch needs to learn to work more efficiently.

She's a bit like Monica from friends... a lot of cleaning all day everyday. 2 kids ruin a lot of clothing constantly. The dryer even gets its load info from the washer to make everything more efficient. ANYWAY, she just does a lot of laundry and she is now stuck. We can't find a nearby worker to come help out, I've called 2 guys now that do "dryer vent cleaning" on Craigslist and they only clean from the inside, getting them 28ft in the air to replace a cover is another story

As for replacing the cover: Just buy the ladder you need from Lowe's, replace the cover, then return the ladder and get your money back. I have done this several times with "specialty" tools that I knew I would only need once.

Had a window/gutter/duct cleaning service guy come out yesterday. He said the nest is about 5 ft into the pipe and near a bend. He could not reach it and said that if he used any brushes, that it would just push the nest in further. He also said that the duct is the thing material that easily rips, so he would not try snaking anything through it. There are 5 chicks in the nest, newly hatched, their eyes are not even open yet.

Animal control coming today...

These guys came out today and took care of it: http://www.trianglewildliferemoval.com/. They had long pinchers to remove everything. There were 6 chicks in all. They will be given to a bird rehab center. $150 total and they replaced the vent covers for me (I had the replacements on hand though). Sigh

I was trimming my bushes yesterday and as I was cutting one of them I noticed a nest with eggs in it. I had already exposed the nest, but I left the rest of the adjacent foliage untouched, so now I have a neatly trimmed bush with a large tuft poking up in the middle
