Has anyone seen this one yet? I think I'm going tonight or tomorrow to see it. Tom Cruise gets a lot of hate, but this seems to be generating positive reviews across the board.

I definitely want to see this movie, just don't know when I'll get the chance. Hopefully it will rain all day Sunday and we can make it to the theaters.

Tom Cruise is a great action movie actor. He's also an above average actor overall. Just another example of people hating someone's work because they don't like him/her as a person.

He may be crazy but the man can act. I went to see it last weekend, it was better than I expected. From the trailers I thought it kind of looked like a generic sci-fi movie but I was pleased.

I saw it Sunday and really liked it. Fun movie. However I think I preferred Olympus Has Fallen more (the other movie I've seen recently).

Saw it Sunday night, it was definitely entertaining and the special effects were pretty great. However, it is literally a mash-up of Independence Day, 2001 Space Odyssey, Minority Report, and The Matrix all in one film. You can say the story is original, but it's really not. I enjoyed it overall though

Does IMAX make a difference with this one? The IMAX show times are really inconvenient

i found the action to be rather bland. the fighter pod airplane thing (or whatever) chase was not very exciting.

that said, i did enjoy it still from a sci fi perspective. it was worth at least 1 watch to me.

I have some questions I'll write out tomorrow but I just wanted to say I thought this was a great movie. A great start to my summer run. And an awesome rebound for Cruise.

I saw it last weekend and thought it was worth watching, don't regret spending 10 bucks on it, but certainly wouldn't call it great.

Did it seem to anyone else like Tom was bouncing back and forth between the East and West coast of the US? One scene he was in wasteland New York City, then all of a sudden he's by the Golden Gate Bridge? Just seemed weird.

Saw it, loved it. Would see it again, and will definitely by buying the DVD. Some very interesting sci-fi concepts to contemplate here.

^^ it crossed my mind. i chalked it up to either being 1. a diff bridge, or 2. REALLY fast spaceship pods.

this, and more on the story: i thought that the plot twists were also a mash-up of old twists from any old scifi movies/series/books that i have seen/read throughout my life.

[Edited on April 26, 2013 at 6:49 PM. Reason : still was a very solid scifi film especially since it wasn't a sequel/prequel like most popular scif]

SPOILER ALERT

How the fuck did the "tet" machine survive with instincts that allowed Jack to fuck around for a few minutes before he played hero, and much less, not exterminate him on the spot?

Was it your first sf film? Or did you miss, to start, Imposter, Matrix, 2001, et al?

When I watched the movie, I thought they were calling the orbiting triangular thing the Tent. It made sense in multiple ways. It was triangular, kinda how you would imagine a rudimentary tent. In theory, it was humanity's temporary home, kinda like a tent.

According to IMDB, turns out it is called Tet.

Ok, front half of tetrahedron. Meh. Liked Tent better.

^^ SPOILER

I'd argue the same think when it attacks the resistance's home. That one drone rapes EVERYTHING and then pauses to scan Jack's wife and the kids just for long enough time to get shot in the back and die.

I knew people would complain about those things, but I still thought it was okay.

Saw it Sunday, largely against my will (girlfriend begged me to see it), but it was a surprisingly enjoyable movie. As others said, it's basically a mash up of Matrix, Wall-E, and Independence Day -- but that's not really a bad thing. Even some shades of Top Gun in parts.

Most of the puzzle pieces came together when Jack talked with Beech (Morgan Freeman), but there were still a few things that didn't add up. Who cares though ... it was thought-provoking if nothing else, and that's the beauty of Sci-Fi films.

Not an instant-classic or anything, but a fun movie that leads to some good discussion. Do recommend.

it's a gorgeous movie for the theater and that's what i've told people who aren't big on sci-fi. The soundtrack and visuals make is a great cinematic experience.

^Yeah, the music is incredible. Reminded me of the Dark Knight. It's soothing but intense at the same time, almost hypnotic in parts -- like when Jack and Victoria are getting it on in the pool.

Reminded me a lot of Mass Effect with the look and sound of the weapons/technology.

And of course Portal.

VERY surprised how much I enjoyed this movie. Fantastic.

At $2 movies now. Thought it was solid.

^Yea the music/weapons/scenery all made me want to play Mass Effect 1 again.

*SPOILERS*

I liked the intro/story... Aliens destroy moon (original?) then invade. Then FOR ONCE in an Alien movie... humanity uses nukes and wins/ties (Just saying usually nukes are overlooked or negated by BS in all Aliens take over earth movies)

Of course the whole Aliens aren't Aliens twist kinda disappointed me and I guess that means the intro wasn't what actually happened?

Still surprisingly better than I expected.

Yeah, if you think that humanity used the nukes and won, or even tied the aliens then you must have completely missed the entire 2nd half of the movie. That's not what happened at all.

thats how you knew it was bullshit. theres no way an intelligence that can make it this far is going to be slowed down if they are hostile. they likely wouldn't be hostile but if we suspend judgement on that they would be ready for nukes. we'd be like fighting ants.

Watched this on HBOGo today. Really enjoyed it. Good SciFi is hard to come by (though more prolific than westerns...bitter). I think having seen "Moon" really played into me figuring it all out about half way through the movie. Right around the time they found the crashed life pod.

I really don't get why it didn't get better reviews.

Between this and Game of Thrones, now my wife really wants to go visit Iceland.

Also, that wasn't the Golden Gate bridge. They showed the GW bridge during a long shot (the two towers were sticking out of the new ground-level...and then there was the brooklyn bridge spanning the chasm when he was running from the drones.
