^^ maybe but as I said they have been hyping Vault7 since long before Trump was elected.

He has a recent history of tweeting and pointing to already released things that coincide with right-wing "news" stories (broken record but the dumb GatewayPundit earpiece thing) but to my knowledge he hasn't released new things based on that.

Wikileaks probably picked now to get the most traffic. Strike while the iron's hot.

But does any of their revelations surprise us? We should always ever conduct ourselves with the knowledge that everything we do is probably recorded to some extent. Data storage is cheap. Data mining is easy.

What bothers me is why they think they need all this data. What good does it do to spy on Samsung fans? Are they hoping that maybe, just maybe, an ISIS insider in this country might buy a Samsung tv?

it makes sense to target Samsung as they are the largest TV manufacturer in the world; you get access to more intel by going after them than you would with ASUS or Toshiba. While plenty of people are aware that their cell phones and computers can be used to spy on them, I doubt many were considering that their TV and car could spy on them also.

They found a Samsung vulnerability, so they used it. It's not about Samsung, specifically. They'll collect data from any source they can get into.

Supposedly this first release is only 1% of what they have. Good lord.

I'm interested in seeing what get's released in the later batches from Wikileaks. If I read some of the initial content correctly, the CIA managed to lose control of their entire malware platform and hackers around the world now have access to it. To top it all off, the malware is technically unclassified, so there's nothing illegal about being in possession of it.

It would be nice to see Wikileaks release stuff on other countries/industries/people rather than focusing entirely on the United States intelligence community.

If they didn't start out as one, they are surely a Russian puppet at this point.

They release plenty from other countries, including Russia.

https://wikileaks.org/-Leaks-.html

It's really not hard to figure out why they would focus most of their efforts on the US. We are THE superpower, and we operate unethically all over the world. We set the standard for everyone else.

I mean fuck, I don't think people are understanding how terrible this leak is.

For instance, one of the CIA's targets was Blackberry's car software, used in 60 million cars worldwide. They are looking for zero-day exploits that no one else knows about. Put in the wrong hands, these exploits could be massively dangerous, and we now know that their entire trove is out on the black market.

It's fucking unbelievable.

You can assume that black hat groups have individually discovered some of these exploits, but the CIA's hacking division employs over 5000 people with massive funding from the US government. There's no comparison.

And even if you're assuming that black hats know ALL of these exploits, the CIA is still intentionally leaving them open.

to a very, very small extent you may be correct. but you have to understand the calibre of people who work for cia/nsa working on this. so without a wikileaks dump, the stuff they were using was absolutely not out there, especially on hacker forums on the internet.

i didn't read the wikileak, just the reporting, but everything they reported was known stuff. were there new or unknown things in the actual leak?

What do we make of Nigel Farage meeting with Assange potentially?

Five years ago if you would've told me Julian Assange would become a right-wing hero I'd have called you insane..

some was known, some was suspected but not confirmed (leaving zero day exploits open, hacking cars and tvs, etc)

what wasn't known: the number of exploits, the capability to change the signature of an attack, and that all of these tools have been circling in ex-CIA circles for a while now

snowden's twitter has some info, along with r/netsec

^^
i think its smart of assange to meet with people in high places. and it's dumb for liberals or conservatives to believe assange is on either of their "side". he's been very clear about his intent since the beginning

it's pretty strange.

i know you question their intent sometimes, but WL just did us an immense service. they're now collaborating with tech companies to close all of these exploits. it's unprecedented.

tech companies have a revolving door with intelligence agencies and private intelligence companies, many were probably aware of exploits and the government's use of them

some, yes, but you can't say how many.

and the nature of some of these tools might reveal which companies were complicit. VLC and Notepad++? Probably not.

They haven't leaked any of the tools or specific methodologies. They will help companies patch the holes, then release more.

The CIA hacked DNC then blamed it on Russia to make sure Hillary could blame Trump theory is the most bizarre wacko thing I've ever seen. 9/11 truthers are more coherent. But it's mainstream now with Hannity, Limbaugh and Coulter pushing it.

^ i read a bit about it overnight while my son was not sleeping and it seems to me what was released was far different from the WL write up about it. Most of what was already released is likely already patched and fixed. Lots of misinformation (some due to WL but most not). Sounds like the offer to help is pure PR. Smart, but PR.

I was a little foggy when I read it but the SmartTV thing was not as crazy as I thought. Needed a USB to work, no?

Anyway, I still think it's useful this stuff gets out and is talked about to be honest. It just needs to be disseminated in a reasonable way (and fwiw I think the same about the Russia thing -- by all means talk about and investigate it but the hyperbole is counterproductive).

Quote :
"Today, March 23rd 2017, WikiLeaks releases Vault 7 “Dark Matter”, which contains documentation for several CIA projects that infect Apple Mac Computer firmware (meaning the infection persists even if the operating system is re-installed) developed by the CIA’s Embedded Development Branch (EDB). These documents explain the techniques used by CIA to gain ‘persistence’ on Apple Mac devices, including Macs and iPhones and demonstrate their use of EFI/UEFI and firmware malware.

Among others, these documents reveal the “Sonic Screwdriver” project which, as explained by the CIA, is a “mechanism for executing code on peripheral devices while a Mac laptop or desktop is booting” allowing an attacker to boot its attack software for example from a USB stick “even when a firmware password is enabled”. The CIA’s “Sonic Screwdriver” infector is stored on the modified firmware of an Apple Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet adapter.

“DarkSeaSkies” is “an implant that persists in the EFI firmware of an Apple MacBook Air computer” and consists of “DarkMatter”, “SeaPea” and “NightSkies”, respectively EFI, kernel-space and user-space implants.

Documents on the “Triton” MacOSX malware, its infector “Dark Mallet” and its EFI-persistent version “DerStake” are also included in this release. While the DerStake1.4 manual released today dates to 2013, other Vault 7 documents show that as of 2016 the CIA continues to rely on and update these systems and is working on the production of DerStarke2.0.

Also included in this release is the manual for the CIA’s “NightSkies 1.2” a “beacon/loader/implant tool” for the Apple iPhone. Noteworthy is that NightSkies had reached 1.2 by 2008, and is expressly designed to be physically installed onto factory fresh iPhones. i.e the CIA has been infecting the iPhone supply chain of its targets since at least 2008."

1) as I've said for a long time, WL completely lost the plot from what their original intention was and became WAY too partisan or vindictive this past election cycle.

2) Even contemplating prosecution is simply a place the DoJ CANNOT go. It is a downright scary place we would be headed to.

Am I following this correctly? Macron leaks have Cyrillic metadata and implicate Employees of a Russian security "contractor."

So far Wikileaks reaction on twitter: "...could be happenstance? Right guys...?"

Right.

Macron seems to have handled these hacks as well as anyone so far.

Actually from what I can tell is that their view is that it's a setup to blame Russia. Also claimed equivalency between private citizen Obama endorsing Macron and DNC hack and leak.

WL is corrupted. Has been for some time now.
