What is the controversy surrounding the XBox One & 1080p?

A lot of the initial releases on the xbox are not running 1080p. Many people are pissed off about this. However, when you watch NUMEROUS side by side videos of a game that is running 1080p on a PS4 and then watch the upscaled version on the Xbone, the differences are BARELY perceptible.

The people in the know are saying this is just because the developers have not figured out how to optimize for the Xbox yet, and that given a little more time, this won't be an issue. Also, given the cross platform nature of most games, the titles are going to look identical, even if the xbox platform is slightly disadvantaged in the hardware end (the lowest common denominator will rule).

Its the only thing the PS4 fan boys have going for them. They have a console that is fairly 2 dimensional, and they want you to ignore all the extra functionality you get with the xbox and concentrate on a resolution issue that will be barely perceptible.

Xbox runs some games at native 720p upscaled to 1080p that PS4 runs at native 1080p.

Not that it is possible to tell a difference.

I'm very disappointed in the console nerds, they complain about a resolution difference that is physically impossible to notice... but not lag?

Every shooter I have played for the past decade on Xbox is on shit peer to peer host with lag spikes and fucking 200 ms latency on average. Curious to see if these "50,000 xbox live servers" are real and fix anything. Given the recent trend in console shooters, I doubt it.

Great explanations guys. I could care less about this issue as I would agree, at some point Microsoft will have native 1080p games.

The server count was supposed to be 300,000 strong last time I saw the specs. Did it get reduced? I haven't experienced any lag yet. The voice quality on chat is vastly improved on the XBone.

^^^^ exact reason why i won't be buying ghosts for 360. i'll also be gun-shy about it for XB1 as well but i'll at least redbox it. i'm slightly embarrassed to admit that i kind of liked ghosts this weekend when i rented it for 360... despite feeling like an arthritic 80 year old man trying to go one on one with lebron. it was all good but eventually host comp/lag issues reared their ugly heads.

Just get it for the XBone and consider it as your reflex training for when Titanfall comes out. That is what I am doing

300,000 is right, I pulled 50k out of my ass. I haven't kept up to date with it. I'm glad to hear party chat quality has improved, that is a good sign.

Voice over IP party chat is a constant strain on the interwebs, and if that is smooth and not fucked up I would take a guess and say the connection quality for multiplayer might suck less ass also.

Of course, when they say 300,000 servers, they don't mean physical servers. I am bringing up over 130 servers on 8 hosts at work in the next couple of weeks.

Kyle... I sent you a PM and an email.

It's best to sit in an empty room. A vacant bonus room is ideal.

Is anyone using the HDMI passthrough for anything besides a cable box? I tried it with the PS3, PS4, and my computer, and there was way too much video lag to be usable.

I read on some review that the guy was using it with a 360 and not having any lag issues so that makes me wonder if it was just the devices I was using or if it's actually an issue and people just don't notice when watching TV.

My entertainment center has a space at least 4" taller than the Xbox One and at least 6" wider, but I can't find specs for how much space I need

Hang it from a wire to make sure there is ventilation around all 6 sides of the box.

i know the xbox one is supposed to shutdown and tell you to reposition it if it overheats, so maybe I'll just try it out.

Yeah, I was using my bedroom TV where I have my 360 hooked up and I wanted to use voice commands. I guess I could just buy a kinect for 360 but I have mostly heard terrible things about the 360's kinect.

360's kinect is fine for basic voice features (pause, play, etc...) if you are in a quiet room, but its not nearly as useful because you still have to use the controller or gestures for most things

Walmart has had all xbox one games for $50 for the past week. Don't know if they are still doing it, that's probably the only deal you are going to get on new stuff. I picked up 2k14 Wednesday.

I just got an error message that tv was taking too long to load and tv would not work. Apparently its a common problem, seems to be software related but MS doesn't have a fix yet.

if you get this error the short term fix is to put the console in energy saving mode so you can't power it by saying Xbox one.

Swapping between Forza and snapping TV and ESPN made it freeze, I had to eject the Forza disk. It nay be related to the TV issue, MS doesn't have many answers yet in their support forums but the thought is that its software related.

Amazon has a few games on sale today for $10 off:

http://www.amazon.com/b/?node=8021566011

However, I picked up Ryse (for $35) and Battlefield 4 (for $40) off of half.com instead. If you check there enough, then you always get a good deal on a recently new-used game

Now that my voice command to turn on the Xbone is working (recallibrated kinect and pronounced the word Xbox as Ex...Box - two separate words) I wonder why it doesn't turn the controller on.

When I say Xbox Turn Off the console and the controller turn off. What gives?

when you turn on your xbox it might be just to watch tv or do other things with a media remote/voice commands.
turning off any controllers when turning off the xbox is purely to save their batteries since you won't be using those till you turn it back on.

it's a sensible default behavior from a development angle i think. if it was told to turn on a controller, then one had to ask which controller? all of them? (if you have multiple).... etc.

related: the kinect also watches the controller and will turn it off if you are not using or holding it it, smarter/quicker than the 360 did

^ It should at least come on when you tell kinect to turn on console.

I only mentioned that the controller turns off with the console to illustrate that the reverse action should be doable.

If it behaved more like a gaming console, what you describe would not be the default. They could introduce a settings option to allow you to chose whether or not "Xbox On" turns on the controller just as they have the option for "Xbox Turn Off" to power down your home theater devices.

As long as you don't get the Wii U you will be fine.

PS4 will probably sell the best at least in the short term, especially internationally, but both of them are gonna be successful.

^^^I like the Xbox One a lot, it feeds my laziness (IE I navigated through Netflix entirely with voice the other day not because it's necessarily easier but because I didn't feel like getting up to find my controller). There are still some issues that I can't tell if they are system-related or game-related like FIFA just kicking you back out of the home screen occasionally and FIFA randomly disconnecting me and my friend. I mean, if you're not pretty convinced either way I'd probably wait a while and see how both consoles evolve.

You don't have to worry about getting sega saturn'd as long as you stay away from the wii u. X1 and PS4 are pretty much the same performance wise (yes nerds will scream 1080p, ddr5 etc).

I chose X1 because it simply does more. I'm growing up slowly and gone are the days where I want a game system that just games. Also voice commands are awesome. PS4 is "hardcore gaming focused" (LOL if you are hardcore go build a PC).

I dont have a PS4 so I wont comment on that console.

The X1 has a very high ceiling. It is a matter of whether or not Microsoft and game devs capitalize on potential. Voice commands have far surpassed my expectations.
