http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/24/xbox-one-used-game-rumor/

Quote :
"The stage lights had barely dimmed at the Xbox One event before the internet started tripping over itself with questions about how the second-hand market was expected to operate -- or if there was going to be one at all. Microsoft assured us there would be, but aside from whispers of a used game "activation fee" the finer details were kept under wraps. We may know a little more now, however, as MCV claims to have heard specifics from retailers who have been briefed by Redmond on the trade-in process. Allegedly, shops that wish to buy and sell a title will need to be hooked up to a Microsoft database so that access to the game can be removed from the previous owner's account and transferred to a new one. A retailer can sell the game for whatever it likes, but the system will ensure that a cut goes to publisher as well as Microsoft. It all sounds fairly logical, but who knows? The truth could be even more complicated."

http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/24/xbox-cloud-computing-gaming/

Quote :
"One of the Xbox launch's big reveals was that Microsoft added 300,000 servers to Xbox Live, and now GM Matt Booty has detailed to Ars Technica how that'll improve game play. He said the improved cloud architecture will speed up GPU- or CPU-heavy chores that aren't dependent on latency -- like lighting or cloth dynamics -- by pre-calculating them before applying them to a scene. To make that happen, the Xbox One server cloud will provide three virtual devices for "every Xbox one available in your living room." It'll be up to game developers to manage transitions between console-only and cloud assisted graphics, though, since the first few seconds of lighting in a new scene will need to be handled by the console before servers can take over. Of course, that means many titles may look better when you're online, but he added that you'll still be able to play if the internet is cut and "the game is going to have to intelligently handle that.""

that makes sense. the thing where someone else has to pay to activate the game on their account if you hand them the disc probably doesn't invalidate it on your account. meaning they've basically purchased a retail copy from Microsoft and used your disc to install it.

for private sales you probably sell it through xbox live for a price you set, Microsoft and the publisher take the cut, and it gets removed from your account and added to theirs. then they can either download it or use your disc to install it.

Microsoft should have either clarified it all at the event or not had the event. leaving important details out until e3 is stupid.

It's so weird, seemed like people rolled their eyes at Sony's PS4 presentation and them endlessly prattling on about "social features". Now everyone's like "OMG PS4 FTW" on all the message boards.

i'm 99% buying it day one unless the pricing goes off the charts. i thought the features and general concept of the new xbox sounded good. granted, some of the things people are complaining about make no difference to me. i don't remember the last time i tried to buy a used game, and i know good and well i won't be trying to play a game i have now once a new version comes out (halo, cod, gta, whatever). the farthest back i go is maybe one version (mw3 vs blops2 for example) and besides it's not like i have to throw my 360 in the garbage just because i got the xb1.

well if you're looking to play video games pc is obviously the only choice, but it could be that they flush out some of the media options + application possibilities on the xbone and it becomes a sw8 htpc.

I don't trust early price estimates... but it makes for fun chatter

Quote :
"When Microsoft's Xbox One goes on sale before the end of year, it should cost $399, $50 more than the Sony's PlayStation 4, likely to debut at the same time, according to estimates by Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter.

The analyst made his estimates in a research note prepared in advance of next week's E3 video game conference. He based those estimates on the cost of materials needed to build the consoles, taking into account speculation about the specifications for each box."

http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/license clears up a few things

Quote :
"Access your entire games library from any Xbox One—no discs required: After signing in and installing, you can play any of your games from any Xbox One because a digital copy of your game is stored on your console and in the cloud. So, for example, while you are logged in at your friend’s house, you can play your games."

Quote :
"Trade-in and resell your disc-based games: Today, some gamers choose to sell their old disc-based games back for cash and credit. We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers. Microsoft does not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers, or consumers for enabling transfer of these games. "

Quote :
"Give your games to friends: Xbox One is designed so game publishers can enable you to give your disc-based games to your friends. There are no fees charged as part of these transfers. There are two requirements: you can only give them to people who have been on your friends list for at least 30 days and each game can only be given once."

I shouldn't forget to mention these as well

Quote :
"In our role as a game publisher, Microsoft Studios will enable you to give your games to friends or trade in your Xbox One games at participating retailers. Third party publishers may opt in or out of supporting game resale and may set up business terms or transfer fees with retailers. Microsoft does not receive any compensation as part of this. In addition, third party publishers can enable you to give games to friends. Loaning or renting games won’t be available at launch, but we are exploring the possibilities with our partners.

As we move into this new generation of games and entertainment, from time to time, Microsoft may change its policies, terms, products and services to reflect modifications and improvements to our services, feedback from customers and our business partners or changes in our business priorities and business models or for other reasons. We may also cease to offer certain services or products for similar reasons."

Quote :
"Microsoft today unveiled plans to allow used games on its next game console, the Xbox One, ending speculation about fees associated with the process. "Microsoft does not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers, or consumers for enabling transfer of these games," a Q&A regarding Xbox One licensing fees reads. "We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers." There is an exception noted, as the above only applies to Microsoft-published games apparently:

"Third party publishers may opt in or out of supporting game resale and may set up business terms or transfer fees with retailers. Microsoft does not receive any compensation as part of this. In addition, third party publishers can enable you to give games to friends. Loaning or renting games won't be available at launch, but we are exploring the possibilities with our partners."
You'll also be able to give your games to friends, though you must be friends on Xbox Live for more than 30 days and "each game can only be given once." It's unclear if the game can be given away to subsequent people by the receiver.

There's also a piece detailing how the console's always online requirement will work, with a check-in needed once every 24 hours if you're on your home console (you'll only get one hour offline on a friend's console before getting booted). Beyond serving to check whether the game license you're using is official or not, Microsoft says the requirement will, "verify if system, application or game updates are needed and to see if you have acquired new games, or resold, traded in, or given your game to a friend." Sounds to us like a way to get around issues associated with not needing discs post-install to play games on the Xbox One. The piece also notes that, "Games that are designed to take advantage of the cloud may require a connection." There's no word on exceptions for military personnel or people who live in areas without internet -- the minimum suggested speed to maintain a connection is 1.5Mbps.

Finally, there's a piece about privacy which adds some interesting notes about the new, required Kinect. The "Xbox On" wake functionality can be disabled, and Microsoft assures that a variety of privacy settings will be available right from initial setup.

Update: When asked whether the online requirement would allow exceptions for military personnel or consumers in areas without stable internet, Microsoft told us, "The blog posts on Xbox Wire detail everything we can share today. We look forward to sharing more details in the months ahead." Not exactly a comforting answer if you're an Xbox gamer serving overseas."

^what he said. I spent a bit surfing /r/gaming and I'm all but convinced I'm getting a ps4. Was already leaning that way anyway because the Sony exclusives are more my thing. Kind of tired of FPS games. Loved the Drake series and Last of Us looks incredible, so if Naughty Dog keeps making PS exclusives, it's almost a no brainer for me.

Though, the multimedia aspect of the X1 looks INCREDIBLE.

the free games are nice since ive been a gold member since original xbox.

i prob won't buy it, especially at 500, but i am intrigued by the multimedia features.

i wasnt a pc fanboy at first, but theres so much free content with things like f2p mmo's and league of legends (and the like). it really appeals to my cheapness.
