I'm working far from home for 2 months this summer and although I don't need a car, it will be so much easier to have one, and I don't want to drive cross country.
Has anyone ever rented a car by the month? Is there a company that does it significantly cheaper than others? Is it worth it? 6/3/2013 6:59:44 PM |

I've heard that you can frequently get great deals renting through your credit card company. 6/3/2013 7:01:26 PM |

All of them do long term rental. If you don't need a car. Why not cab or bus places 6/3/2013 7:09:19 PM |

I'm going to be in the middle of nowhere, 30 miles to the nearest bus station. It means I can only leave when someone else is leaving, and that might be difficult to plan. I'm going to try it out without a car for at least the first week or so but I want to figure out options if I decide to go the rental path later. 6/3/2013 7:12:15 PM |

let me know what you find out, I am considering long term rentals myself because my new job is far, and my poor mazda can't hack that commute for long. 6/3/2013 7:16:27 PM |

i did a Navy school in Dahlgren, VA but the only place left to stay was in Fredericksburg, 30 miles away. it was in the middle of my Permanent Change Of Station, so I took my car, since I had to take it with me to San Diego.
drive your own car there. i doubt the gas to and from your current home to the job site will be more expensive than the car rental prices for 2 months. 6/3/2013 7:23:18 PM |

I did some math based on my car's average highway and the average gas price in the states I'd be traveling through and it would be $750 round trip. Add in 6 hotel rooms, $75 each if I'm lucky, and it's now at $1200.
Enterprise is $650 per month, plus $200 for roundtrip airfare. A $300 difference to not have to be on the road for 6 total days.
What would you choose to do?

well, i'd take $200 roundtrip airfare anytime. that's unheard of for a cross-country flight (which i'm assuming with 3 nights driving each way).

Santa Barbara, CA to The Middle of the Woods, New Hampshire
I would love to road trip if I wasn't travelling alone. Plus then I could share the gas and hotel costs and it would be the right decision hands down.

$98 standby tickets
I've flown standby every trip I've taken the past 2 years and have loved it.

I feel you, bdmazur. For me, seeing a few sights along the way is not worth $300 and 60+ tedious hours behind the wheel.]6/3/2013 9:30:21 PM |

Emerald club/Avis might be worth a few extra $ if you get free rentals out of it and plan to use them 6/3/2013 11:43:27 PM |
