All the Twc threads with TV/net were old so I was wanting to know what's the best thing if I'm moving and am thinking about putting RR turbo/HD-DVR box in my name. Have friends paying in the 95 range. Don't need the specialty channels. Called today and they priced it out at $115 and that only covered 12 months. Told them others paying 95 and was told different prices for different areas. And by different areas, this could mean across the street apparently. Any suggestions? PM mere as well. 6/5/2013 3:14:36 PM |

dont get TWC. We switched from TWC (were paying around $120 a month for cable and internet). Now We pay around $80 a month for DirecTV and ATT internet. We've got 3 months of HBO/Showtime/Max, the Genie DVR (can record up to six programs at a time and watch throughout house) and the NFL Sunday Ticket this year included.
Our internet isnt as fast as RR, so if thats a big priority for you then you may be able to find a faster internet service around. 6/5/2013 3:18:07 PM |

I pay about $103 per month, taxes included for RR, cable, and digital phone (wife insists that we have a house phone). My biggest complaint is that I only have one cable box/DVR for the whole house as they want to charge like $15-20/mo for extra boxes.
We don't need anymore than the one box we have as we really only watch TV in one room, but it'd be nice to have HD in our bedroom and guest bedroom. Oh well, I'll probably eventually go back to dish or directv as they are better values, but I don't really want a satellite dish on my property. 6/5/2013 3:50:04 PM |

Rflong, what speed internet do you have? That sounds like a decent deal to get internet/HD-DVR box/phone for $103. As I mentioned they quoted me at turbo speed and an HD-DVR cable box at 115 and that was for the first 12 months which of course didn't include phone.

^^ I think it is just the basic RR. We really only use our home computer for the internet, no streaming or anything so speed is not critical. Our HD package is pretty standard too but it includes all of the good channels most people watch.
The actual deal I got was an $89.99 triple play and the taxes/fees take it to $103. Call them up and tell them you have an ad for that $89.99 triple play and see if they'll work with you. That is what I did (granted this was in 2012). Make sure to tell them that it includes an HD receiver as they tried to screw me out of that too. 6/5/2013 5:05:49 PM |

I pay right at $100 a month for DirecTV (with Whole House DVR on 3 TVs) and Standard TWC internet.
TWC's Standard Internet is 15 Mbps now, which should be plenty fast for anything you need to do at home, and you can get it for 29.99 a mo. Turbo is $10 a mo. more, and you only get 5 more Mbps.
Regardless what you do, don't be scared to go with a contract. If they jack your rate after a year, you shouldn't have much of an issue getting it lowered if you talk to retentions.
I sold for TWC, and I can tell you first hand that they can't compete with DirecTV where video is concerned. But they definitely have the best internet offering. So my advice is to go elsewhere for the video, and go with TWC for the internet (and even phone if you want home phone).

I am being tempted to go back to TWC, we had them for internet, went and upgraded to the 30 mb down option, and still saw constant lag on streaming video. Swapped to DSL, and elt the services overlap for a month and found no lag with streaming on dsl. I miss the super fast speeds for downloads, jsut wish TWC did not throttle the crap out of netflix/amazon video. 6/11/2013 4:50:04 PM |

^ I have never had any lag issues streaming Netflix with my Standard TWC internet. However I do live out in the country, so there are very few people on my node.
If internet is your main concern, I would definitely caution against U-Verse unless you use them JUST for the internet. If you get TV and Internet through U-Verse, the bandwidth is shared. So if you are watching HD programming on 2 TVs, your internet will lag. On the flip side, if you are streaming HD on the internet, the TV picture can pixelate. U-Verse definitely has the cheaper WHDVR option though. 6/12/2013 10:47:15 AM |

I have had their standard for years.
My roommate and I stream different stuff at the same time and don't have lag issues (somtimes netflix at the same time, sometimes one on netflix another on amazon prime, etc.). We also use Xbox live at the same time with no issues. It may have just been your specific connection I guess. 3 hours on the phone with 6-7 different people. They tried to lie, steal, and cheat us as usual but we finally got to the point of scheduling a cancellation.... for 3 weeks out.
We also had a service call scheduled for tomorrow (both cable and internet our currently out) so I am going to see if that guy can just do the disconnect and take our shit. Then, I also signed up as new account holder (luckily they had my wife's maiden name on our old one) and scheduled a new install of just internet on Friday. Paying 34.99+ taxes and fees for 12 months, then it will probably double. I bought my own modem so that saves $5 per month.
July 30th (service call to fix what we just cancelled) Aug 2nd ("new" service installation) Aug 16th (disconnection of old service)
This is going to be a beautiful clusterfuck.

I'm guessing the disco date is 8/16 because you are already paid up through then and they don't want to have to credit you back money. When I canceled my DirecTV last year it was the same deal. Then they called back and said that was incorrect and we had to start a new account. They cancelled everything that day and I created another new account. Nobody had to come out or anything. So what's the consensus? TWC cost me $176 this last month, for one dvr, Internet (basic I guess), and a phone line we don't use. I also have the mlb package, but I figure by the time they disconnect it'll be pretty much over anyway. So uverse for Internet, and also tv or is satellite better for tv? I really have no complaints at all about TWC except the price.
It'd be nice to get the nfl package, but uverse looks cheaper. I'm guessing TWC won't give me any deals if I cancel to just Internet because I'm an existing customer and fuck me. 8/4/2013 3:50:40 PM |

You can cancel TWC, then wait 30 days and join as a new customer (or so they say). Or just switch it to your SO's name like we did.
We now just have internet for 34.99 (we own our modem, so no fee there) and I just found out you can simply plug the TVs directly into the cable outlet and get basic cable (included with internet, but not really advertised). Including some HD channels - the wife was very happy to discover this.
Combine that with smart TVs, videogame systems, chromecast, and NFL Sunday Ticket via Madden 25 and I am a happy motherfucker saving buckets of money over the next few years. 8/4/2013 3:58:20 PM |

I never thought I'd say this, but I am so glad to be a Comcast subscriber and not have to deal with TWC anymore.
They still do all the bait and switch shit than TWC and everyone else does, the same "promotions", etc. But the big difference is that Comcast customer service is the fucking tits.
Every problem I've ever had, with billing, technical, equipment, service calls, has been resolved PRONTO. I've never had to wait on hold for more than 5 minutes, never had problems getting through to tier 3 tech support for real technical issues, never had to do any haggling to get promotions. Service calls are never a hassle, the subcontractors are always cool as shit, and they have never dicked me around with pro-rated refunds or billing issues.
My service just ended a promotion taking me from $69/mo for 20/5mbps internet + extended HD service (I use a cablecard) to just over 100. It's very nice knowing it will only be a 10 minute phone call to drop it back down to either 59 or 60/mo for another 6-12 months. 8/4/2013 6:35:24 PM |

You'd be surprised.
When I cancelled cable last week on the phone, the woman told me that since my "bundled rate" wasn't going to expire until next month, I'd have to pay $58 for my standard internet this month and then call back in on the 25th.
But I mentioned the pricing issue (that I'd had the service for a few years, but wouldn't hesitate to go somewhere else if I could get it cheaper) when I dropped off my cable box on Saturday and the woman just gave me $34.99 for 12 months with no hesitation. Just be friendly and it doesn't hurt to ask.
Quote : | "I just found out you can simply plug the TVs directly into the cable outlet and get basic cable (included with internet, but not really advertised)" |
I took my cable box back on Saturday to officially "cancel" and I did notice today that I still have basic cable. I only tried it because I read somewhere on TWW that this was the case. Are we supposed to be getting basic cable? Or is it just because TWC hasn't sent somebody to fix the issue? When I logged on to my account, it said I had a service appointment schedule for August 6th, 12:01 am to 11:59 pm and I have no idea what that's about. I'm just wondering if that's when it's scheduled for them to come turn the cable filter on or whatever.

If you get just internet service from any cable provider, they are supposed to send out a tech to install a simple inline line filter to block the basic cable range. But if you're an existing customer just downgrading service, many times they won't bother with a service call to do it.
I've had "free cable" for years at some places with this loophole. If you ever have a service call, or there's one for your neighbors, its likely they will put the filter on as part of the call. If your "free" cable ever goes away, you can always go out to the line and remove the filter, replace it with a simple bridge connector and play dumb about it. 8/4/2013 10:25:42 PM |

You actually don't even need to wait 30 days, it's 24 hours. It's called a "Save", and when I worked at TWC I did them all the time. I'd have my customer cancel, then their name would pop up on my save list the next day. At that point I could offer them all the promos that new customers can get. We used to even be able to offer a $200 Visa Gift Card to saves, but TWC put a stop to that pretty quick once all the reps started taking advantage of it.
But it's just like everything else with TWC, it all depends on talking to the right person. I'd recommend going to the front counter. Usually there are sales reps in the back, and the front counter clerk will probably go back there and grab one for you.

But I took some advice I found here a while back, after they had raised my triple play bundle to 140 bucks from 99 ... and didnt send me a notification ... pissed me off ...
Anyhow ... called and gave them the chance to give me a better rate on just Full HD DVR/Turbo Internet, no phone. The best they could do was "115" at that time. So I outright canceled, told them to make the effective date 1 week from that day.
They called back that afternoon, and offered me $82 for that combo, after all taxes and fees, and promised it would never change.... ever. Still going on $82 today ... hard to let go at that price. 8/5/2013 9:33:49 AM |

^ Yep, you got "saved"
TWC makes a good portion of their profit on lease fees (boxes and modems) and the older customers that will pay the increase just because they are scared of change. So typically if you threaten to cancel, they will take the hit on the service side so they can continue to collect the fees. You just have to be persistent and patient, but it pays off.
I mean think about it, you pay $10/mo per box lease. Most of those boxes are old and have long since been paid for. In fact, TWC is pretty notorious for putting outdated equipment in customers' homes but still charging a premium for it. I think the modem fee now is $5/mo, and $10 if you are dumb enough to pay for their wireless networking. That's all pure profit.

I need some advice on my TV & internet packaging. I currently have DirecTV and AT&T DSL, which is somewhat "bundled". However it's been over a year so any discounted rate I was getting for the DSL ($24.95) has ended and now it's $51/month.
Currently my DirecTV bill is $103/month. That's for the lowest channel package, plus HBO ($17.99), and the $10 fee for HD and a $10 fee for the DVR. I only have one box in the entire house. I'm also under contract with DirecTV (but I think that ends within 6 months or so). As an aside I've been a DirecTV customer for over 3 years.
I'm not very happy to be paying around $150 for my internet/TV service. Any suggestions? (and no, U-verse is not available in my neighborhood). 8/5/2013 10:08:40 AM |

^^ broadcast are the channels you get just by plugging directly into the wall , pretty much everything you can get over-the-air + News 14. Broadcast should only cost $10-$12 per month, or possibly free if you have internet and they don't put the trap on the line (or you remove it, WHICH IS ILLEGAL!!!!! lol).
Basic TV requires a box (which you lease) and delivers about 75 channels: Broadcast + popular cable channels (ESPN, Discovery, Food Network, etc.). The old Basic (now called Broadcast) service from TWC used to include all these channels, but they have been converting all of them to digital. So now they either require a Digital Adapter (which TWC was giving away for free to grandfathered Basic customers) or a box. All new customers are required to have a box. I am assuming you have the Digital Adapter if you are still getting all of those channels without a box.
Digital cable is like 280 channels.

Well first, if you are willing to do auto-draft they will drop the $10 fee for HD. And since you have been a customer that long with DirecTV and only have about 6 months left, I'd call and threaten to cancel. Their cancellation fee is $20 per month remaining on the contract, and they're giving away $200 gift cards now to new customers. I'm pretty positive they would put you on the current promotion if you sign another 2 year contract. I'd imagine you could cut your DirecTV bill in half, at least for the next 12 months. Be persistent.

That digital converter thing only affected a few channels (one I can think of is VH1 Classic, but there were a handful of others). Willing to bet if you flipped it to channel 65 right now it works, but 66 doesn't, and then you get a few more channels after that up to 70ish.
So there's the broadcast which is the locals + News14. Then there's basic minus that digital converter thing that TWC handed out which is basically the basic package minus 5-10 channels. Then basic with the converter including those channels.
If you're getting basic minus a handful of those digital converter required channels, they more than likely just forgot to turn it off when you canceled. It happened to me like that awhile back. Cable was turned off on 2 out of 3 outlets and worked on the other one. 8/5/2013 11:34:27 AM |
