I'm looking to by bedroom furniture for the new house I'm moving into and was hoping for some advice. Where do you recommend shopping, money saving tips, and any general information would be helpful. 6/5/2013 4:09:17 PM |

Perfect for a white person, or a black person.
Seriously though, if you're renting a place or only gonna be a while just get the cheapest shit you can find, a frame and a couple nightstands will go for nothing. Otherwise spend the money to get some nice furniture pieces that will look good pretty much anywhere and that will last you forever. 6/5/2013 4:25:55 PM |

I wish I would have looked for stuff on craigslist and/or estate sales before giving my new wife free reign to buy whatever furniture she wanted for our bedroom/office.
I'm not sure on the odds of success at finding quality stuff but it wouldn't hurt to try. 6/5/2013 4:30:53 PM |

Ya been trying to play Craigslist slots but it'd be hard to find quality matching pieces.
And yea bedframes/headboards are stupid expensive for anything halfway decent. 6/5/2013 4:40:18 PM |

i got a complete set for dirt cheap on craigslist. it was in great shape. headboard/footboard, 2 nightstands, dresser with mirror, 2 lamps. the trick is to know what you want and jump on it as soon as you find it. i had to drive a couple hours, but it was worth it. 6/5/2013 7:02:43 PM |

IMHO This is about the worst thing you can do. When you're still in the state that you're moving around or changing places this stuff will break down and its overpriced. In general avoid midrange furniture. Either get something that you don't give a shit about and is cheap or spend on something that will last a long while. Shitty R2G stuff will look lousy in a nice place and you'll have to replace it at some point.
My advice is to go cheap or high range. depending on where you are at in life. If you're buying in the high range shop outlets and don't hesitate to negotiate. Any place that isn't willing to at least hear offers on some of their stuff is probably not worth your time in this state.
General Rules: Anything wood feel free to buy used, will have good character and can be refinished if necessary. Avoid buying anything with any sort of heavy upholstery used (couches, mattresses, recliners). Good upholstered stuff is double stitched and has at least 6 stitches per inch or more typically. Dark hardwoods will work about anywhere, avoid whites or pure blacks in general since these will be harder to match to new rooms.6/5/2013 7:43:42 PM |

I've become a bit of a furniture snob and even I have found lots of nice vintage pieces on craigslist, local thrift stores, consignment shops, flea markets, and general boutique stores that focus on vintage items. Not all of our furniture is like that but we have founds lots of items through those avenues and they are all much cheaper than anything of their quality new and in many case even cheaper places like Rooms To Go even though the pieces we got are of MUCH higher quality. It certainly takes some patience but it has been worth it to us.
I definitely wouldn't worry about everything matching. I prefer it not to and think it looks much better (if you care about that).
For new items, in general, I am a fan of IKEA. Not all items are great there and they are definitely cheap, but they have some cool pieces and we have had lots of luck with the items we do have. A couple of my favorite (but not cheap) places are Crate & Barrel and Room & Board. West Elm and CB2 are less pricey versions of those two stores as well.
Hard to know what to recommend without knowing your style.

i was going to recommend the hemnes line at ikea for the best value...but it looks like they're not made of solid wood anymore 6/6/2013 10:47:19 AM |

^^ I guess the one in our dining room is more of an old record player that we turned into a credenza. The one upstairs is definitely a buffet/credenza but it is planned for the entertainment center in our bonus room reno.
^ The Tarva series has similar lines, is solid wood, and comes completely unfinished and obviously unassembled. It is nice because it gives you the opportunity to do any kind of stain and paint (or combination thereof) very easily: minimum prep and all the pieces are already separate. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10221421/ I think the MANDAL is also solid wood frame. Obviously "solid wood" from them is a little different, because even though the pieces are solid wood, the construction isn't AS good when you are screwing stuff together yourself.
For the price though, you can't beat IKEA if you are wanting new pieces and not wanting to spend a lot of money. As long as you don't go and fill your house with nothing but IKEA pieces they look nice. (IOW, they look nicer when sprinkled in with more high-end pieces)
We have a Tarva we painted and stained in our downstairs guest bedroom. We also have 2 Nyvoll dressers upstairs.

I ended up going with a couch and loveseat from rooms to go six years ago, mainly due to price, color, time frame, and I'm still pleased with the condition they are in. Granted I haven't moved/changed places since then so ymmv.6/7/2013 3:26:40 PM |

build it imo. headboard and night stand especially is very easy to craft something nice looking if you're even half way handy with wood. 6/7/2013 10:01:26 PM |

I got my metal frame from overstock and it's held up well over the last 6 years and several moves. Always wanted a canopy bed as a kid so it made me happy. Should get an actual canopy cover for it.
lol, looks like they still sell it too: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Excel-Queen-size-Canopy-Bed/2039800/product.html
