In light of recent news,

http://news.yahoo.com/us-declassifies-phone-program-details-uproar-071508507.html

the question of whether Google shares data from NCSU g-mail with the government came to my mind. State's policy book clearly says Google neither owns nor shares our data, however then refers to Google's privacy pages.

One link is specific to Google Education Apps that says it does not share with other organizations; but does this apply to the federal government?

http://www.google.com/enterprise/apps/education/benefits.html

If so, I think a discussion specific to the University's choice of e-mail client would be necessary.

Yes, all google email is compromised. You should share your concerns with the chancellor, though I doubt the university is even competent enough to run their own email servers anymore.

Google is the least of your worries. On campus you're a second class citizen, and there's every reason to suspect that the university will turn over transcript information, internet logs and medical records to the government if they so much as ask nicely. I think campus police can already pull up your transcript in their car. In the case of campus internet they likely already have a backdoor installed. Most terrorists are college aged and universities house sensitive materials, after all.

What's the time limit when they can access your remotely stored emails without a warrant, 6 months? That needs to change, the idea that an email has been abandoned if left on a server that long doesn't make sense in 2013.

You're under the assumption that it's your email. It's a university run asset. Anything in the email account they provide to you is theirs whether you like it or not.

Now student data is subject to various privacy laws. I don't know how they affect student email. For faculty and staff, their emails are considered public record.

if you are not doing anything crime/terrorism-related, you have nothing to hide, right?

In America, just about everything anyone does can be construed as a crime.

To illustrate that:

After watching that, I couldn't help but remember all the things I've unnecessarily told police in my life

What if the government thinks your financial transactions look odd—even if you've done nothing wrong—and freezes your accounts? What if the government doesn't protect your information with adequate security, and an identity thief obtains it and uses it to defraud you? Even if you have nothing to hide, the government can cause you a lot of harm.

Bullshit. Manning is NOT a whistleblower, no matter how much people want to believe otherwise.

^ How is Bradley Manning not a whistleblower? He exposed abuses and war crimes.

No he didn't. he didn't expose jack shit. he just downloaded a bunch of classified documents and posted them, shotgun style, to Wikileaks. Please explain to me how releasing a report about how private Schmoe taking a dump in the latrine in any way exposed war crimes.
