Today from the college basketball bribery trial government witness Marty Blazer said between 2010-14 he paid from several hundred to several thousand dollars to FOOTBALL players from:

Pitt

Hakim Nicks, most notably. Who was also academically ineligible that same season...amongst others.

UNC's ROI on this football cheating is pretty hilariously low. a ton of cheating for mostly 6 to 8 win seasons.

I think most of what came out today was old news, but good to see it reconfirmed either way.

Well, it came out yesterday so it's definitely old.

Also it's not new. The NCAA has already punished them for the stuff Blazer was involved in. They already knew about that.

A couple of quotes from IC for you to LYFAO...

Quote :
"
(In reference to Duke)We beat them twice. They failed to win a championship. If they were paid, so what? This is not a thing we would do. Our own integrity is what matters. Let it go."

Quote :
"
We are mentioned in that article too. I do think it is of the way we were included though - "UNC is UNC".

Did that mean we are different? Maybe Roy doesn't participate, but boosters do?

I believe that Roy runs one of the cleanest programs in all of college basketball. Is he squeaky clean (beyond reproach)? Doubtful, but that doesn't mean he isn't the cleanest coach in all of college basketball either.

I will go to my grave being certain that Roy (& Dean) are significantly cleaner than k. All the circumstantial evidence supports my belief."

Quote :
"
Yep def interesting that it was worded like that. Of course, the other person (forget the name) who was on the other end of this call said in court that he took that statement to mean that UNC is willing to pay as well. Of course that was just his interpretation. I just can’t see it based on the recruiting the last several years. I’m just trying to wait to see how this all shakes out."

I just can't....

It’s amazing how they maintain that “we’re above this” approach after the academic scandal and everything that came out. It’s really amazing.

some people have their kids.

some people take pride in their jobs/professional work

some have hunting/fishing/hobbies

In other words, most people have some outlet in their life that is #1 and that they base their identity around. In most cases these are things that they themselves built and control. But theres a slice of UNC fans who build it around a basketball program. One that they have no direct control over so when shit gets stinky... all they have is justifications and blind defense... otherwise to admit that UNC is stinky, would be to admit that their lives are built around a basketball team that is not unique but in fact just the same as the rest of the programs they have come to look down on.

UNC isn't even involved in the newest scandal.

It's far more likely NCSU is about to get sanctions than UNC is and that makes me

only 8 schools have won more bball titles than State. but I wouldn't expect you to understand having other historically great programs in your own state.

back when i had football season tickets he bought my tix for the 2009 opener vs. South Caroline from me. seemed like a nice guy when he picked them up. he also saved me from attending one of the most disappointing season openers I can remember. maybe that's why he's kinda bitter about nc state sports?

Because it's actually fascinating to watch a random person with no reason to be on this site show up every once in a while and try to act superior. Most people have better things to do...like ANYTHING ELSE...but not him, so just let him enjoy himself.

https://abc11.com/education/hero-of-unc-scandal-speaks-at-dc-forum-on-paying-college-athletes/5419896/

Quote :
"

Thursday's forum on Capitol Hill was not solely about UNC, but the woman who blew the whistle on the academic scandal here was hailed as a hero for shining a huge spotlight on what one U.S. senator is calling a civil rights crisis.

Far from the hot glare she once faced in Chapel Hill, Mary Willingham now teaches Chicago middle schoolers to read. On Capitol Hill, she shared the irony of her current job and the one she had at Carolina.

"I teach middle school students to read now. It's the joy of my life," she told the crowd. "When I went to the University of North Carolina as a learning specialist, I didn't expect to have to teach kids to read, because those kids were a lot older."

The woman who helped blow the whistle on the academic fraud scandal at UNC was hailed as a hero on Capitol Hill Thursday at a forum on whether athletic scholarship players are being cheated academically and financially.

Willingham helped lift the veil on a two-decade old system of bogus classes for UNC athletes. At the forum she shared story after story of Carolina players, young men and women, she tutored, admitted to UNC on athletic scholarships but who couldn't read letters, who were unable to write a sentence.

"One of my students that comes to mind wanted to be a business major. She needed to learn to read first. She needed glasses first. That was a problem for the NCAA because it was something that they might not provide," Willingham said.

In his newly-released report, 'Madness Inc.,' Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy detailed what he sees as the exploitation in major college sports. He's lobbying to compensate players financially in what he cites as a $14 billion industry where major schools operate like the pros but for economic reasons refer to the workers as amateurs.

"The majority of those athletes are black athletes and the majority of the adults making money off those athletes are white," Murphy said. "And I couldn't help but notice that inside this sport that I love so much was a festering civil rights crisis."

The NCAA says its "rules prioritize both academics and athletics ... Allowing student-athletes to be paid for athletics performance would undermine the balance between the two."

But at the forum in Washington panelists argued the current system of paying players with an education rather than cash simply cheats them twice.

"If we're going to promise students a real education than we must absolutely deliver a real education in the very least," Willingham said.

The NCAA is currently considering a move to allow athletes to profit from the use of their names or likeness on things like jerseys or video games. Murphy said he's pleased with that, but says he will consider introducing legislation if the NCAA remains slow to act.

I’m guessing the fact that UNC players were literally illiterate, yet eligible to compete in athletics for several decades.

Now UNC fans can just say “DSJr got $40k!”

what's the tl;dr for this latest UNC thing, they were prescribing adderall to athletes and using them for concussion research without disclosing it?

I think less the idea of the impact on concussion research than the idea that these were false diagnoses which allows you extra academic support and to take what would otherwise be a banned substance. The research angle was what revealed this discrepancy.

That said, we were on this like 4 years ago already

I do not subscribe to The Athletic, so have not read the article. But from twitter, it appears this is a summary:

Quote :
"Fabricated diagnoses of learning disabilities have been at the center of the scandal from the beginning. The diagnosis allowed athletes to fulfill their general education math requirement by taking a foreign language, incidentally taught by a secretary."

Those cheating cheaters are going to get away with it too.
