Roy gets a new contract just as the NOA is served...Seems to me like someone is prepping for a high pension and hush money.

Untouchable at that point.

The more I think about this "Kraken" that someone on PP holds, I actually think its a copy of every transcript and possibly every email from UNC, all the way back about this...

Someone would have access to that sort of thing and be smart enough to save a copy of all the files.

That would be a huge blow to the face of the NCAA...couldn't someone essentially take the NCAA to court?

^ I don't know, at the end of the day no one really cared about Julius Peppers' transcript. (You're also breaking federal law then.)

The people who claim there is a Kraken are the same posters who have been reliably correct about pretty much all of the events surrounding the scandal across the last 5 years. They also allege there is more than one co-conspirator with UNC that has been burned in this, that they are extremely upset they've been burned, and may not end up staying on the reservation until this blows over. There is a very real possibility of escalation before all the dust settles.

Normally we'd rightly take all this with a grain of salt, but considering the sources I'm more inclined than not to believe the rumors.

I would absolutely love it if UNC tried to throw Women's Basketball under the bus in an attempt to save face, and instead have a shitshow of a Title IX lawsuit result when additional information surfaces.

^^^^Don't read too far into the new contract regarding "hush money". I would say its more probable that UNC is trying to keep a strong exterior for current recruits to say "Everything is fine. Nothing is ruined." They are trying to stop the mass exodus of recruits until the window officially closes. They want this last good season.

And despite what people say, it _is_ much more difficult for the NCAA to throw the book at a #1 seed (if they are, in fact, that good) in the middle of the season. Being super-strong this year after they have gone "clean" could also reduce penalties moving forward if they are lenient on this season. That's just the way it goes, unfortunately.

FYI, the SACS Board (UNC's accreditation agency) will release their findings on North Carolina's academic fraud Thursday.

At most, all they do is take accreditation away from the AFAM department, right?

I did not think they could remove accreditation from an individual major. I thought it had to be done at the University level. Also, while AFAM is the targeted major for most of the reports, a lot of PHI courses were also implicated but did not get the same exposure at the department level. Hopefully SACS takes that into consideration.

Peppers' transcript was somewhat important in that he had a cumulative 1.8 GPA and never missed a down. It showed how to scheme the NCAA and meet minimum thresholds while still not having a 2.0, which I thought was what you needed to even stay in college, he probably got F's his Spring semester of his final year which brought it down below 2.0. It also showed he got D's or failed darn near everything that wasn't AFAM. Peppers wasn't on the 05 or 09 teams MBB team, so to a certain extent, his transcript has limitations in terms of punishment.

With regards to FERPA, from what I've read and discussed with others, the penalty can only be taken out at the university level if something is illegally released. Peppers cant/couldn't sue the IT halfwit that posted his transcript on UNC's server. He can only sue UNC as an institution over FERPA. What did Peppers do, well he cut a check for 250 grand to UNC weeks after his transcript surfaced. He isn't having any consultations with FERPA attorneys. If you look up FERPA, very few times have penalties been levied. The jargon and wording of the law makes it very ambiguous. And I think guys like Sean May, Hansbrough, and convicted felon Ray Felton have other things to worry about. Haven't seen any of them release their transcript on their own to hush the doubters. They sure aren't going to court if they ever did get released either.

The NCAA, however, can get their hands on any and all of them, if they choose, which no one knows if they have. The fact that they have or haven't would tell you all you need to know as to which side of the fence they are currently on. That's why McCants' admission was a big deal, regardless of how you view his personal life. In Rasheed Wallace's words, "transcript don't lie"

Side note, whatever Willingham wants to come forth with, in terms of transcripts, I'm sure she will redact names and probably release more than 100 of them which would make it nearly impossible to identify who they are. Just that they would be revenue athletes. That's all a hypothetical and I don't even think she'd do it. Nonetheless, UNC wants no part of her, and neither do their former athletes in a courtroom. FERPA is essentially toothless if it actually even came down to it.

I know its UNC and everything, but I'm still at a loss as to how McCants has provided his transcripts, shown that he would not have been eligible to play on the 2005 team if it had not been for the sham AFAM classes, and yet its still a question as to if any banners will ever come down. Absolutely insane.

Didn't he provide them to ESPN? Pretty sure during their OTL segment the classes he 'took' and his actual grades were shown from his transcripts.

What you have described is what UNC's PR firm has been tasked with as far a muddying the waters. In terms of eligibility, it doesn't matter who knew what and when they knew it. If a player takes part in something that compromises his eligibility, the NCAA is supposed to look into it, and then rule. If the player is ineligible, the NCAA is supposed to pinpoint that date and vacate everything after that. The NCAA and UNC had no problem agreeing to that with football for Hakeem Nicks and Marvin Austin.

The problem is that the UNC media lapdogs (mostly local outside of the NandO) have eaten this up from UNC's PR firm's talking points. It doesn't matter who knew what and when with regards to eligibility, nor who concocted the scheme. If a player is ineligible, from that date on, wins and awards should be vacated. If Mother Theresa was the Chancellor, Princess Diana was the Athletic Director, and Ghandi was the basketball coach, what Rashad McCants was involved in would still cause him to be ineligible, even if Rashad McCants was the mastermind (which he wasn't).

OR, you could take UNC's stance that McCants is lying: he did go to class, it had a syllabus/syllabi, and he did write his own papers, and he did make Dean's List legitimately <snicker> after two F's Fall semester. What a turnaround, a complete miracle! An academic phenomenon! Now, where are all of the faculty who were supposed to be in charge of these "independent studies" courses for McCants in the Spring 2005. But more to the point, McCants was ineligible well before the Spring 2005, he took 18 AFAM classes out of his entire 28 credits and said they were "mostly bogus." UNC's PR Firm has magically decided that he was an exceptional student through 2004 and that anything in 2005 has no effect on his eligibility, again a ludicrous fallacy.

Again, UNC's PR firm has successfully convinced highly respected members of the media (including John Saunders) that eligibility is tied to who knew what and when. It is not, eligibility is as black and white as it gets according to the NCAA.

question is, did everyone else do it for 18 years?

I think not.

using a scheme involving everyone from tutors to administrators?

I think not.

that can be connected to multiple National Championships?

I think not.

by a bunch of bleeding heart liberals who would rather choke on their own cocks than drop two banners?

I think not.

when in the midst of receiving their NOA had still imposed no punishments or even apologized for any of it?

I think not.

As others have said, it creates the illusion of stability and 'all is normal' in the program as to not scare recruits.

It's for recruiting, and possibly as a golden parachute for Roy if when the shit finally hits the fan.

They can't get anyone to commit that's at the level of talent they expect themselves to be able to pull. Recruits aren't as dumb to this as they used to be, and every other coach out there recruiting is saying, "UNC may tell you they're fine, but are you really willing to bet your future on them telling the truth? Here, look at this mountain of evidence that proves they are actually not fine."

As for the parachute; there's a good chance Roy will want to hang it up if the basketball program gets hammered, and what better way to say Thank You than inflating his severance package now before this all gets extremely ugly?

I agree it is trying to create an illusion of stability, but it is also a slap in the face to the NCAA/COI (imo). They could have easily held off on announcing this, instead they do it right after the NOA is released.

Yep, completely agree. Again back to the PR, the hubris, the protection of the image of the university.

In their own camp they get nothing but good press from this, even if Roy does get forced out.

Probably never. If we accept that they have legit info they also claim it's too damaging and would hurt others as well. Sounds like bullshit. And if it would hurt others, if you're serious about "fixing" rampant corruption and a broken system, so be it; they'll just get hurt.

^ Possibly pissing off/embarrassing faculty enough where they'll grow a sack, stand up, and try to do something for a change.

Only problem is even if they go into full revolt, the administration is so large and powerful it wouldn't mean anything.

That's just off the top of my head. I really have no idea

Too bad SACS doesnt have the authority to basically say we dont care what the NCAA says is obvioulsy this was an academic scam made specifically to help out athletics. You can either choose to shut down your athletics program since your protection over that has caused you to lose all integrity involving academics, or we can pull your accredidation and let you enjoy your sports teams since those seem so much more important to you.

^^^yeah other than maybe a multi-year probation period or something. i never expected SACS to do anything - tbh, a probation is more than i thought would come of their investigation. they were never gonna pull the school's accreditation. i figured there'd be no punishment just an official reprimand which is basically what happened.

Yeah, as someone who holds a degree from UNC, I'm not a big fan of the threat of losing accreditation. Limit it to sports and those who actually engaged in fraud for discounting degrees.
