Definitely a spider.

It's probably a wolf spider. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolf_spider) No, it's not dangerous. It'll bite if you provoke it, but it's not much worse than a mosquito, horse fly, tick, etc. It was just eating bugs and killing other spiders in the area that you found it before you put it in that ziplock bag.

The dangerous spider you're looking for is the brown recluse...This is not one.

I didn't kill it, my wife did. I was at work. It was in the house, my wife saw it crawl across my son.

this appeared a lot bigger than it actually probably is, body (diameter) was probably about the size of a quarter.

^it is very difficult to really tell anything about it from this angle. A dorsal view that is not blurry as close up as possible is best.

what is the locality of the spider?

If the spider is not venomous, does it just scare its prey to death?

I was under the impression that something like nearly all spiders were venomous, only a handful actually lack venom glands. I'm assuming what you mean is that their bite is harmless to humans?

that was my understanding, as well

i would assume the ones without venom capture prey in silk, wrap it up, and eat it the same way (though perhaps with more mechanical actions than the venomous spiders)

I remember seeing black widows all over the damn place while I was out at Lake Raleigh Woods. Seemed like they really liked the bases of the pine trees. It's not like they're rare, but everyone shits themselves when they encounter one, because it just so happens that whenever one is encountered, someone almost touched it. It's the same goddamn thing with snakes...they always look like a copperhead and it was slithering open-mouthed with venom oozing from the fangs, heading straight for the neighbor's baby, dog, goldfish, whatever...

- does it have 8-legs? (Y/N)
- if "Y", then kill.



I still have a hard time identifying the brown recluse; basically all somewhat spindly & brown spiders are recluse to me..... I know: Black widow, wolf spider, writing spider, brown spider, 'house spider'


but srsly, after seeing many webs, one can easily identify the mess of a widow's web even without the thing present. (note pic above)

My in-laws had some huge garden spider in their yard. I took a pic, but there's no scale to it. Body was prob 2.5" tip to tip.


Still tho, in my life, number of spiders bigger than my shoe=zero.

^^ it would really help if you had taken the photo from the other side. My spider identifying relies on the number of eyes and markings on the dorsal side.

were you able to estimate the size? under an inch?

I threw him over the fence last night but he didn't have much in the way of markings on the top side. With legs he was definitely bigger than an inch. I bet the body was an inch or so.

with that info I would say that it is not a male or female black widow then. A male black widow is basically harmless except that it means that there is probably a female and babies, but again that does not appear to be a black widow.

I don't think it was venomous, but I could be wrong. Better safe than sorry I suppose! Beyond that I have no idea what that spider is.

I looked at http://www.spiders.us/species/filter/north-carolina/ but the default pictures looked nothing like it. But many of the specimens in the More Pictures look exactly like it.
