I just bought a second n150 Netgear router, and I am attempting to set it up as a repeater. I found a handy video showing how to set it up, but apparently the repeating function doesn't allow us to use the PSK security. When I go into the router, I don't see an option for WEP, but that may be because of Netgear's WPS thing.

My problem is knowing if it is okay to turn off the WPS, but then I have never set up a WEP key before, so I am not really sure how to do that.

Put ddwrt on it if you can, I just put it on my WRT54G, works like a charm.

yep, definitely go with dd-wrt. I used it to use a WRT54G behind the TV/PS3/etc with my existing wireless network. No matter what router you're using, there's bound to be setup instructions for you.

Ok so I spent hours today trying the set up an old wrt54g as a repeater. I installed dd-wrt and then followed instructions on various sites and videos. I could never get it to connect to the Internet on my refer router wrt54g2 (not on dd-wrt, but don't think it matters?)

Anyone have screenshots of the settings? I can post them maybe tomorrow of my setup. Really frustrating bc I think I pretty good at this tech stuff, but never got it to work.

These are the instructions I used and it works like a charm. Start with no security and then once you get it working you can enable the security. Make sure you follow every step, every reboot is important.

repeater and extender are the same thing...they simply take the signal (coming or going) and pass it along (at reduced throughput, mind you)

a repeater/bridge does that, as well, but also allows hardware connections (via the ethernet ports) to connect to the network (in this case, wirelessly) without being connected directly to the router

so if you just want to get a wireless signal to go farther, a repeater/extender is all you need...if you have your internet connected to your wireless router in one room but have a computer or computers in another that don't have their own wireless adapters, you could connect all of those to repeater/bridge and it would (mostly) be like they were hardwired to the router

I appreciate the assistance. I am sure the installation of ddwrt is straight forward enough, but I didn't want to risk messing anything up and bricking the router. I just went with a wifi range extender, and it seems to work just fine. Thank you guys.
