Quote : | "The state's Alcohol Law Enforcement arm is making some hard choices after state lawmakers cut the agency's budget by 20 percent.
The loss of $1.75 million from a total ALE budget of about $10 million will almost certainly mean reduced inspections of those who sell tobacco, lottery tickets and booze and fewer investigations of suspected gambling operations and other crimes. ALE's 83 field agents have worked with local, state and federal law enforcement to provide a variety of support functions. They recently helped Durham police round up probation violators.
But Jim Gardner, chairman of the Alcohol Beverage Control Commission, says the budget cuts mean fewer agents on the street and stretch those who remain too thin.
"They just simply don't have the manpower to handle what's been put on them," he said.
Gardner estimated the cut would cost 20 agent positions of a total 110.
"I think the No. 1 responsibility of government is to protect the people. And the one place you do not want to cut, as far as I'm concerned, pertains to law and order," he said.
Beyond law enforcement, the agency's ability to educate the public about the dangers of controlled substances and run programs such as those that prevent underage drinking will also suffer, Gardner said.
A legislative source told WRAL that lawmakers would like to see ALE focus more on alcohol enforcement and less on other investigative activities.
ALE director Greg Baker said, "The mandated reductions will severely limit ALE in carrying out its mission."" |

How about the administrators take a pay cut, instead of cutting out the bottom and complaining that it will make the people work sooo much harder? 8/13/2013 7:15:30 PM |

The ALE does not do any work anyway. Ever see them out directing traffic when it snows or after a tornado??? Ever hear of a heroic ALE agent saving a life??? They hang around grocery store parking lots and bars being douchebags. 8/13/2013 7:24:14 PM |

Most local ABC boards or Cities have a ABC Law Enforcement; it seems in the last couple of years the ALE has tried to redefine themselves as the investigative arm of DPS and that starts to step on the toes of other agencies that already focus on those tasks. Just an agency of redundancy.
They also seem to miss out on a lot of top quality candidates because of an extremely low starting pay and I know of a bunch of ALE agents who have jumped ship or are manning the lift rafts. Guess I should have bought one of those ALE Kimbers they traded in, shit is could become a collectors piece. 8/13/2013 9:15:07 PM |

Follow up question should have been "prove with numbers how you protect people in ways that normal police officers don't do."8/13/2013 10:36:24 PM |

Just think what could be done with the remaining 8.25 million budget. I thought Pat McRory was going to do away with government waste. 8/13/2013 10:51:14 PM |

Its really time to start thinking about a State Police agency like most other states already do. I work for a very specialized State agency and outside of a few things that only we have authority over, the bulk of our work is/can be done at the local level and at a much more effective rate. /State Government. 8/14/2013 6:49:34 AM |

This.
The only time i've dealt with A.L.E. was when we were driving to a club downtown (sober) and they stopped us for no reason to see if we were drinking & driving.8/14/2013 11:02:30 AM |

Or the one where they decided every agent needs an automatic weapon.
Or the custom order Kimber pistols for each agent that were not reliable as LEO weapons. 8/14/2013 11:21:21 AM |

chinga la ALE
Only thing they're good for is harassment, wasting money on new guns, and losing said new guns. ALE serves no purpose at all as nearly every other LEA can do/enforce what ALE does. We don't need a special beer police, just like we don't need a special drunk store. 8/14/2013 12:04:37 PM |

man fuck the ale. i'm glad they are being canceled. these people have nothing better to do than to sit there and wait for people to do stuff THEY DETERMINE to be illegal. For example i was sitting in my car and my roommate needed to get beer so i stopped at the store so he could get us some. so i turn into the food lion parking lot and drop him off at the door and he goes in and gets the beer and since i was underage i stayed in the car while he went into the store to get his beer. well he comes back with 2 cases and just gets in the car and i drive off and we go back to the apartment. well this pervert (or i guess we thought was a pervert... probably was looking back) kept following us so we drove around the block a few times but then eventually went back to the apartment. Well i go in and idnd't even carry any of the beer and he brought it in. then he realized he needed something and went to HIS car and left to go back to the store. THE FUCKING ALE PULLS HIM OVER AND GIVES HIMS A TICKET FOR BRINGING BEER INTO HIS OWN APARTMENT AND GIVES ME A TICKET FOR POSESSION even though i didn't even touch any of the beer in public or even inside. 8/15/2013 6:26:30 AM |

I call BS unless you are a complete moron. You said you went into the apartment. Then how did you get a ticket? Unless you were dumb enough to go outside and dumb enough to stay outside. 8/15/2013 9:38:23 AM |

^ That's actually a typical story around the Avent/Gorman area. I've heard a slight variation of this story from several different people. 8/15/2013 9:53:20 AM |

Yup, friends of mine back in undergrad both got tickets because they made the mistake of going to the store to purchase beer and then going to their home. One was 21, the other was 20. The 20 year old never touched the beer, but they both got tickets. Not sure how it played out or if they bothered to challenge the citation, but they were both issued tickets.
People get tickets that get thrown out all the time, but ALE usually targets broke college kids who usually can't afford the time, the money, or both to get out of them.
It's essentially just an income generating government agency like the highway patrol. 8/15/2013 10:10:26 AM |

I got a ticket freshman year from ALE despite 1) being sober, 2) not having consumed any beer (had only recently arrived to the tailgate), 3) not holding any beer, and 4) not having any beer directly around me or within reach simply because a bunch of people at the tailgate had beer. The ALE just makes it up as they go. 8/15/2013 11:15:00 AM |
