So, my PlayStation is shitting the bed. I will be watching something (typically it has been streaming video from my laptop) and the PlayStation fails. It turns off, is unresponsive, and does not indicate anything on the LEDs. If I unplug both HDMI and the power cord, the red led turns back on. It allows me to boot, check my disk for corruption, reboots, and appears normal.
I haven't experienced this behavior when I have played a bluray. I had initially wondered if it was over heating, but the unit didn't feel hot, and managed to play Shawshank redemption two days prior, stream dexter the day prior, and then hasn't been able to stream since.
I suppose I should through a bluray in there today, and see if I can make it fail through other operation.
Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Power supply? (Its a 4 year old ps3 slim)

Ok, this happened with a game too. I loaded it and just let it run.
A bad ground you say? How can I troubleshoot this, and ultimately fix it. 9/1/2013 12:39:53 PM |

And get what, $40? Then I'm out $160 on top of that... Or I can sent it to Sony and have them fix it for $100.
Or is the value of my trade higher than I thought. 9/1/2013 1:44:35 PM |

you'll probly get $100 towards a $200 console that plays ps2 games too http://www.gamestop.com/ps3/consoles/playstation-3-20gb-gamestop-refurbished/64005

So, $100 out of pocket, for an older system.. Also, what it would cost to have Sony repair the unit.
I was hoping for tips on troubleshooting, to determine whether I can buy a replacement part (like a power supply) and take care of this myself.

probly could do all that, but to me that's more expensive if you factor the opportunity cost of my time + the liability of having the repair work or the parts be from good sources 9/1/2013 3:39:19 PM |

For someone who used to take every available opportunity to give me shit for stealing games, that's a pretty scumbag piece of advice to be handing out. At least when I was pirating software, I wasn't removing money from anyone's pocket.9/1/2013 7:57:47 PM |

^^i didn't ask about your opportunity cost, did I? I've already made the determination that if I can fix it for cheaper than $100, I would.
Value of fixing PlayStation for $50 compared to $100 (plus personal satisfaction, and not losing saved data) is higher than the value i recieve from thirty minutes of fucking around looking at cat gifs

^^ gamestop removes more money from the hands of devs than any amount of piracy ever has. those leeches deserve to burn. you're still stealing money from devs by pirating, but you can believe what you want. ^ ps3 modding sites are where i'd start then 9/1/2013 8:40:33 PM |

Sony charges a $150 flat fee to repair a ps3. I had my old one repaired, and it broke during the warranty period so they traded me a new one for my old one. 9/2/2013 9:32:54 AM |
