This is an issue for me this semester that I've never dealt with. All three exams are indeed within 24 hours (6-9 pm one night, 8-11 am and 1-4 pm the next day) and all are cumulative finals so this policy is in effect for me. It's a little early so I haven't filed any paperwork to formally move a test yet, but I went ahead and told the professor of the one class that I was intending to move the final exam date because of the policy. He gave a bit of a menacing reply saying that he advised against moving his exam and that I should try to move one of the other two. The fact of the matter is that the other two are closely related classes and his is not, so it would be to my benefit to leave the other two back-to-back and push his back a day. I've also emailed my adviser but anyone with experience on how to handle this would help too.

Here are my questions:

1.) Are professors allowed to give a different exam under this policy or must they give the student the exact same exam as the student would normally receive if he or she were taking it with the rest of the class?

2.) How far can you move the exam one way or the other and how is the new exam time chosen?

Thank you!

1) I think instructors can give you a different exam if they opt to. I haven't seen anything in the rules and regs. saying they can't.

2) Rescheduling the exam is up to the professor. I haven't seen any specific rules on this either, but I'm willing to bet that any other exam period that you don't have an exam scheduled for, excepting the 24 hour rule, is fair game and can be assigned at the discretion of the instructor. Most instructors will work to find a period that works for both of you.

Since you have to get some forms from Registration & Records and have your schedule verified, that office might be able to give you a better idea of what to expect.

I would imagine if pushing an exam back they definitely should give you another exam so as to prevent you from just asking a classmate what was on it.

According to your user info, you have had 10 years to figure out the policy.

just sack up and take them as they're scheduled. 24 hrs ain't gonna help you after a whole damn semester.

i'd also just take all exams as is b/c you can just get them all the fuck out of the way and move on with your life. if you study correctly and not last minute like a jackass you'll be fine

but i guess you could always just ask to take it earlier rather than after the scheduled time

I had this happen to me three times at NC State, and every time I tried to move an exam I got the bullshit response of move one of the other ones or that it was going to be a big mistake to take a different exam. Twice I took the exam at the normal time, and on one occasion I took the exam on a different date due to multiple other people in the class having the same problem. The final he gave us as a makeup was a lot tougher than his normal exams, even though it was a bullshit history class with a high "A" distribution rating.
