Holy shit...now I know what will fill my Breaking Bad void. Don't want to get too excited...but that looks amazing.

Btw...I am loving these big actors doing TV. Kevin Spacey with House of Cards and now this (I know...there are others...but these seem to be the biggest to me). I hope this keeps up.

"Girls" will be preceded by the premiere of the new Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey drama series "True Detective" on January 12 at 9 p.m. The two stars play "Louisiana detectives Rust Cohle and Martin Hart, whose lives collide and entwine during a 17-year hunt for a killer, ranging from the original investigation of a bizarre murder in 1995 to the reopening of the case in 2012."

I'm not sure these Tease Clips are that compelling, but here's the first one all the same. There are 5 total.

how many of you people will have preconceived opinions based on Andy Greenwald's less than stellar review? come on, be honest.

I'll bet the worst part about this show is the fact that Harrelson and McConaughey are only in for eight episodes.

I like it! Atmosphere is really good.

Also, what is the next HBO show set in Louisiana with the first word of title being "True" ?

me and the g/f weren't overly impressed; we were hoping it would hook us immediately as we've been looking forward to it for awhile now but it didn't. for us it was a bit disjointed and hard to follow at times. with that said though, we aren't giving up on it. we're going to give it a few episodes since some shows need a couple episodes to get things really going.

i liked it. it's definitely a show that could have benefited from back to back episodes though and will likely be a better experience for the binge watcher than week to week.

it was a bit slow at times, but then again, i was pretty tired when i watched it. the pace (among other things) reminds me of the killing.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/01/11/true-detective-review-you-have-to-watch-hbo-s-revolutionary-crime-classic.html

Quote :
"The Lange murder—who's the culprit? how do we nab him?—would be narrative enough for most shows. But True Detective isn't most shows. Only part of the story is set in 1995. The rest takes place 17 years later, as Cohle and Hart separately tell investigators (who've stumbled upon a new, uncannily similar killing) the story of how they cracked the Lange case and why their partnership ended. Hart, now besuited and bald, still works at CID; presumably he's been promoted. Meanwhile, Cohle—graying Deadhead ponytail, menacing Fu Manchu mustache—tends bar and spends his days off drinking "Milwaukee's Best or Lone Star. Nothing snooty." As the interviews unfold, we begin to catch little clues about what happened to Cohle and Hart after 1995—Hart is divorced; Cohle seems to have contributed—and True Detective methodically reveals its actual ambitions. The Lange murder is just a Trojan Horse. The real story here is much richer and stranger: who are these men, and how did this murder change their lives?

Capitalizing on the hackneyed conventions of the CSI genre to investigate character—as opposed to just another creepy murder—is a brilliantly subversive move, and it transforms True Detective into a much finer show than it would seem, at first, to have any right to be. But what makes the series potentially revolutionary, I think, is its format. Like American Horror Story, but unlike pretty much every other program on television these days, True Detective is designed to tell one story per season. When the eighth episode airs on HBO later this winter, the tale of Russ Cohle and Martin Hart will be over; Season Two will track different detectives on a different case. Even more unusual is the fact the all eight episodes were written by a single writer (Louisiana novelist Nic Pizzolatto, who also served as showrunner) and directed by a single director (Cary Fukunaga, who previously helmed 2011's atmospheric Jane Eyre adaptation).

This is a big deal. For more than a decade now, the best TV shows have been routinely surpassing their cinematic equivalents in terms of quality and impact. It's hard to name a movie character who made a stronger impression on viewers recently than Tony Soprano, or a big-screen plot that was more engrossing than Breaking Bad's. "

I felt like I was watching a movie and will have to wait weeks for any type of finality.

That being said, excellent episode and I can't wait for more.

We can all agree that Woody was bangin Kathleen. Cohle will bang Woodys wife and they are setting us up to think Cohle is the killer. Right?

Cohle would be too obvious. They may have caught the original killer before and now there's a copycat, maybe Hart (Harrelson) would be my guess.

I wouldn't be surprised if the killer is just a guy and not some twist where one of the key characters has a "muhaha" moment. I think the show is going to be less of a whodunnit and more of a breakdown of how the life of working homicide shits on your soul over time.

That's the impression I got too. I don't really care too much about who the killer is. I'm more interested in the individual lives of the two main guys.

^exactly. And the fact that a character on a major program espouses* views of a pessimistic slant is pretty unheard of, to me. Add to that the fact that said character is played by Matthew McConaughey and my head explodes. I didn't see the aids movie he did, but heard good things. Thought his performance in the first episode was pretty impressive. Can't wait to see more.

*What he said in the car during the "belief" discussion basically =

All the movies that McConaughey's done in the past few years have been really interesting, and he's great in True Detective, too.

But Woody made the first episode for me. His reactions are the best. And I love Louisiana and sad people so it's awesome.
