Not that Wikipedia is entirely accurate all the time, but the episode synopsis says they meet up for the first time in 10 years.

One small detail I'd like to point out -- I'm really glad that when his wife read his text messages in 2002, it was on a flip phone with a crappy camera and not a smartphone or whatever.

Also, they did a good job on the makeup to make her look old in present day.

I think they were telling us his truck was being stored rather than used since that day that the fight occurred. They said he disappeared during that period and there was no record of what he was doing. Driving a big red pickup truck with plates registered to yourself doesn't work for a person who is trying to disappear. Cohle is extremely calculated and a master of deep cover (aka disguise). He wouldn't be riding around in a truck registered to himself while working deep cover whether he was doing so in an official or unofficial capacity. The writers are implying that he has been doing something, but he wasn't acting under the name of Rust Cohle at the time.

It has been implied that high ranking officials in the department and the government may be involved with the cult activity. Cohle is presented to us as a character who acts very tactfully; revealing only what he wants you to know for reasons that may only be apparent to himself. While I think his act with Marty's wife shows him breaking from that character and acting in an impulsive manner, I don't think it is a coincidence that he showed up to the police station when he did or that the fight played out the way it did. He could have picked up his things at any time and he could have destroyed Marty if he chose to do so. I think it was part of his exit strategy so that he could move on to new activities as a rogue agent or in deep cover.

Is there any chance that his association with that biker gang was not actually undercover work? Like he was actually down with some of those guys?

^^I think part of him coming back to get his stuff was that he knew Marty would be there, he knew Marty would be pissed, and he wanted to let him throw a few punches and own up to it like a man. Yeah he could have probably kicked his ass but he knew Marty would feel better after roughing him up a bit (he probably found out how he dealt with those two guys his daughter was found with).

Also, I'm pretty his look in 2014 (handlebar mustache, long hair with ponytail, etc.) is all part of his cover image to whatever he is looking into.

I didn't quite follow the connection between the religious schools run by Tuttle and murdering/abducting children. Someone on IMDB had claimed he was profiting off of them somehow? Can someone explain?

^^ the abandoned school that rust returned to in 2002 also had a lot of those wooden devil catcher things lying around and was said to be one of tuttle's schools back in 1995

i'm wondering if there's any chance rust may not be part of some kind of deep cover investigation and had just been doing things on his own for those 8 years when he was off the grid. i'm not sure whether there would be legal ramifications to him conducting his own investigation and gathering documents and evidence against people. he could have 8 years worth of shit stored away that he doesn't want the cops to seize and potentially frame him with in addition to destroying all the work he accomplished. it looks like he recruits marty on the next episode. if he was truly part of some kind of official investigation then i can't see him bothering to bring in marty as part of it if he'd been deep undercover for so long.

My prediction: Lawnmower man is the giant (he played Remus on Boardwalk Empire), Rust catches him, Hart finally talks to his daughter and figures out she was sexually traumatized by his father in law, Hart's father in law is the Yellow King.

Clearly the only thing in the storage unit was his truck which is now gone. Any investigation documents he has won't be in that unit. He's too smart.

Why would he be so defensive about the cops searching his storage unit if his truck was the only thing in there? He'd just be like "Sure. Take a look. Have fun." knowing that there wasn't anything in there to incriminate him.

Control. He knew they don't have evidence to get a warrant. He has nothing to gain for showing them the storage unit. If they don't find anything they'll just focus their efforts on the next aspect of his life that they want to investigate. He might as well let them focus their efforts on a storage unit that has nothing to show rather than having them start digging elsewhere.

If they offer him something he wants/needs (a piece of knowledge from their current investigation maybe?) he would probably let them in. Why would you expect a calculated person such as Cohle to give something away for free? They're not going to see an empty unit and decide he's innocent.

Yeah man, I wasn't sure if it was the storage unit or not but he has some files somewhere and was showing it to Marty.

Upon further review it is definitely the storage unit. You can find all the previews on youtube pretty soon after the previous show aired... unless you have some reservation about not seeing what half the True Detective watching populace has already seen.

HBOGo also posts the previews. I just don't usually take the time to watch them. The only one of true detective I watched was after episode 4.

Some people avoid previews altogether if they're planning to watch no matter what because a lot of shows tend to spoil their own story lines. Sometimes, the "next week on..." spoils the cliffhanger that literally just aired.

That's just an fyi. It never hurts to put a [spoiler] tag in front of something that hasn't actually aired in a complete episode yet.

Another amazing episode

I think Marty's ex wife is in on the cult and has leveraged Marty's infidelity at least once and almost twice to derail the investigation.

I don't think it's him. The scarring is not obvious enough. It's not a trademark feature you can't help but notice. It's there, but from the way it's been described by the characters that have seen it, the fat guy isn't scarface or whoever.

yeah, i thought it was pretty clear he's the man with scars. in all the interviews i've read with the writer/creator he's basically saying he's not trying to fool anyone and it's a pretty straightforward story.
