Since there is no way to transcode .mkv to Xbox One I am looking at converting .mkv. I've found multiple free ways to do this, however I'm not sure how to automate it.

I'd like for files to be converted as soon as they are saved into a folder, how can I set this up?

Mac or Windows?

I had this setup on my iMac a couple of years ago with Handbrake. There was a thread on macrumors.com that walked you through it all.

Windows 8

this is beyond what I know about. Can a Schedule Task be set to run when something is saved in a specific directory?

Cinavia doesn't care what formats it in on PS3/4. It'll block. You need a realm streaming system.

That's not going to help me out with Xbox one, you can't transcode anything to Xbox one.

does anyone have a solution to the question I am asking, not how to solve this for Xbox 360 or PS3?

You'll need something like Belvedere to do this. I do something similar with Hazel and Handbrake on Mac.

Set up a rule to watch a folder that runs Handbrake on any MKVs that get dropped in that folder, then trashes the mkv. It'll take a couple of tries to get it right, but once you do, you'll be able to set it and forget it.

Awesome, thanks! I found some good setup guides for Belvedere to start with with.

once i started searching for Belvedere I found a few other options, another one is DropFolders:

(i have no idea why i didn't find that lifehacker post when searching for automatic video conversion)

I can't figure out how to get Belvedere to start handbrake automatically, but I got it working in conjunction with DropFolders

when a .mkv is saved into Downloads, Belvedere launches DropFolders then moved the file to \Downloads\watch. DropFolder converts the the file to Downloads\destination and then Belvedere moves the file to my NAS device.

seems to be working so far although HandBrake is pretty slow

[Edited on November 29, 2013 at 3:01 PM. Reason : i just realized the test file i gave it was 2GB, not the typical 600-700mb. explains the slowness. ]

It's still working great.

For some reason though I can not create a 3rd rule in my /Downloads folder for Belvedere; I want to add a rule that any .mp4, .avi or .mov is immediately moved to the NAS device but every time I create the rule it doesn't save.
